Ed Boon should know how to explain Ermac. It's not like it's something accidental. There's a counter for it. It was programmed to be in the game.

It's not just that Scorpion glitches up and turns red. It seems like no one here understands what Ed is saying. Ermac is not a glitch. It's a program. It's something he specifically intended to be in the game. Ermac's purpose is to pop up when a glitch happens("something that's not supposed to happen") until the game sorts itself out. It's not the glitch, it's supposed to be helping correct the glitch.

In Smash TV when the game had trouble you would be warped to a secret room until the game sorted itself out. He's saying it's like that. It's an event that happens that corrects the game.

There is no doubt there is something in the game called "ermacs". Anyone denying that has no idea what they're talking about. It's right there in the audits. The question is what exactly "ermacs" is.

I've been reading and re-reading Ed's answer and am beginning to think he didn't mean to say it was the red ninja afterall. He refers to it only as "an event" and they both call it an "it" not really speaking like it's a person you see or fight. They don't say "something happens and you fight him" they are more like "something happens and you see it". IMO it doesn't sound like they're describing a fight with a person, or even a cutscene or whatever with a person. It could simply be some special kind of reset or ROM check but the rumors and mystery of it made Ed be vague on purpose. Notice he acts all mysterious about it being in MK II too? That is such a blatant attempt to add mystique to the game instead of just telling us what it is.

The counter for "ermacs" was removed when they switched hardware. That leads me to believe whatever it is is probably just something internal and with the hardware, so it may not show anything on screen at all. Probably like the "Shawn Attacks" and "Watchdogs" in MK II, something to do with the hardware and not shown in the game.

Sakura, what about Johnny Cage Transformations in MK3? That's something that is in the audits and isn't in the game either, you think that is also something with the hardware?

Oh and outworld222:

"All the rumors come from the players themselves," said Tobias in an interview with Flux magazine. "And they either believe them or they don't."

That says it all. The guy writing the column saying that Ermac is true, is no different from you, or anyone else saying it. He is a disgrace.

Ermac is not in MK1.

"ermacs" was in the audits LONG before the rumors about hidden stuff started. It was in the game before it even came out and got popular.

If they were trying to make people think it was a hidden character they'd have made it "Ermac appearances", not just "ermacs".

Plus "ermacs" is in the operator's manual as "error traps", which means it's a legit part of the hardware and not something to confuse fans.

Also, here is more evidence, a recurring MK theme...

It's funny how in the game audits for MK1, there's ERMACS, in MK2 they say "ERMAC DOES NOT EXIST", pertaining to MK1, in the MK2 audits there is Kano Transformations, but in MK3 you see when you do Nightwolf's friendship, "I have never seen a Kano transformation" and "No but I can do a Raiden transformation", and this is pertaining to MK2, that's not a coincidence, just more proof that Ermac ain't in MK1. Chew on that. CEARM ODSE NTO EXITS is the icing on the cake, and you guys just don't like the taste so you choose to not bite it. Perhaps we can have a little analogy here:

MK1:Ermac::MK2:Kano Transformations

www.darktemplarz.com/mkt/raiden.gif

Both in the audits, both don't exist, both are referred to in the following MK and said to be false. Looks pretty clear to me.

oh man I was just about to say this is hopeless, but I need to point out to you that ofcourse ermac is not in mk2! God, hes a confirmed glitch ed boon never heard of, an error where the program tryes to stop itself from makeing errors (only in mk1, the technology got better) However in the rare occurence that the macro error occurs, scorpions character loads from the main memory as follows: I dont know what color ninja suit to wear, let me wear red, its easier on my memory only when a glitch happens. And to indicate that a glitch happened, Ill call myself Ermac, shortening it for memory purposes from macro error. The only difference is scorpions name is replaced with ermac, and his costume is red.

Now the following set of events occurs only when the old (and very classic) mk1 cartridge does a mistake. The newer cartridges will not make any mistakes of that nature.

