Militaty Stance is exclusive to "covert ops" and it gives you access to only three moves the grab (which is a high throw), the reverse kartwheel (hits low), and Karwheel (which has bounce properites for juggling)

there is no ex versions of any of the moves under military stance, SOnya is not as cheap/abuse like the last game, where a Kartwheel/ex kartwheel was frequenlty used as a get out of jail free card.

I feel like the 2 gb patch will resolve some issues, for example her ex Leg Grab ( its called a Leg Slam but it doesnt do anything different)

Having seen half of Story Mode including its immediate ending and Sonya's chapter, being aware of her variations, and seen some admittedly weakly executed gameplay of hers, I am extremely satisfied with her showing in this game.

I want to talk about her Portrayal, keeping it as ostensibly spoiler-free as I can.

The goal in MKX evidently encompasses elevating Sonya Blade to an epitomized position of leadership for the Earthrealmers. She is Earthrealm's leader on all fronts: in command, in ambassadorship, as well as active defense. This is brilliant, but it is to be acknowledged that in showering Sonya with such a strong, but specific role, inevitably there will be losses. And indeed we're losing a few things as Sonya ascends to embody Earthrealm's defense.

These losses are minimal, and are strictly tied to Sonya's complete immersion within her military role. As the "cream of the crop" of Special Forces (which itself encapsulates other Earthrealm-based factions; more on that later), Sonya is presented to us very rigorously as a soldier-commander. Thus come lamented additions such as use of a drone and high-tech gear in favor of once iconic acrobatic feats and Chi-based powers ala Liu Kang and Cage. I continue to dislike the idea of the drone and bemoan the retconning of her corporeal energy, but I'm confident I'll grow used to what are essentially newly fashioned modules to her personality.

What we're gaining is much loftier in scope and something to be admired and appreciated, and cherished throughout the lifetime of this iteration. And that is a Sonya confidently boasted and empirically established as a protagonist to the Story, the lore's lead female character, and, really, the "Face of Earthrealm". In a new reality where past defenders have fallen and moved on, and where new faces are mingling with select classics to form a new world of Mortal Kombat, Sonya is given the mantle of Earthrealm's Khan, to put it bluntly and hilariously---she is to it what Kotal hoped to be for Outworld, sans the mutiny and the ensuing civil war. And that is because Sonya wears this mantle beautifully, and the rest of Earthrealm, including its other protective factions, are accepting of this. She has managed to bring them all together, to unify the realm, and is more than happy to be its chieftain; they report to her, they check in with her, they follow her orders, and no stone is moved or turned without her say-so.

A footnote worthy of inclusion is the invalidation of the once popular outcry that the roster is too "Special Forces-heavy". Overreaching jokes about MKX being MK: Special Forces 2 are rendered even sillier when one takes in Story Mode. The Special Forces is merely the faction that brought the others together, that leads them in Earthrealm's defense; it does not lay claim to any one of their identities. Takeda proudly touts his title of Shirai-Ryu; Kung Jin colorfully dons his metaphorical Shaolin Monk robe; Sub-Zero journeys on as Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei.

The existence and prominency of the Special Forces serves only to harmonize an otherwise muddled Earthrealm with a cluttered story involving a group of characters and factions who just can't seem to come together toward the imperative task of the realm's defense. Thanks to SF, characters remain loyal to their identities and titles while sharing a much-needed and overdue goal.

Now, where does Cassie Cage fit into this, and what does this all mean for Sonya in MK11? It's too early to tell, and by Boon's own words, anyone contemplating this at the moment is farther ahead than even NRS is when it comes to the question, "Where do we go from here?" They don't know. They've dedicated themselves wholly to this, MKX, and their daunting battle with the blank page is still to come.

One thing has been made certain: Sonya Blade is not going anywhere. Her impressive portrayal in this game, her snug fit into her new role, and the ending of MKX's Story all concretize her newfound position in the franchise, and optimistically allude to her continuous return.

Will she be back next game, in some form? Of course. Is there a possibility that she won't be an initially playable character? Yes, just as there was such a possibility prior MKX and prior any game. And just like before MKX, the possibility of her exclusion as playable does not correlate whatsoever to her daughter's existence. Do not expect Cassie Cage to perform Leg Grabs and shoot Energy Rings; in fact, expect not to see Stryker's return much sooner than you would do the same toward Sonya.

What was once evident is only made clearer in MKX: Cassie Cage is not her replacement. Her gameplay attests to that more than anything. Other than locks of hair, they have NO notable similarities. Cassie is a welcomed afterthought and addition, never was nor will be a replacement. Therefore, don't be surprised to see Sonya and Cassie sharing a select screen again in the near future.

Well said. Don't know why people are saying she is a wasted slot. This is probably the best portrayal of her ever

Both of Sonya's fatalities this time around I respect but maybe she will finally use her kiss of death for one of her brutalities.wink

I just heard Sonya's EX Leg Grab has armor, that's why it doesn't has extra damage.

