Oh, the trash talk would amuse me, that I wouldn't let get to me.
What intimidates me is the skill level of some of you people... I watch gameplay vids on youtube, or I just listen to you guys talk about techniques and such, and I can tell you guys have this down to a science...
Your moves flow, and you plan them multiple steps in advance... You'll see me tendencies, and break down whatever strategy I can come up with, and then humiliate me...
Now that's the part that worries me, thats what I would probably more or less enjoy since I've never been happy with losing, especially not royally.
I've been reading a lot of whats said in this thread, and have started reading Versatiles stratedgy... Even though some of it sinks in, it's easier to understand then it is to put in practice. I'm almost to the point of trying special hand excercises to improve my manual dexterity, and try to focus my brain hand coordination.
EDIT: Also, the competion I have now is weak, it's just random aquaintances from my college residence, oftentimes who have never played the game, or haven't played it in a while... Since most mainstream players of the game forgot about it not to long after they got it.

I'll be honest with you. You are correct in saying that some players will be at a skill level that is beyond your own. Everyone here has some form of trouble beating a particular person online. There are also other players who either are equal to or less than you in terms of ability. What's great about playing against players that are better than you is that you will begin to pick on their advanced techniques and eventually use them against those players. You see, playing against your buddies is ok, but it sucks when your comp is weak and when they are not availble to play with.
How can you ever truely enjoy the spirit of competition with weak opponents? There is something to be said when you have advanced your skill enough in the game in order to match and beat those that were once your superior. Online for the PS2 is free, but it's unregulated which means that you will run into the ocasional cheaters. Xbox Live is a centralized service with a ton of extras included in the package such as downloadable content, friends lists, etc. Xbox Live is regulated which prevents cheat devices from working during online play. If you don't want to spend the money on Xbox Live, go with PS2.
Either way, you will be rewarded with the ability to play against anyone at anytime. The game will never get boring because fighting games by nature allow for new strategies and techniques to be developed all the time. The reason being is because of the many different players who play the game competitively are constantly trying to find new ways to beat each other. Besides, you can't play mind games with the CPU, there is no satisfaction in that at all. I hope you change your mind about online play. We would love to see you there!
Peace

honestly from my experiance with sf2 online and fighting game tournaments in my area (we play soul calibur 2 and smash) isnt as intimidating as u may think. As long as you know the mechanics and every move in your arsenal the rest of the game is just confidence. If u go into a match with very high confidence u WILL utilize all the techniques u know and will come close or defeat your opponent. Just know the techniques and always try to find new ways in tricking your opponent. Also after tons of matchs u learn what moves work for you and what moves dont. For example u may be using some type of medium kick but everytime u use it against a person when they are blocking u always seems to get punished afterwards. You will pick up on that and not use that kick when u think your opponent is going to block, instead u might find out that the kick is really useful when your opponent trys to attack u because its a really fast attack(counter hit). Stuff like that is just from experiance and everyone is starting this game not knowing anything so youll be learning like the rest of us (people who are fighting experts will most likely pick up on things faster but u will learn). Also im sure there are plenty of guides out there to help u learn some basic techniques and strategys. well thats all i gotta say i hope this helps later

I'll give you my 2 c
I started playing UMK3 online a few weeks ago.
I was certin my Kabal, Stryker, Sheeva and Sindel are something that the UMK3 world has never seen.
Boy did I get my ass kicked.....
But as weeks passed I begun getting better and better.
It's all about experience, MKD is not complex, if you play some time you will start doing things like punishing, juggles, quick recovery without even thinking about it
Ther is no guide that will tell you what to do in X time.
You just have to play it, MKD is very simple, you can learn it very quickly.
Versatile's guide is more of an advance guide perheps you should learn the baisics like high/ mid/ low and then move on to things like that.

Simple rule of competitive anything, you don't get good until you've played better opponents.
You can't let yourself get to caught up in win/loss records, or the way someone talks because you never know if thats somebody on the way up or down. And the beauty of online (or any large competitive circle) is that odds are if you need a pick me up, you can find someone to beat, someone like you who just wants to get better.
MKDe is a bad example because its almost completely broken online, there's just too much shit in there that can't be overcome regardless of skill. You can't learn anything from a loss against Dairou except don't fight dairou anymore.
Hopefully we can say better of MKA online, and even if its got some broke shit (all fighters do), there'll prolly still be a bunch of us hashing it out on the regular if you need some comp.

