Not really. Just like in sports playoffs, lower seeds get matched up against higher seeds. That's the only fair way to do it. Less popular characters shouldn't get an advantage just because their fanbase is smaller. This is a popularity contest more than anything else. People are going to pick who they like. There will also be people who pick out of spite.

Had those characters been put into more fair match ups, I'm sure at least half of them would have made it through, because while they suck to many, they still have a fanbase.

However, you get the point. Not everyone can win. People are going to get cut. It would also be unfair to get rid of the most popular characters by placing them all against one another in the first round.
I mean I'm sorry but if the ending somehow got down to Dairou and Darrius or something that wouldn't be interesting. That's why I say they had to place some of the more unpopular characters against the popular characters to get rid of some of the more unpopular ones. That way they can get to the meat of the competition.

Yea, but have you guys not noticed that some really popular fights are going to come up in the second round.
Kitana vs Rain
Scorpion vs Noob Saibot
Raiden vs Fujin
Sonya vs Kano.
I'm telling you guys the first round is really just to weed out the scrubs. That's how I would have set it up too.

Exactly! Like I said I like some of the less popular characters.
One of mine is about to bite the dust. I voted Li Mei, but I know it ain't gonna matter. She's probably my second favorite female behind jade. However, Quan Chi is unfortunately going to roll over her. That's the game though. It's a popularity contest and Quan Chi is more popular so it's okay if Li Mei bites the dust. At the end of the day there will only be one standing anyway.
One I do want to win is Mavado, but I know that since he's up against Kabal then he's going to lose hands down. A lot of people absoultely love Kabal. I guess I just never got the hype with him. Maybe they will bring Mavado back in MK10 and up his game.

i was really rooting for dairou. i loved his design. he was my fav new char in mkdeception.
but, all i have to say is mk mythologies sareena ownz all other females.
as for li mei vs quan. i liked li mei in mkda. after that her appeal quickly faded for me. quan chi on the other hand has always been interesting to me. not to mention that he is responsible for the biggest and most famous story plot in mk: the scorpion/sub saga.i vote quan chi.

A sports match up is not a popularity contest.
And in this sense, the characters in the match up should share common attributes, or have a known quarrel, like Shang Tsung vs Quan Chi, Tanya vs Rain, or Havik vs Hotaru. Every character deserves a fair shot.

People seem to be very "lol, I'm mainstream and vote for popular characters, so boohoo to the underdogs". It's a damn shame that there are so many who willingly ignores the unfairness, just because their favourites are getting the upperhand. Well, that's sportsmanship for you right there.

I know and I don't understand the pissyness either. Look at it this way. Either reptile or Ermac won't make it to the second round. Yet Ashrah or Nitara will. Also one of either Jax or Tremor will too. There are matchups here that are fair. I think the brackets are actually pretty even.
I mean what did they want Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the first around. Heck let's just do them in the first round, then Raiden and Fujin, along with Mileena and Kitana all in the First round. That way we make sure none of the popular ones make it to the end. Hell one way or the other a popular one would end up at the end. There's no stopping it. The unpopular characters will get eliminated.
Personally I'm waiting for Noob Saibot and Scorpion to go up againt one another that will be a good matchup. I also wonder if Quan Chi and Sub-Zero will come up against one another. If So I'm voting Sub-Zero to eliminate that troll Quan Chi, and Noob Saibot all the way against Scorpion. I love Noob Saibot, I think he's the best bad guy Mk has, that says a lot for where the character started at too. He used to have nothing and now he's one of the best bad guys. Let's go NOOB.

I do care about the underdogs though, I just know they won't make it to the end. Like I said Li Mei, Mavado, Sareena are all some of my favorites. I know they won't win it all though. I love Jade too, I want her to make it to finals unless she comes up against Sub-Zero.lol. Jade's my second favorite character of MK. I want her to go far in this competition.

As much as I really dislike Quan Chi.... (especially in MK9) he gets my vote. Li Mei never interested me as a character... i find her really bland.

Li Mei vs Quan Chi
Li Mei has always been an Ehhh character for me.
Her Moves- ok I guess. But those flying punches are awesome.
Her Story-Not bad. You gotta give her props on winning the deadly alliance tournament.
Quan Chi is evil and manipulative. Pretty badass also.He might be my favorite bad guy.
His moves-AWESOME. Ive liked his moves since MK4. His tele-stomp is badass.
His story- I love it. I think besides Shao Kahn, Quan Chi is the main villian. I mean hes behind the events like half the time.
Winner=Quan Chi

The rightful heir to the lost realm of Edenia; Princess Kitana turned against her adopted father, Shao Kahn, to end his conquest of realms. Considered a terrorist by some, a patriot by others; Darrius is the leader of a subversive resistance against Seido's order-obsessed rulers. In this battle of Round 1 rebels, only one cause can triumph against overwhelming odds!

Well this matchup isn't really fair, but then again the others weren't either.
So my vote goes to KITANA because...well...its Darrius, need I say more?

Is this even a question? ... I don't even like Kitana, but Darrius?
Though I do like that they managed to make a comparison between the two characters heh... For Meat and Mileena, instead of talking about the actual thing they have in common, I just keep thinking about how she'd probably just eat him. He looks downright delicious.
