I remember having this conversation with people years ago. Just because someone makes a lot of appearances doesn't mean they're a main character. Cage most definitely is a major supporting character but he's hardly the Liu Kang or Raiden of the story. His role is to be funny and support Liu Kang, outside of the unfinished MKA bios Johnny's biggest role in the story was the first MK movie.
Jade is a major supporting characters as well. The Kung Lao to Kitana's Liu Kang in a way. She doesn't have a major roll in the games except for maybe MKD. Both are popular characters but the story can and has continued without both of them.
You guys need to get it around your head that just because a character doesn't have a rabid insane fanbase that the fanbase is small. Jade fans are obviously just chill and don't stress the small stuff.
Johnny is as he's always been. A sidekick that's funny in a corny way.
Jade is as she's always been. Solemn and serious.
You guys need to work on not being so damn mad all the time.
Also I think you guys are forgetting that people are usually fans of Kitana/Mileena/Jade together. When it comes to pitting one against each other sides are taken but for the most part I'd say that Kitana/Mileena/Jade fans outnumber Cage fans. So of course Jade's numbers would be big.

Great post, oracle.
Cage is an awesome character, but he's still a support character. Yes, he has his own plotline of trying to scam on Sonya in MK2011 (which you could barely call a plotline since it's really just a few lines at the very beginning) , but honestly, go back before MKA... His plotlines were horrendous. He basically had the same ending in MK1, MK2, and a comedic variation on it in MK4, he was dead as of MK3 and then he magically reappeared in MK4.
Again, great character, but people act like he's the origin of the series (yes, the MK team wanted to make a Van Damme fighting game and it fell through, which is why Cage was created, but Cage has NEVER been the focal point of the story).
Still, comic relief is important, so I like Cage. But for Jade, I've always dug her divided loyalty between her friend Kitana and her Emperor Shao Khan. They've always played that well.
I think that both characters could stand to evolve story-wise, and I think that they're both on even footing in that regard.

Kitana though. She's essentially the Sub-Zero in that equation. Really I'm just continually shocked that people are shocked that Jade is popular.@oracle Because both characters have connections with Sub-Zero I'd wager everyone related to him are popular.

Great synopsis, J-R. Jade is an awesome character, and what you describe shows that Jade has just as much, if not more depth of story than Cage.
I still see Jade as a support character in that she's Kitana's bodyguard and her story tends to revolve around Kitana in a sense, and I'd like to see that change in the future, or at the very least, I'd like to see NRS give her more of her own personal story/plotline. But I still think that NRS has done a great job with Jade, practically since her begining in MK2.
Cage on the other hand...

Jade is indeed a support character, like it was mentinoned earlier, she is like the Kung Lao to Kitana's Liu Kang. And I think she works perfectly like that. Not all characters have to be solo stars or main characters, especially not in such a big elaborate world as Mortal Kombat is with so many characters involved in the story.
I have often thought how Jade might be should she be on her own. We kinda had a little taste of how she is in MKD, but she was still supporting someone, this time Sindel, and her story still revolved around Kitana who had been mind-controlled by Onaga.
I did like Cage in this game though, but I never cared for him in any of the past games. He was just there, with no real significance to anything story-related. Not once has he done anything important or significant to the story. He just fought at random, mostly.

I never said that she was just a woman with a pole. Another user stated that he voted for because of her pole.
As, of Jade being loyal I understand that. But every support character has there own agenda as well.
In example Noob working with have Havok to cause chaos.
Kung Lao trying to show he can be as good as Liu as demonstrated in MK9.
Smoke can build off of his demon enera form what ever it is called.
Characters have to progress they can't stay the same forever.
Jade, needs to maintain loyalty but also needs to have her own motives.
Scorpion doesn't even change hence why he lost. He needs to escape the Quan Chi scheme. I'd like to see him build off the way they had him in mkd
Have him become the champion of mortal kombat.
Loyalty is an amazing trait but there has to be more than that. She has to move towards what she wants keeping her friendship in line. I've never seen jades motives ever.

You're right, I misread what you wrote and I apologize for that.
However, you also wrote that Jade's role is to be Kitana's slave which is also false. I do agree that Jade would become more interesting with having her own agenda. That would give her something that makes her step out of being JUST a support character.
I would NEVER want Scorpion to be the champion of MK though. Scorpion is strong, but he is definately not the strongest of characters and doesn't deserve to be the champion. Alot of other interesting things can be done with his character to make him a generally more interesting and less repetative character.

This post just made me think of something interesting. Jade is probably one of the few people in MK who has her shit together. Loyalty is an amazing trait but there has to be more than that. She has to move towards what she wants keeping her friendship in line. I've never seen jades motives ever.
She's not possessed by a demon, trying to get revenge for her clan, trying to usurp someone's position or turn on a comrade of her own gain.
She's like the only sane man of MK lol.

I don't care about tropes. Only facts. And fact is that Jade is a woman, therefore your it would be correct to say woman and not man.
Man is also a term used to define humankind as an overall race, so if she was a human, your statement would be correct, however, she is not. She's Edenian. So not even in that sense would it be right.
So I must say that the trope you lean against to defend your statement doesn't prove that it is correct.
Also, wouldn't it be "TV Tropes are never wrong" and not "is never wrong", since the word "Tropes" is plural?

Jesus Jade fans! Get it together! 50/50 it's close! I'm satisfied cause I saw her beat Mileena, but if she could beat Johnny Cage that would be the icing on the cake! Favorite kombatant!

Jade gets my vote!
Love her torn loyalties but ultimately choosing her friend (to her demise) storyline. Her look in MK9 is near flawless and her gameplay is fantastic.
I do like Johnny, great specials and fatalities but his story has gotten stale for me.
I have to admit though I was suprised when Jade took Mileena in the earlier rounds

I was surprised when Jade beat Mileena as well. With all of the 'Mileena promotions' (if that's even the correct term) that have come out with MK9, I suspected there'd be a bigger Mileena fanbase! Happy Jade won though.
I voted for Jade too, but it was a really hard choice for me. I like both characters- Johnny kept me laughing through story mode, which was a nice touch that kept the game from being just 'yep everyone's fighting each other to the death' and being kind of... tragic, honestly.
But I agree with you about what you said about Jade. She's an awesome character, great backstory and storyline, and definitely one of my favorites! Hoping that Jade makes it through, but it could really go either way at this point and I'd be okay with it.

what a shame, Jade winning over Cage.
A palette swap character with zero personality, winning over Cage.
I smell some 4chan user cheat on the poll.

Probably about a quarter (okay maybe less) of the characters are palette swaps. I don't understand the point you're making there. Jade has evolved to be completely her own- and she definitely has a personality! I think Cage's personality is more defined then hers, though.

I can say the same about Cage being a funny douche and always dying,so I don't see point in your argument.
