I vote Liu Kang 3 times if i could
Hotaru ...whos that
unfortunately this "champion poll" is not based who who can actually kick whos ass which i thought would make this poll stand out but rather a typical popularity poll...full of bias voters but whatever...i vote liu kang; homie's beat all major villains who were worth a damn and continued in the alt timeline till raiden fucked shit up. no doubt he will be one of the heroes who makes a return.
in the world of MK, whos "cooler" and "more interesting" hardly matter when the world is at stake. Its who can stop the catastrophe and save earth or wherever and defeat the BIG BOSS, and Liu Kang has shown to beable to on more than one occasion ...though not without help from his allies. in My opinion, He IS the True Supreme Champion and NRS(the only MK folks who matter) seems to agree.
and with that, im out.

Hotaru's cool. He's one of the only new characters I actually like.
But come on, Liu is the man. He's a god damn icon. And he actually showed a little personality for once in MK9, so the old "vanilla" accusations don't really hold up anymore.
Voting for Turkey Boy.

i do like the look of hotaru but think his moves are really crappy.

I voted for Hotaru. He was one of a few that made me somewhat appreciate Deception a bit. His moves were awesome, his look was really cool, overall I thought he was one of the better newer characters.
For Liu, however, I'm sick of this character. Granted that he's the champion, what they did to him, year after year, was getting on my nerves. I don't ever want to see zombie Liu Kang return ever.

Hotaru.
While Liu Kang was protagonist of the classic part of the series and MK4, he was mostly bland "designated hero" without much development. Oddly, after his own death, Liu Kang become more of a interesting character rather than "image of the character". MKSM made him look like a fool, but MK9 finally made him right. However, given his previous portaryals and the end of the storyline, I am not expecting him to appear in the next game or to be very improtant. I am not against him, but I am not his fan either.
Hotaru, on the other hand, was one of the best newcomers in MKD, alongside with Havik. His zealousness make him an interesting character who is neither good nor evil in traditional sense. He could be considered immoral, however even that would be wrong, since Hotaru operates on his own sense of morality (defined by laws of Orderrealm). This, oddly enough, make him quite similar to Havik, which makes their dynamic even more interesting. While he haven't done much in the story, purely as a character he is much more interesting than Liu Kang ever was (except for MK9, but we see how it will play out in the future).

Liu Kang of course.
Liu Kang is the generic "Do no wrong" hero. Or was. MK9 really made me appreciate Liu Kang. The way he thought Raiden was delusional was perfect.
Hotaru is blah. A guy so high on order he decides to ally with an evil dragon king. Good Job Hotaru...

Hotaru.
Sorry Liu, I just never have found you too interesting. There are others who I feel deserve your spot more, Kung Lao, Kai, Kenshi I think all could do exactly what you have been doing forever, but better.
So, I'm voting for Hotaru. I'm going to use that word again....Potential.lol. I think that Seido was weak when it was introduced, so it needed a character to help define it and Hotaru filled that role perfectly. The thing is I get Hotaru sided with evil, but who's to say that he's really evil? I mean he's just really following what he's been taught all of his life. I would say he's more misguided than anything. He's a very interesting character if you ask me.

Yeah, Hotaru is pretty awesome. Especially his alt, he looks like a tank in that thing. I hope that's his Primary if he gets brought back.

I've never really seen how people say Liu Kang is "Boring" compared to other characters in MK. Especially characters like Reptile, Baraka and such who's story is mainly "must...serve... bad guy..." in every game. Liu Kang has some tragedy and drama in his story. Also, let's not forget that Liu Kang hasn't really been the hero since MK4. After that he's died, came back to life, and got one good cutscene in Armageddon and nothing much else. It's not like he was the main hero in all eight games, and even in the first four, he wasn't really in the spotlight like Ryu is in street fighter; Scorpion and Sub-Zero are more "in the spotlight." than Liu Kang or anyone else for that matter. He was a very subtle hero, and I like him for that.
I can't say as much about Hotaru since he pretty much got scrapped after Deception. He looks kind of cool, which is a plus. But what I can't stand is his actual character. You miss your curfew and he throws you in jail until you're an old man... what the hell? And then when you finally bust out and get ready to fight him he goes "I was going to defend you in the court" Really, Hotaru? Really? Maybe Hotaru can become cool if he was revamped a bit, but for now he's one of my least favorite characters. And when you tell me to choose between my favorite character and my least favorite character, it's pretty safe to assume that I'll vote for my favorite.
Do I expect Liu Kang to get far in this competition? No, I'm pretty sure at least 1/4 of this community would hate him enough to vote for anyone who runs against him, and a good half of them who are indifferent. But it looks he'll at least win this round, rightfully so.

QFT. Hotaru's a character I'd definitely like to make another appearance, but MK9 gave Liu the brain and personality we always needed him to have. Gone are the days of "Yay, I win again" and, god forbid, asking a recently deceased monk if he was okay after being Baraka'd through the skull. Liu gets this vote.
Did I mention he was a blast to play? Gotta love how they reworked his cartwheel into his X-ray.
Of all the new characters to come after MK4, Hotaru has been my favorite. He has an awesome design (especially his alternate where he wore the helmet) and genuinely interesting motivation. I think he has a ton of potential to be the neutral badass character that Scorpion never really lived up to. He had an awesome special move set as well and although his projectile may not have been the best game play wise it certainly looked cool and is the only MK projectile i can think of that looks really powerful, if that makes sense?
Anyway yeah, Hotaru 2012.

The rivalry between the Shokan and Centaur races is legendary, a motivating factor in their uneasy co-existence as part of Shao Kahn's army! As winner of nine Mortal Kombat tournaments against Earthrealm, Prince Goro is a celebrated champion, but Motaro's race of Centaur warriors remain the favoured choice of the Emperor. Round 1 hosts a super-heavyweight showdown in the first battle of the bosses!
