Many of the "less popular" characters have strong fanbases, but were matched against characters they obviously couldn't win against in a vote.
It's like matching Usher, a successful and very popular artist, against Michael Jackson, a music icon with success and popularity lasting beyond his death. It's unfair; the icon would obviously win.
These one-sided matches also manifest a long lasting flaw in the MK series; with in each game, too many characters are created, with only a few receiving initial recognition. Other characters are either dragged along, eventually gaining some kind of credibility, or are cast out completely. Deception and Armageddon are to perfect examples. Many of the characters reintroduced in those games were not seen in almost ten years.
Also, take a look at these stats:
Of the 30 characters currently in the series prior to 1997, only eight appeared in MK4 as principle characters. None of those characters were originally introduced in MK3 or its updates.
Of the seven principle characters originally introduced in MK4, only one appeared in Deadly Alliance.
Of the eight prinicple characters originally introduced in Deadly Alliance, only three appeared in Deception.
As you can see, many characters are made, but very few are catered to, thus leaving very little for the gamers to go with. This is why we have so many "less popular" characters.

Saying "It's rigged" would imply that the voting is influenced, it's not. I have voted for less popular characters like Meat and Mokap. This is a fair contest.

You explained it better than I did. ^^

Nightwolf has always been boring to me, both in looks, storyline and gameplay... until the new MK. The way he was represented in this game was absolutely amazing and they really upped his gameplay. I still think he looks absolutely boring, but he at least got an interesting alternate outfit. His last scene with Sindel was one of the best scenes in the game and he's totally won my respect.
However I have always had a soft spot for Kenshi. His story at first seemed a bit plain though, another vengeance story, but I love the twist of his character being blind and using telekinesis and that it is being different than Ermac's other than one move which was taught to him by Ermac himself. In the new MK, the distinction between them became greater and Kenshi got an alot more unique moveset including his blade with his telekinetic abilities which is just awesome.
Oh, and DAT ASS!

stupid indian that has zero appeal aesthetically and is pretty much a ripoff of the other fighting game indians before him like T-hawk and Chief Thunder.
vs
overrated ermac clone and favorite of Boon forced onto us in MK9.
Since i hate Nightwolf even more. I'll vote Kenshi.

Kenshi because Juniority.
Bitch please, I just prefer him to Nightwolf, who I actually like quite alot. Nightwolf really shined in Storymode in MK9 and I hope Kenshi makes it to MK10 so that he can do the same there.

sorry nightwolf i never liked you and kenshi ur k u get my vote as to you ermac im votin for you to
In the MK3 era, I liked Nightwolf, but not too much.
Then Deception came, and while there weren't much of a story around him, he had one hell of a moveset. His styles were freakin' amazing! The MK2011 came along, and he really got a chance to shine. Sure, he killed Sindel, which pissed me the hell off, but I still love the guy. Furthermore, he's probably the only genuinely peaceful character in the series, and I like that.
As for Kenshi, I like him, but I never truly got into him storywise. To be honest, it really seemed like just another revenge story. His gameplay in MKDA and Deception was awesome, but that's all he really had going for him, to me.
Overall, I'm voting for Nightwolf, because he's awesome.

Kenshi.
While MK9 certainly gave a so much needed boost to Nightwolf personality and role, Kenshi tops him when it comes to actual style and coolness. Nightwolf is an awesome too, but still he is a bit on the boring side, while Kenshi - dynamic, fast, ruthless. His costumes maybe not interesting that much and his story is plain, but he is one of the most stylish MK characters and his personality conveyed through his moves very well.

Halt! Nightwolf can move his wang with his mind too, up AND down.
Seriously though, I voted for the Wolf of the Night. Both of them are great.

I voted for Nightwolf. Kenshi was miles better in MK9 than he was in DA... but he still has so much unrealized potential. I loved Nightwolf in MK9.

Nightwolf's certainly one of the more consistent characters in the series as far as gameplay and design goes - which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. I don't have a strong opinion on him. He's okay, but he's always fallen short of being awesome. I did think his involvement in story mode was pretty great, though.
Kenshi is my favourite character. Always liked his gameplay and thought they did a fantastic job updating him for MK9, which really makes me look forward to seeing how other characters might be improved. I always found it irritating when people called him an Ermac clone, so it's nice that we seem to be past that.
Stylish is a good word.

I'll take Kenshi, please. I like what they did with Nightwolf in newest version, but it doesn't change the fact that he's been boring as sin since his inception. So much more that could've been done with both his look and his story. His gameplay has always been pretty sweet, which is what matters most, I guess, but Kenshi's got the better look, a more interesting background and solid gameplay as well.