I'm sure this has been posted a while ago, but...
I was just watching the IGN video Cyrax vs Night wolf in the Meet the cast video. I noticed that Xyrax can knock his bombs towards his opponent with a low attack.
Thought that was pretty clever.

Wow... Thanks for all the great advice guys, it does make sense...Up my competition, and my skills will follow.
I'm really interested in getting online, I always thought that there was some sort of fees for playing ps2 online.
Guess I should find that configuration disk, and figure out how to get connected!

I dunno man, that parry sure looks like it came off hella late. I hope they didn't loosen the timing up since E3 to make it easier.

Actually, not really that much. That flew over most players heads but not mine and apparently not yours either. At first I remember making a thread about that thinking he possibly had tracking bombs this time which would make him higher tier no doubt, then I watched it again and one more time and noticed he actually pokes the bombs towards you which is cool.
But yeah I saw that, that looks cool actually.I just hope Cyrax gets his Net back for sure.

Can someone pls tell me who exactly has the "Xing Yi" fighting style? I can't find it on the list of characters and their fighting styles or, did Boon decide to eliminate it?

It's most likely that Kano will have Xing Yi Quan.

I thought he hit it but thought nahh, it probably tracked but when I saw it initially it did look like he poked it.
He can poke it or kick it apparently, that's good I just hope he gets back his net.

Umm ok just wanted to point some things out to topic creator. First, Cyrax, Daegon, Jarek, Johnny Cage, and Shinnok are spelt wrong. no I'm not bashing you, just letting you know. Second, if you want ABC order, Hsu Hao has to go before Jade and after Hotaru. Third, How come you don't mention Blaze, Goro, Kai, Kano, Kintaro, Motaro, Onaga, Reiko, or Tanya? Is it cuz we don't have much info on them if at all?
Isn't there a vid on IGN showing every character in the game in action? Did none of the shots have 1 or 2 styles shown for these missing people. There might be more not on the list, but thats what i noticed, missed spellings and imissions.

Hmmmm ok, just wanted to point some things
Fisrt,
You're an ass. I write a 400 pages post to help all the people here and all you do is pointing out the few mistakes I made?
there's like 500 characters in MKA, Oh fuck no, I spelld Cyrex and not Cyrax, did the world stop spinning?
In the 2nd grade I learned the ABC song so thx,I know. With the number of characters some will get mixed. You can live with it.
Blaze Motaro and Onaga are new.
Goro, Kintaro, Kai, Reiko, Tanya will be added.
WOW. This are the posts that gets me angry............................
Tanya and Kano
Tanya
Tanya has Yue Chuan and her MKD weapon.
Yue Chuan is a good style,
d+4 and d+1 are some of the best lows in the game.
3,2 starts with a mid and gives 50/50 on hit.
On block, 3,2 in Yue Chuan can be back dash canceld to make it safe against some characters but many can punish her like Kabal's spin, Teleslam, Scorp's f+1 and more.
Her weapon is ok,
d+4 is a good low,
u+4 sidesteps, pops up, hits mid and safe (it sounds better then it actually is, it's a very slow move and can be seen from miles)
1,1 are mids that gives 50/50 but unsafe. b+1 is a mid pop but also unsafe.
Special moves:
Drill Kick (f,f+3) The drill kick is a unique move gameplay wise.
It's fast, hits mid, juggles (I'll explain more later) and in MKD you got a free throw.
On block tanya spins and the opponent can juggle her for twice the damage!
If Jade blocks a drill kick and punishes, ouch......
Juggling from a drill kick is tricky.
If you start the drill kick from a long distance and it connects the opponents floats near you and its easy.
If you start the drill kick close your opponent, for some weird reason he will float far from you so you cant juggle him.
Overall, Drill Kick can still be used in cases like - Sidestep a long recovery projectile and punish your open wide opponent, for example, side step Sub's Freeze and punish with a drill kick.
Other then that, with the very weird juggle properties and the HUGE damage you can get from a blocked Drill Kick makes this move not so usefull.......
d,b+4 is also somewhat a weird move.
It's really fast, hits mid, and does 15%, the problem is that's it's unsafe.
The range is also not very good.
There's just not enough reward to use this, anytime this will hit, b+1 in weapon and 3,2 in Yue Chuan will hit as well.
d,b+2 is an ok projectile, kinda slow
d,u+2 Can be seen and blocked, not very usefull.
u,d+1 (invisible) is great, invisible with Yue Chuan mix ups and drill kick is just great can make your opponent get crazy.
Throw, Tanya's throw in MKD was unbreakable 16% which is good, when not against a wall it pushed your opponent very far. On wall you could do some crazy combos which were not meant to be in the game. Midway will probably fix it.
So to sum Tanya up, she has some of the best lows in the game, her throw in MKD was nice, alll she need is just 1 safe mid, with that she can easily be mid tier, without it, low-mid tier.
Kano
We dont know much about Kano,
He has Xing Yi and his Knifes
Xing Yi is ok at best,
d+4 is a nice low, u+4 is a tracking pop up (moves with up will track),
4 is a nice mid and 4,2 is good mid pop up.
There's really nothing special about this style.................
Kira's Knifes (assuming Kano will get her version) are also ok at best,
d+3 is a nice low, 1 is nice to throw here and there.
This style just has no mid pop up, no fast pokes, you cant do anything with it.
In DA Kano was weak,
Unless he gets some new specials and/ or an update to his styles he will be low tier again.