Also, you can have preassure with it, it could be even more powerfull than the Kartweel in 9.

Interesting. I would've expect an actual slam follow-up... hence the name.

oh my I was comepltey oblvious to armour properties, that is so cool! Just shows you the level of depth the game has, yes so now it basically is a replacement for the Kartwheel!

I finished the Tower and the ending featured artwork, the ending also was a downer as in it wasnt happily ever after.

I have a feeling her classic skin is going to be her MK3 outfit because under her tournament jacket, she's wearing a tank top that is sort of striped black, white and green, the pony tail is also a big give away as its alot like her MK3 pony tail. but I could be mistaken, they might give her short hair and make her wear the green aerobics outfit with white socks.

Either MK3 or 4, her MK1 costume is terrible, also I hope they make her face look like Kerri Hoskins.

The tournement jacket is the one she uses when fighting Quan Chi?

Upon closer inspection her Tournament outfit's jacket is her MK9 P1 top but zipped up with her wearing a tank top underneath it. her pants are camo greenish and she is wearing some killer brown boots (no heels thank god, the heels are apparently popular in edenia) . I prefer it over the "Major Sonya outfit" which looks drab in comparison.

her P1 outfit is my favourite though its just perfect.

I dont think they'll remodel her face, but they might change her hair, if her outfite is anything like the SOnya in my avatar I'll be thrilled!

5 minutes of Sonya in Practice mode, sent to me by residentfan.

They definitely buffed the hell out of that Leg Grab. It's gonna be used a lot more both in combos and as pressure, given how relatively safe it is now. Also surprisingly safer are her Dropkick and Arc Kick. She flips back further and recovers more quickly than when both were missed in MK9.

Also it looks like D4(?) connects to Military Stance moves, which is crazy good. If I'm reading that correctly, you can essentially pop them up and juggle from an almost insta-frame low hit.

Another awesome surprise: Kartwheel is 2 Overhead hits! That, coupled with the low back-flip and grab give Military Stance everything you could need to pressure with mix-ups! Goddammit, she looks better and better the more I see her in action! Anyone who masters her variations is gonna be a nightmare. I'm so up to the challenge, already!

Touching on costumes, I'm disheartened that her Tournament outfit is so similar to Major Blade. It's just a cooler-looking, more stylish version of it. Lacking much in the way of uniqueness, sadly. Johnny's is great, it looks almost exactly like MK9.

I think they could have just zipped up the vest and kept her shirtless. That would be reminiscent of MK9 without the trashiness lol. As it stands right now, it's just too similar to Major Blade.

For her Klassic, I'm betting on an update of MK3, which I'm fine with. The nostalgia will be palpable. I would also take MK4 and MKDA! Would be nice to have Sonya (as Darkmage41 said) let her hair down for one of the costumes.

Finally, I miss the midriff! I don't mean to come off as a weirdo, but I want a version of Sonya showing more skin. She looks great across the board but she's lacking a certain contained sex appeal that she's always had.

Come on, woman, get it together! With all those layers, I'm surprised Erron Black hits on you in his intro with ya.
MK3 over MK1, no doubt!
Oh and it better have a high ponytail.

This please

Yeah, I have that problem with Kitana and Mileena too.

I want Kitana to have her blue mask, but she only has that in her rip-off Jade variation, and the variation of Mileena's I like is the one without her mask at all, and I hate her new mouth so :(

It's funny, I remember stating 4 years ago about Sonya being top tier. People thought she would be no more than mid tier. Yeah Un huh! Now mark my words, history is about to repeat itself. Sonya's covert ops alone will make her top tier( with military stance, and counter parries). I expect demolition to do major damage as well, especially if she can utilize those bombs good or even like Cyrax. So people who think otherwise get ready for a rude awakening.

I'm on the anti-face-paint team as well. Not cool dirtying her up like that. They should've just placed the garrote wire visibly coiled on her waist.

Those people speculating on tier lists are laughable. Another nonsensical, ridiculous thread hijacked by even more ridiculous, nonsensical people who want to pretend their favorite character is the most powerful (in a game they haven't played yet) while trying to downplay the ones they're embittered toward. Such a large fraction of MKO borders on stupidity... it's disheartening.

Been away the game for sometime, MKX has become so addictive that you itch for it when you're not playing it loL! I really think its going to get great reviews better than MK9, also to put things in perspective I was not an Injustice fan, so MKX doesnt feel anything like injustice, there are similarities here and there but overall they're very different.

Anyways

I checked out the practice video and the D+4 to military stance is new to me! and certainly makes her military stance more useful, while playing I manged to jump Kick followed by a Drop kick *thats two guaranteed hits) and then a D+4 connects after the drop kick, ( low third hit) so I;m wondering know if I can fit in the military stance after the third hit for a Kartwheel and then Juggle (if that works out then we've got a guaranteed 12+ hit combo!) .

Still cant makeout any difference with her Ex Leg grab ( I tried it on block and I tired while the opponent is attacking me) and didn't notice anything different. sorry I;m not really savvy when it comes to these things. I'm hoping the release date patch will add something here.

