Whoever said that this match-up system is like the playoffs couldn't be anymore right. The weaker seeds always go against higher up seeds, that's how you weed out the weak from the strong. But this is just a popularity contest so it doesn't really matter.
That aside, I think every character has a chance to be great. If MK9 could make people change their minds' about Stryker, I think every MK character could be awesome. I think even Meat and Mokap could be cool.

It would be kewl if the winning popular character is guaranteed a spot on MK10's roster, and written into the story regardless if they're dead/zombie/locked-up or not.

Darrius. He was a favourite of mine in Deception and Armageddon and like many characters from that era, I wish he was more popular than he is. I really hope he returns but that probably won't happen anytime soon.
Never really been a Kitana fan.

No just no! Almost all characters from that period are horrible. There is not even much to criticize about characters like Darrius because they are so dull and bland.

To be honest though, Kitana's pretty bland herself. She's got blue going for her, I'll give her that. She's blue.... Aside from the cool weapon, they really haven't been doing Kitana right after the 2d games... There's always something off about her... Not in the charmingly "Oh, turns out she's not beautiful, but icky" kind of way like her sister, and without the mysterious exotic biracial butterfly weapon-master qualities of Jade.... Kitana's just the series' standard boring blue princess.
I definitely wouldn't call Darrius bland. I liked him in Deception (not so much in MKA). I didn't dig some of his specials, but his fighting styles in Deception were good and he could combo well. I know a lot of folks didn't like the whole recycled styles thing.. but really, is there only one person in the world that knows Karate? Or TKD? Or Savate? No, there are many people who practice all of the different martial arts styles. When It came to copying, the only issue I had was with recycled special moves. Moves that ware supposed to be a signature move of that fighter. Everyone should have had unique specials.
I thought his story was interesting enough and I liked his look. The only thing lacking for me about Darrius was his weapon. I didn't like the gauntlets ... but if they were gonna use them, I thought they could've done a bit better in execution. However, they did work well into combos, so I didn't let it bug me that much.
I just like Kitana more, especially in the new game, that's why I voted for her.
The characters introduced in that era of Mortal Kombat were not bland... they were just not handled very well. All of them had such great potential, but were forgotten after their initial debuts. Their stories had some interesting points that could have been expanded upon.
Kira is a great example. Her look was excellent, her story was off to a great start and could have been awesome if expanded... her downfall was that they made her a straight up clone. If she'd had her own set of unique special moves and wasn't a copy cat character, I bet Kira could have been a fave.
In different ways, the same could be said for all of those introduced in that era. I'd be willing to give them all a second chance and love to see them back if they get the attention they deserve to set them apart. It's not their fault that the MK team introduced them and then did absolutely nothing with them. They all had potential to be great.

When Blaze was freed from enslavement at the hands of the Dragon King's priests, the sequence of Armageddon was begun! It was to be the sons of his creator that would end this threat, but the prize of victory was viewed with envious eyes by an unforseen challenger! Rain is the direct descendent of Argus, an Edenian traitor who believes power is his birthright. Is his victory in the tournament presumed, or is Round 1 merely another distraction for the elemental harbinger?

Rain storyline is consistently getting better with each game he is in and the RAGE that happened when he wasn't included in the main roster proves how big of a fanbase he has.
