Does anybody that disliked the idea of the movie being made by this guy now like the idea after reading his thoughts and plans for the real thing? On the flip side, does anyone that like it now want something else?

Just curious.

To tell the truth, I'm a little more accepting of it now that I've read his thoughts and he seems like a genuine fan. I still think the acting and the dialogue is terrible, though.

It's still too vague to tell either way. I can't really know what he means truly without seeing it. He could just mean "bring mystical things in line with reality, but keep them "interesting" and different".

Yes. It'd be a cool movie.

To be honest, the interview made me even less interested. Blah, blah, blah, classics....yadda, yadda, yadda, icons.

The guy who made Daredevil was a huge fan. Doesn't always translate into a good movie.

Not really. To get the mysticism in there, Baraka would have to NOT be a defective plastic surgeon, and Reptile would have to NOT be a grown-up human harlequin baby person.

Nothing in the interview really inspires confidence that he's going to do that.

He said the mystical aspect has to be approached carefully, and I agree. It clearly was not in the Anderson film. But dismissing the other-worldly aspects of classic characters just tells me that this guy isn't willing to take the needed risks to make a good MK film.

The "Raiden won't just be an electrician with lasers on his arms" gave me a LITTLE faith...at least it's starting to sound like it's actually about Mortal Kombat now as opposed to before.

But basically...well let me put it this way.

Before the interview, I had a strong sense of discomfort tying knots in my gut because it wasn't truly Mortal Kombat but so many people loved it anyway and I hate that feeling of being surrounded by people who aren't real fans and only care about the gore.

Now that I know it IS Mortal Kombat, just an inaccurate version with smaller changes, like there IS magic, but Reptile and Baraka aren't part of it, and Sonya and Jax are smalltime cops instead of in the army, I'm just feeling a dull, disinterested "meh" in my brain instead, like it'll be just like the Resident Evil films or Tomb Raider or Super Mario Bros or every other video game adaptation made to date were. The only difference between RE and this is slick cinematography, a hard R rating, and no bullshit "Alice" character created just for the director's wife.
So I'm physically relieved because my stomach has relaxed. That's kinda nice. But I'm still not getting the kind of movie I want, so don't expect me to cheer.

I'm extremely interested in seeing this as a movie. Especially knowing that some of the magic will still be in there. He seems like a great guy with a unique vision, I say go for it!

Amazing interview. He sounds both highly knowledgeable, skilled, and passionate about this project.

Everything he said I agree with. Whether he can pull it off or not is another issue entirely, but he's inspired confidence in me regardless. He sounded very aware of the minority's criticisms of Baraka and Reptile, and the lack of mysticism (chiefly the "Raiden is an electrician" jabs).

Mainly, it sounds like this guy has a confident vision for what he wants to do with Mortal Kombat. I can't even imagine the last time Mortal Kombat had a confident vision for anything...

Bring it on, I say. He did all that in a few days of shooting and $7500? Geez, he could blow theaters apart with a REAL budget and time to polish it up!

Couldn't have said it any better. He was the first person to have the world talking about MK in God knows how long.

I will say this. There is a single moment in the demo footage that gives me a positive feeling.

"Hanzo Hasashi is dead. My name...is Scorpion." is a REALLY cool moment. Except for the lack of a mask, it actually feels like the character from the games when he says that and we get to see the eyes.

Now that I know skin condition Reptile and Dr. Baraka are going to be adjacent to some guys with magic powers, I feel much better about the drastic departure from the source material. It definitely changes everything.

Only, not at all, because it's still DVD bargain bin bound absurdity.
Y'know. Next to the crime drama Street Fighter movie that did the same thing, sans the cheap and nasty gimmick.

Maybe in your opinion, but for the 95% of the people that like it, I am sure the movie would profit quite well.

If by some twist of fate it actually happens, I'll be very interested to see how it measures up against other internet favourite clunkers, ala Kick-Ass.

I'd be surprised if it could do much better, but you never know!
A-Team's probably doing alright for itself right now. There's no accounting for taste, these days, eh?

I never got the whole "I hate something, so instead of stating it ONCE and going on with my life, I'm going to sit here and say it over and over until I turn blue in the face" craze.

