First of all, let me break down the word "Fan" for you:

–noun
an enthusiastic devotee, follower, or admirer of a sport, pastime, celebrity, etc.: a baseball fan; a great fan of Charlie Chaplin.

1. I am devoted to Mortal Kombat.
2. I follow Mortal Kombat.
3. I am an admirer of Mortal Kombat.

I am currently 20 years old, and my first memory of playing MK was when I was 3 years old with my older brothers of 7 and 11, at a neighbors house on nintendo in 1993. It's the first game I can visually remember ever playing.

Ever since then I have played all the other MKs throughout my life upon growing up. I remember playing MK 3 and 4 in the arcades with my brothers once again. We also owned MK 2 and 3 on Super Nintendo, as well as MK 4 later on. Saw both movies in theatres, as well as owned them on VHS and I have watched them both countless times. I initally came to this site sometime in late 2001. I have since used this site, used to be called MK5.org as I am sure you know, as my homepage ever since. I have gone to tons more MK forums since then, and followed every game's release and made many posts discussing each one on this very site from MK:DA all the way up to now. I own figurines, games, movies, apparel, code books...you name it.

So how exactly does me being ok with this 8 minute pitch for a potential movie that 90% of the population approves of, make me not entitled to the word "fan"? You sir, are foolish if you believe the ignorant claims you are making.

This all means nothing if you support this short movie. Because by doing it you simply agree to throw off all the aspects which made MK what it is. You can call this "Saw", "Seventh" etc. One thing is for sure that you can't call it MK because (except names) this has nothing to do with MK.

Want me to define you what "MK Fan" means? Well be it: A person who loves the original concept of MK which was created with the original creators like Ed Boon and mainly John Tobias. Actually Boon was only the programmer and Tobias was behind all the characters and storyline so 90% of MK is the MK which Tobias created.

Consistency? Oh, you mean that thing that all the lovers are afraid of?

I don't know why I didn't think of this bulletproof perspective earlier.
To think, I wasted all that harvard education on things like comparisons and references and logical deduction. I took for granted that we could assume twenty years of fiction was still what it was, when all I really needed to do was note the obvious fear of consistency that's rampant in this thread.

Why do you fear consistency? Don't be afraid of consistency.
A steady throughline of canonical fact is what we all live with. It's realistic, it's mature, it's very contemporary. Unlike your faces .glasses

So basically in your defense, as Tobias left, we can't all be MK fans because Tobias left with that 90% when he left Midway.

You didn't answer the question regardless. So now that Tobias is gone, is there even such a thing as a MK fan? Why even care, if that's how you define it, since Tobias is gone and not coming back?

Vogel is a superior storyteller to be honest, I prefer his vision of Mortal Kombat. Deadly Alliance and Deception had great concepts and stories. Sure Armageddon is an abomination from a story point of view, but Vogel (and other team members) fleshed the characters out so much in in those two games. They took former boring old ninja palette swaps and made them interesting.

Regardless, this is a bit of a side discussion. I'm just not sure what Tobias has to do with being a "real MK fan" at all.

Are we seriously arguing whether people who like/dislike this reinterpretation are "true fans" or not?

Everyone take a big chill pill, step back, and look at the big picture.

Even IF this new direction was the official direction, assumed by the games for years to come....... so what? Will MK2 suddenly become "tarnished"? Will MK: Deadly Alliance lose its merit? Will Armageddon sprout wings, become a real boy, and become a good game by comparison?

Franchises need innovation, reinterpretation, and evolution to survive. I think we MK fans have taken the series for granted and assumed it would always be the way it is, settling for blander games and mediocrity game after game. The reason MK:Deadly Alliance was so well received was because it was an evolution of the concepts of the game.

The best game series out there undergo many, many shifts.

Zelda has shifted from a mature, dark style to a cartoonish cel-shaded style, and back again.

Metroid has gone from a 2D shooter game to a 3D First-person adventure game.

Resident Evil shifted from a corridor-driven, fixed-cameras, tank-controls zombie puzzle game to an over-the-shoulder action game that eschewed zombies entirely.

Mario games have gravitated from side-scrolling platformers to sprawling 3D adventure games.

Hell, look at Mortal Kombat itself. Rarely has a game series seen so many interpretations. You have the fairly realistic MK1 game to the complicated, extremely supernatural Armageddon, to the comic book-ish crossover with DC, to campy PG-13 movies, to a kids cartoon, to an awesomely 90's-era comic book, to horrible adventure spin-off games, to techno soundtracks entirely inspired by the series, to a touring bus show, etc. etc.

You can't accept all of that history and just out-right discredit it.

Say what you will, but this was still a project done with more heart, enthusiasm, creativity, originality, and talent than the past few MK games and certainly the last MK movie. It obviously was done with care, thought, and lots of hard work from very talented individuals, and yet some fans just outright dismiss it because it's not the same old stuff we've seen for almost 20 years.

We've been there. We've done that. Why not try something radically different?

Nobody is a bigger MK fan than I am. I grew up with the series. I played the very first game. I was part of the generation that lined up in arcades, panicked politicians into creating the ESRB, loved the "blood code", dressed up as Sub-Zero for Halloween, loved the original movies, met my first girlfriend when she killed me in MK2 with Kitana's Kiss of Death, and I'm almost done with college learning how to be a game modeler so I could hopefully stop being just a "fan" and could start being a contributor with the MK team on the next and best MK games to come. I'm dead serious.

So, for the skeptics, I say "give it a chance". If it's bad, so what? At least it tried something new. It tried to innovate. It tried to be more than just another cookie-cutter installment. As a game designer, innovation like that is insanely crucial for a brand to survive...

For the supporters, I also do caution that a 100% realistic approach would certainly lessen the "charm" the originals had with half-dragon monsters and over-the-top cartoon goofiness.

But, again, we've had the same damn thing for years. YEARS. No innovation. No evolution. No maturing. That doesn't mean a total disconnect, but at the very least we need SOMETHING new. And I eagerly await a day when MK is no longer a dirty shame to talk about, but it's flat-out cool again.

People say Gears of War is cool. People say Street Fighter is cool. People say God of War is cool.... people do NOT say Mortal Kombat is cool... at least not until this teaser trailer.

Nah. You just fear logical consistency.