Don't you have anything better to do than to point out mistakes? I mean I could go on about how you didn't put a capital "N" when starting a new sentence, or how you said "missed spellings" instead of misspellings, or even how you said "imissions" instead of "emissions", but I won't because I don't feel the need to point out every error you made. However, something I will point out is you only made a post of two paragraphs, not fifty, and still made many errors .
OK big updates with the new vids, I'll try to cover most of the new stuff.
Smoke - the dude has some new stuff......
The new cloud move, I can't explain it....... it's really weird and it might be broken, it's probably blockable I guess....... I don't know it's looks kinda broken to me.
His new teleport is a nice adition.
Sareena -
I'll say it again, damm her projectile is so fucking fast, too fast, you can actually juggle with it.
It's too good right now, looks like you can just spam it non stop.
Sareena looks really good.
I dont know what move she used in her sword, maybe it's 2 but it so fast, it's crazy...........
Kai -
His styles are crap, his special moves looks ok.
That juggeling charging kick looks ok, His juggle projectile is a bit weird, maybe it will hit people who throw projectiles non stop......
Rain -
I still think is thunder is too good
Sub -
Wow so you can do the clone any time, in the air and stuff, it's a great addition.
You can't do it from up close.
His Ice Pillar looks fairly balanced...........
Drhamin -
He has combos, I always thought he was very unique and cool without combos, anyway............
So his projectile is normal and doesn't stun you so no more pwoered up projectile, slam crap.
Dairou -
Ok so the telepot is still overpowered, the projectile is still good and TS is slower! it's like the GC version, they fixed it, yay, I'm happy.
Liu Kang -
d,f+3 does 8% mow..............
Quan Chi -
Escrima is not that slow anymore.
Parry, ok we can all calm down, the animation of the parry stays there but it doesn't parry the moves and you can punish.
So,
TS is fixed, Parry looks very good. Good news.............
Smoke - the dude has some new stuff......

Dairou:
TS Drop is slower. There is that obvious "lean-back" animation that allows Dairou's opponent to jump the TS Drop on reaction. It looks like that at least.
Teleport still looks like MK:D's.So,free TS Drop after it in MK:A?I noticed the Dairou player tried to TS Drop after the connected Teleport, but all he got was d+1.Maybe they fixed it.Maybe not.
The fireball does look the same.
Other things I saw was a juggling dial-a-combo from 3 pokes (probably 1,1,1,CS?).

Not in two player mode. It's slower in the GC version, a lot.Against the arcade, yes it still has the same speed faster.
BTW, Smoke looks WAY too powerful with the throwing smokey cloud along with the regular one?
My opinion.
I want to see more Cyrax in action..
Sektor looks better then I thought actually.
smokes new cloud move is just like subbys ice move kinda. you can see it coming he wiggles his arms it smokes up behind him then it hits you. its a regular fireball but freezes. that sliding telemove
wtf was that.
hopefully soon we get the rest of the characters.
i wanns see sindel in action, see if they added stuff to Zha chaun. also see if they gave her a new move.
and damnit i want more footage of deagon!!
Sareena fireball is hott!!
Reikos Ying still dishes out crap damage
still he looks decent, cant wait to use him.
hopefully kais version on moi gets some mids, thats what it was lacking in MKD.
dairou looks to be decent still. that slam still comes out pretty fast, only thing that really needed to be fixed about it was all the buffering