I'm getting a very strong "Legend of Chun-Li" feeling from this. He's completely rewriting the characters, and frankly, dulling them down a LOT.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that it's gonna be right up Chun-Li's alley, though not quite as repulsive.

So yea, fuck this movie. Get someone who gives a shit about MK's canon.

Well...where do I begin??

First off, I’m glad to be reading about the strong opinions of so many passionate MK fans out there. The opinions, whether in support or in dissent, show how much we care about the possible direction the new mortal kombat is now taking, but hopefully also influences and fuels the new developmental approach that the franchise needs to take.

The video sample that was shown looks spectacular and shows a lot of promise. The visual style, akin to the art of Saw and Hostel, really goes along with the bloody, gory, and dark theme that has been intended for the new mortal kombat.

Now, speaking of what the video has shown so far on how it has begun treating the backgrounds of two fighters, baraka and reptile, it’s easy to assume that the new direction that the director is aiming for is one where the mythology, mysticism and supernatural elements that have been driving the story of mortal kombat are absent. However, we have only seen what they have done to two fighters so far. We have no idea what they plan to do with the rest of the cast, let alone who they are going to include in this franchise. Also, as I just mentioned, it’s only a sample and a pitch for a movie. They got the tone and ambience perfectly nailed. I think everybody can agree to that. Where I read that people are uncomfortable with, and I concur with this sentiment, is the chance that they may want to do away with the supernatural element in order to make the story of MK much more relevant and credible.

I don’t think it would be fair for some fans, even if they only seem like a minority (for now), that they do away with the fantastical nature of MK. As it has been mentioned before, MK has charming values, such as the imaginative ideas of other realms taking over and dominating earth, fighters with magical powers, and really outlandish fatalities. I mean, one of the fighting arenas, the dead forest, was in the outworld! You can’t take such an iconic arena away! The trick is to use the technology we have now to ingeniously blend everything in and make a serious, R-rated mk movie with a modified story that still retains all of the elements that have made mortal kombat stand out.

For example, we could say that Shang Stung is an occultist, who’s an expert in black magic and has been able to contact the powerful sorcerer Shao Kahn who shares his vision of taking over the world. I mean, it’s a start...

As for Johnny Cage, man, they really need to darken his image. I was thinking perhaps that he’s this bad boy type of actor. He’s always getting into all sorts of trouble, but he’s a great fighter and talented actor. He gets involved in the underground fighting tournaments that is run by Shang Tsung and the media finds out about this and his career ends because of this. So now, he has no other solution but to somehow continue to sign up for fights to earn some cash.

As far as baraka and reptile are concerned, they need to do some big tweaks to their background to somehow retain their original backstories. It shouldn’t be too difficult with reptile’s character, all you could say is that he (or she) was an experimental lifeform between a human and an animal...something like that..like a product from the movie Splice or something.

But for baraka, well, they really just erased everything from the bio...but we could say that the Doctor that turns into Baraka actually has an unusual dark family history and his Baraka roots took over..something like that...

My whole point is that however they decide to do the movie, they should make a huge effort in retaining all properties that make MK what it is.

This is just my opinion of course. But if this little Teaser/Spoof was a test to perceive reactions from WB and fans. I think it worked out perfectly, from some peoples reactions anyway. If this concept had been real and this was an entire movie, it would still sell regardless of hate or disappointment.

No offense but most of MKO and a LOT of other sites at the time disliked MKvsDCU. But sales figures don't lie. Over 2million plus copies sold. The same would of happened with this if it was a full fledged movie. Sales for it would gross. Due to it being another product baring the name MK. I myself loved this. Yea the Actors/Actress didn't resemble anything close to the original concept, the fight scene was rather Interesting though.

This thread solidified my opinion that the Mk fanbase became inbred and to me, is basically wanking over the achievements of two decades past.

Move on. I for myself have seen enough spandex, enough Outworld, and enough meaningless deaths. Frankly this is more entertaining than the canon MK for me.

What worried me was the director saying he wanted to avoid "cheesy", "campy", and "over the top". Since those are kinda things that I really dig.

So if MK doesn't do what you want it to, you're going to just leave the community? If you really dislike Mortal Kombat so much, shouldn't you just move on yourself?

Crow, please look back three or four years and tell me what I did back then. And how active I am now.

Just because MK faded out, I still enjoy some of the people's rants here. Plus, Rebirth sparked my interest.
