Drahmin was good...in concept only. That concept art they released prior to the launch of MKDA was amazing...there was more thought and backstory put into Drahmin than even the entire Mortal Kombat franchise storyline from MK1 - MK4 in that concept art...and they used NONE of it.
That's the majority of MK characters in a nutshell.
I feel like that entire era of Mortal Kombat was "We have 2 years to make this game, and we're going to spend 1 year and 10 months thinking up cool backstories and concepts that we aren't going to use."
I think that's MK in general.
I don't want to derail this topic into something completely unrelated, but if you're still feeling that way after MK9 and MKX, I honestly have to say Mortal Kombat isn't for you. They've rebounded nicely since becoming NRS under the WB brand, and to me, have been able to shake off the stench of Midway nicely. This site has proven time and again that fans will always find something to flail their arms around and bitch like the whiny crybabies that the MK fan base has become, but it's not really fair to say that MK9 and MKX are still stuck in that old rut.

MKX is the best MK since Deadly Alliance and I love what they've done with the series. I also wouldn't say what Midway did was "stench". Just because I have some negative opinions about some things does not mean I'm not passionate about Mortal Kombat.
It is your job,
Your duty,
Your HONOR,
to vote for the most masculine, most badarse bloke the world has ever seen. Wanna pick that drongo, Daegon? Go ahead. It's not MY fault that you're asking for a knife in the spine. Just remember: as you're lying on the floor, quivering from the blood loss and taking your final glance upwards at the lone red eye staring down at you,
remember,
remember the that this situation you put yourself in could have been avoided with just
one
simple
vote.
The right vote.
The vote for KANO.
Really, guys?
Red Dragon vs Black Dragon. I can't believe you guys would prefer Kano to win.
Daegon has so much mythology to him. He was born from an astral entity thousands of years ago, fought against Shao Kahn alongside his father and brother in his first unsuccessful invasion of Edenia, as the konquest mode in Armageddon teaches us. Then, something horrible made him abandon all reason and betray his family (and that something has a name starting with Sh....).
Creating such a powerful sicety in Earthrealm, thousands of years old is a big accomplishment. There could not have been subsidiaries like the Black dragon if daegon hadn't come to Earthrealm. Probably a really long time ago, as the ancient God in Canaan and the Levant region was Dagon, the inspiration for the NRS character.
Kano is...ummm....just a 40-50 year old merc.
Easy choice for me. Yeah, Kano has ok gameplay in the latest game, but having a playable Daegon who summons his dragon during fights would be amazing!!
Shao Kahn did nothing wrong
Daegon, of course.

Yeah...the Red Dragon. The group responsible for such "classic" and "iconic" characters as Hsu Hao and Mavado. No thanks.
Kano. He's the only Australian in the world I actually like.
Haha sorry Macy. You're cool too I guess.

I know, Daegon trumps Kano from a background perspective and in terms of how long he's lived or what he did in MKA's story, I get that he beats Kano. He's more "important," I guess? Like Quan Chi or Raiden or Shao Khan, he has the potential to be a major player.
My main issue is that the Red Dragon feels borderline irrelevant in the new timeline and Daegon himself had a horrendous character design. Maybe one of the worst in the game. His face looks like demonic Fred Durst, he has comically large shoulder pads, a cape (for some reason) and some exceedingly nondescript moves for a game that actually did a solid job of giving most of the characters a bit more in this department (at least during the 3D era).
But while I know that all makes it sounds like I despise him, I don't, and my apologies if I put off any hardcore Daegon fans.
Truth be told, I like the Red Dragon. Give Hsu Hao a complete makeover. Juat rebuild him from the bottom up. I'd like to see NRS take him as a challenge. They made Stryker awesome in MK9, now for the next level.
I also think that Mavado has an awesome design, just flash out the use of the ropes ala Omega Red in X-Men: CotA. I'm sure they could come up with some crazy cool ideas. Just keep that sort of shadowy, trench coat wearing vibe (sans hookswords) like how he looks in his MKDA select screen pic.
So yeah, Daegon and his clan have potential, though to me, Daegon would need the rework treatment. Keep the backstory, but rebuild his look and moves from scratch.
This is why I look at him and I think that right now, Kano's better. I can look at a character like Drahmin and see a cool look and a cool story, but lacking in gameplay, but when you're missing two of those three? Potential alone doesn't get you past a great original character that's had several looks, a bunch of different moves and they somehow always manage to make him cool and fun.
That said, I hope we see a redone Daegon, demigod and leader of the Red Dragon in the next MK.
A lot of MK fans would struggle to remember Daegon while doing a countdown list of characters.
Kano may not be the most famous of the original 10, but he was cool enough to get into not one, but two successful movies: MK1 and Wreck-It Ralph. And he's considered a highlight of the former.
Kano it is.

Battlelines are drawn in a bitter grudge match! Mavado is a card carrying member of the notorious Red Dragon clan. Operating in the shadows for centuries, the order are one of the premiere criminal organizations operating between worlds. Kenshi was once a self-serving sword saint, but his blind pride was undone when his literal sight was stolen. Working for the Special Forces, he infiltrated the Red Dragon clan - only to lose his beloved wife to their sinister machinations. It's payback time! Can Mavado resist the push of the sword saint, or will he be cut down for his crimes? Choose their destiny!... FIGHT!
Personality: Kenshi. I didn't like Mavado in the comics.
Design: Everyone keeps going on about Mavado's design being amazing, but I don't really like it. If anything, it just looks like the physical embodiment of the 80's. Kenshi.
Finishers: Kenshi.
Backstory: Kenshi.
In a fight: Kenshi, with ease.
The blind telepathic swordsman wins against the Red Dragon with hookswords 6-0.
Ugh...Mavado.
Kenshi all the way. Discussion not even needed. Why does Mavado even have a vote at all?
Haha I like your devotion to the original trilogy. I know you've stated your disdain for the 3D era multiple times in the past but I respectfully disagree. I dig those games. Even in their hammy, poor excuses for a fighting game state, I'm not ashamed to admit I enjoy the hell out of them. I voted Mavado purely because I played him more in Deadly Alliance and I'd love to see him back. Kenshi is cool, but I'm sick of everyone treating him like the only good character to come from that era.
Dairou, Darrius and Kobra are still terrible though
I know, Mavado's stuck in the Red Dragon, who ultimately went nowhere in the last timeline, but I'll be damned if he wasn't fun as hell to play as. His moveset on a 2-d plane would be super fun and if the Red Dragon are going to play a part in the next game(I suspect they might) I hope Mavado is not discarded in favor of a new Red Dragon member.
Mavado BOYZ!