That is completely illogical, you are way over simplifying it, and you have no idea how a computer works lol. Replacing things rather than calling on the preset commands would be more work, and no this is NOT a confirmed glitch. Stop saying it is. You are just making things up and changing things around to try and make your claim seem legit, and I have said before, what if the second player wasn't Scorpion, what if it was Kano? Or any other character, no it was just easiest to fake the ninjas. If this type of ERMAC really does happen, and someone picks a different P2 character, or fights a different one than Scorpion, will this character be red, or it's original pallet color? It's fake buddy, fakity fake. ERMACS are not what you seem to think they are. The fact that you can't see that there is a correlation between the audits in MK1 and MK2, and the messages that ARE WRITTEN ON SCREEN SAYING NO YOU GUYS ARE LIARS makes you more dense than I previously thought was humanly possible.

Ermac is still not in MK1.

the macro error seems to be installed in scorpion
(he bears the burdon for the glitch)
Its doesnt have to do anything at all with kano, simply because there is no association between the macro error and kano, or any other ninja for that matter, including subzero.

You are making this up as you go along.

You believe in something you've never seen with your own eyes, and that a book says is true. You are putting Ermac in the same hand as God here.

You also seem to skip over every bit of info that I put in and only read when I insult you, so maybe I have to interweave the insults with the information. Let's try.

Moron, the game audits in MK1 and MK2, retard, both include a counter, idiot, for something that people created rumors about, nimrod, and in the next version of each game, baffoon, they rectify the rumors, imbecile, by saying they are false, cretin, by putting messages in the game, sloth.

SuperMarioBro, who are you to say people can't argue about things in gaming forums? Seriously, you need to crawl back under your rock or something because I'm officially sick of you. You commented in another thread about me going off on things. Just do yourself a favor and clam up. You have no business in here if you're not going to add to the discussion.

I saw on a thread one time, "Arguing in forums is like the special olympics, even if you win, you're still retarded" and I thought that was the greatest thing I've ever seen, but I still do it, and I guess I'm retarded, but I can't seem to make these two guys understand that when something isn't true, IT-JUST-ISN'T-TRUE.

Here's what we've got so far:

An EGM Magazine from 1993 with a polaroid picture, that could very easily be fake, of what he said he found to be a red ninja he fought in Mortal Kombat 1.

An interview from, Gamepro was it? With Ed Boon and Roger Sharpe both saying that the supposed character he found is an error that shouldn't happen, and it's impossible to reproduce, and simply labeled it as an error macro, and some people think that Ermac was put into UMK3 because he was a hidden character in MK1, but he was put in as a fan service character to give life to a rumor that was not true. If the head programmer of the game didn't know about this, then that means he didn't put it in the game himself. No one knows how to reproduce the error, and you can safely say that because of this, it's a lie.

But again, Ermac isn't in MK1. It's a lie guys, a Macro Lie. The ERMAC system was there so they could check up to see how many times the system had to correct itself due to bugs. I bet you Tony Casey looked at the audits and saw maybe a #1 next to ERMACS, and thought since it was under Reptile battles, it must have been another hidden character, if it was, it would more than likely have said, "Ermac battles." I think that is a MORE than fair assessment of the situation, but, this is giving the whole scenario the benefit of the doubt that it's true to begin with. As far as the bulk of the old school MK community is concerned, it's hogwash.

SuperMarioBro there is your rant. Yell all you want, I can't wait to read it and then make fun of you, you're a scumbag. At least that other guy had enough guts to call me an asshole and I respect that.

This is the most attention the classic gaming thread has gotten in a while and I think that's fun and healthy. One other thing, I saw a guy say that "Whatever anyone says to contradict what I say here is false" that's totally delusional and it's an effort to make people believe something that isn't true, it's not true because it's proven, and he also mentions in his bio that Ermac was well hidden in MK1, they wrote that storyline after the fact, after the rumor, to give him a reason to be there. Then they changed it because that was stupid, he wasn't really there, and that's that. According the MK storyline, with Ermac existing around the time of MK1, he didn't do ANYTHING, so it's as if he wasn't really there anyway.
Matt

Why does it always have to be official? And BTW, to counter-attack, WHO ARE YOU to argue over a few letters, a stupid Red Ninja, or minor things? If you are gonna argue about something, make it something worth making a big deal.