Covert ups is hardcore Sonya Blade.
Demolition is tricky, fun and games, very different play style more accessible for beginners.
Special Forces ( Still havent made much progress but I think this variation has an exclusive brutality, not 100% sure though)

As for the face paint, I'm a fan, it makes her look tougher without making her feel less feminine, It is true that her tournament outfit is similar to major blade but Its her only outfit (so far) that is green(ish), and green is classic Sonya so its become very popular with me, I'd Say General Sonya is her best outfit followed by Tournament Sonya the green trumps any misgivings.

As for her prefight interactions, I love the Banter between her and Kano, there is history there, Kano even drops his "allo Baby, did you miss me" line from the movie! I might have misheard but he even mentions that she;s one of his favorite Blades, there are atleast five different prefight intros. on the other hand there is just one post fight concluder, which gets tiring really quickly . She tells Rayden that she''lk shove her boots up his "a$$".

The Krypt has been pretty barren on the Sonya front so far, the early sections , are all Kitana, Mileena Cassie, Ferra torr.

As for the rest of the characters, I;m digging most of them, NRS have gone out of their way to make the newbies user friendly, Cassie, Dvorah, Takeda, Jin, all stand out immediately, Jaquie actually I'm big fan off, unlike Cassie her moves are mostly unique and she takes some skill to play with also her shotgun is cool.

I'm not digging Ferra Torr and Kotal Khan.

That's good to hear! I have occasionally feared that spoiling a large part of Story Mode and some Arcade endings would rob me in the overall experience, but this remark of yours makes me feel a lot better about that! It seems the game as a whole is very immersive, specific content aside.

It looks like it's really just the armor property :-/

They've made the actual raw move so much more useful this time, though, that I really can't bring myself to complain about it as is haha. In my olden wish-list I hoped for it to pop-up on EX but what they've done with the front flip into quick duck on block is more fun.

I'm surprised Demolition feels beginner-friendly! Have you been able to pretty easily set up traps? I was ready to have to work my ass off figuring these out haha.

As for Special Forces; yes, out of all of these, it doesn't surprise that it's the most foreign-feeling one. Sonya players have been used to rush-down and pressure, it'll be jarring learning a zoning Sonya with projectile traps. But I'm still pretty happy overall with the way her variations cover three such distinct play styles. Just like Kano. You can play Sonya from all three distances, and offensively/mid-range-technical/defensive-zoner.

Hahahaha this bit here has really made my night! Are you serious? Kano actually has his line from the movie as an intro? I'm gonna fan-girl all over it when I hear it... I hope there's no one around at the time to witness me fanning myself and giggling like a schoolgirl. That's fucking awesome, man. Wow.

The "one of my favorite Blades" line is also pretty damn clever. I just KNEW there was some really juicy dialogue between them that we didn't get to see in the stream. The one from then was pretty weak, but these sound amazing! Too bad she doesn't have such good ones with Johnny. I've seen 4 or 5 between the two of them where it's basically her insulting whatever funny thing he said before her lol

I've seen a couple in-fight character-specific dialogue from her as well in some videos. She tells Scorpion, "I'm gonna choke you with that chain", and while combo-ing Jax, saying "Come on, Jax! Stop it!"

Yeah, they've definitely tried hard with the newbies. Good to hear their gameplay reflects that in your experience. I'm looking forward to trying out Cassie. Was excited for D'Vorah, too, but Story Mode really turned me off to her lol And this may sound weird, but Jacquie's voice and intros are really bugging me haha... I was pleasantly surprised by her gameplay in the stream, though. More so than I was with Kung Jin.

Takeda still feels, to me, as gimmicky as Scorpion. Not a fan of the kid.

Thanks for the update! Looking forward to FINALLY trying her out and helping you locate her Krypt stuff (especially Brutalities, I'm itching for those) on Monday!!!
Not sure why people were mad about Sonya and Jax being in the game when they had some of the best parts.

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
Both of them gave sweet justice to Quan Chi. Sonya stomping on his balls was a great scene. Didn't even know Quan Chi had any. That's not a knock against him, It's just that he's originally an Oni. Sonya also has some of the best lines. My only problem was that she kinda jobbed in Chapter 1 (Happens to everyone who's not the playable character in a chapter, I know) and the fact that she didn't kill Kano. I know he'd be back eventually, but she and Johnny should've have done it. It's not like they're monks or superheroes and he threatened their child.

They better deal with it, both Sonya and Jax will be back in the next one anyway.

I was also hoping she would finish him for good this time, he would be back anyway but I wanted to see her kill him since MK3

She has a leg toss one from the get go. Kinda like her old leg split fatality. I've unlocked another. Press FWD and BK and she feint kicks them. It turns into a brutality with the right combination and she kicks their head clean off. It's beautiful!

That sounds nice.
Hoe many does she have ? 5 or something ?

That one with the xray with the garrote wire.
The one what looks like a leg split.
And the kicking the head off.

So two more to go ?