I don't care if you think I crawl under a rock.

Scumbag? Takes one to know one, Over Reaction Brother. BTW, you should change your name to SuperReactionBro.

If you call me a scumbag over a Red Ninja, that is where you are a whiny baby.

Opinion is not fact, and no matter what, no one is right, so stop playing God here, and if you are going to argue, don't yell at MKSecrets and be mature.

I have the guts to shove that post in your face, so make fun of it while you are coming up with another rave and/or rant, and post, I'll make fun of it while you make fun of my post. So take that and shove it in your ears, KungBroken.

P.S. Stop acting like God and treating Big named people like crap. One day, everyone will be against you, and maybe hate you, I had that happen on a few boards, I apoligized, everything went on. So take my 'scumbag' advice and remember it.

You have to read slower or something because you seriously don't comprehend anything. I never made up a story about a costume changing Kano. I said, giving the benefit of the doubt that the actual color change glich is real, and hypothetically speaking, the character he fought against way back in 1993 was Kano or anyone else, and not Scorpion, we would be talking about something entirely different right now, because the rumor would be about the red Kano. You making up that Scorpion is the only character this happens with is just ridiculous. You don't know that for various reasons. You are basing that assumption because it has only happened once, and it happened to be Scorpion.

Now getting back to reality...Ermac is not in MK1.

This will be my last post on this, Im gonna gracefully step aside, and let other intelligent members take a good example from my explanations over the past pages, they are excelent, and i do not wish to repeat it again and again in the same post.

Jerk, now youre talking about a red Kano, yet claiming at the same time that that is impossible because a glitch does not exist, even though you claim it to be in the credits somewhere.

This will be my last sentence: Youre the one that mentioned Kano first, not me, and Im too lazy to go and look it up on the page, but im a 100% sure of it, and everybody on the forum can look that up.

And here is a hint: Dont assault people characters, they wont stand for that, like SuperMarioBro demonstrated, and as have I. From now on and forth, I will only read what you have to say. Errrrmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaac foreeeeeeeeeeveeeeeeer.

Wow if you got everyone on a board to hate you you really MUST be a scumbag. You're a child and not worth my words, at least outworld222 is kind of creative what with his little fairy tales inbetween rumor spreading. I have seen kids stand up between other kids in school when I was little and just put their hands on their ears and yell, "Everyone stop fighting!" It's actually kind of amusing, but in the end, those kids are the ones who probably eat the most paste. That's what you are trying to be. Saying "Who are you to argue" about any topic is out and out mindless. I would rather you add to their side and try and prove their futile effort than come in here and say "You big meanie, stop fighting about something nobody cares about." Apparently a lot of people care about this because a lot of people have put their thoughts into it, and many do it over and over again. I saw one post, tried to set someone straight, and then it turned into this. The first post again was, "Where Ed Boon CLEARLY states that Ermac appears in MK1" and that wasn't true, and the majority of MK fans agree that there is no Ermac in MK1, and that was a common belief for years. Now 11 years after the rumor starts, people still spread it and care about it. I hadn't even thought about the rumor of Ermac being in MK1 for literally years until I saw that post and it rekindled some old rumor bashing that I use to do many years ago. I am a VERY rational person, but I do like to have a lot of fun, and make logical posts, the insults I throw in are usually for fun, sometimes I mean it though. The little thing I did with outworld, with the insults mixed in with the info, that was a joke, but I do really think he needs to read what I post more carefully because I put forth enough effort to read and analyze everything. Don't say you don't have the time or patience because obviously you do.

Still believing in 11 year old rumors that virtually no one else believes in, and a lot of people don't even remember is sad. The signature pic again is for fun, I just haven't got around to changing it, but I think I have an idea for one.

I dunno, I don't really take offense to anything they say about me, it's the endless rederick about Ed Boon saying that Ermac is in MK1, and he never ever said that, in fact, he DID say that no one has found Ermac yet in MK1 with a smiley face after it. So, if Ermac IS in MK1, whatever that guy Tony Casey found was not Ermac, if the story isn't bogus to begin with. Boon was asked very generally if there are any hidden secrets we haven't found yet, the fact that he mentions that particular rumor in a joking fashion should make you say "Damn I guess he's not really there" Not, "See, see, he IS there." It's really a case of people reading what they want to read, and not examining the statements. I have brought forth an overwhelming amount of evidence that crushes the EGM pic, and the Gamepro interview, and the GP interview doesn't clarify anything about the hidden character other than they think it's an error that shouldn't happen anyway. I have done more than necessary and yet people still keep repeating the same nonsense, if this thread is to be closed, then so be it, but all three of the guys who have defended the Ermac rumor have stated at one time or another that the Ermac character is in MK1 as if it were the law of physics, and that is not true, it amazes me still how people can say things that are so untrue. Maybe they didn't realize it when they said, but God, when someone educates you rationally and logically, with deduction and why something isn't true, why go on saying it is? As long as Ermac cannot be reproduced in any way shape or form, he's not there. I tried to come up with something to agree on, and here it is:

Take it for face value, that in a very unlikely event the hardware has an error that it cannot recover from normally, it goes into a mode on the next match that doesn't load the player two pallet, in this case with Scorpion causing him to be red. This glitch after being discovered was given the name Ermac, by fans/players, because Ed Boon thinks that it has something to do with his error program code called ERMAC. And Midway put Ermac in UMK3 to give him an official status in the game, and its history.

Happy?

There is no hidden fighters from any MK that have not been found yet...don't get me wrong, I'm an MK Junkie...and I would love to find out Kano is in MK2 and etc, but it just ain't happening..

I'd love to believe Ermac is in MK..I'd love to believe Kano is in MK2...I'd love to believe Iron Man and Tony Hawk are in UMK3...but they just simply aren't...

Animalities, Brutalities, Ermac, etc were all put into the game because they all started as rumors...the fans claimed they were there...so to please the fans, Boon an co. put them in the games...but they were never there before that point..

'omg I founded Errmack in MK1 and he did a 'Nude-ality'...come on...not true...

Oh, outworld222, it never ever said 'Ermac' on the lifebar...now if it did, sure that would change the tide of this whole convo, but it says Scorpion if I'm not mistaken....but we'll never know, cause it's almost impossible to ever see this 'Error Macro' that gives you the 'Red Scorpion'..

Same here, and NOT 'cause I "lost", 'cause not one of your insults or pieces of evidence against what I and MORE THAN 3 PEOPLE (like you claim) believe changes that.

The reason why is 'cause I'm not gonna waste any more time talking to someone as stubborn as you. And not stubborn 'cause you believe Ermac or the red ninja that appears when MK1 screws up who was called Ermac by the fans DOESN'T exist. Stubborn 'cause you can't simply accept the fact that the 3 pieces of evidence are good enough to warrant his existence.

You keep saying that WE are ignoring the facts against it (and so far, the only GOOD evidence you have is the message in MK2), yet it is YOU who does the exact same thing (except with the facts FOR it). The reason why we ignore 'em is 'cause we have the evidence FOR Ermac's existence to back us up.

So, like I said, this will be my last post in this thread, at least to discuss what I've said a dozen of times already about the 3 pieces of evidence that prove Ermac was in MK1.

I'll keep reading the thread, but to keep trying to counter what MK2KungBroken says...uh-uh. I have much better things to do.

If you have version 1.0.9.5 B of the UK rom, change the first 383030387A00 to 616E75737A00 to get the error macro thing to happen. There.
