Kitana has always been a favourite of mine, but I fell in love with Rain the moment he made his debut. What's not to love about a weather controlling hydrokinetic ninja who's a treacherous bastard of a demi-god?
They've only made him better and better as years have gone on. It's a shame he was excluded from the main story in MK9.

I love Kitana, she is awesome, has some awesome gameplay, has some awesome outfits (though I would have preferred a more assassin-inspired outfit than this princess-inspired outfit she got in the newest game) and her storyline is one of the best in the game... but in the recent games, she's been portrayed as this damsel-in-distress and lost that girl-power she had in the old timeline. I still think her best and strongest appearance was her maskless MKDA-MKA outfit and I simply loved the hair of that one. Her hair in the new MK just looks aweful!
Rain has continued to grow, though only made a few game appearances. His latest appearance is easily his best one with some awesome gameplay, a beautiful outift (though I would have preferred a less palette-swap inspired one) and his storyline has finally been established. I love that he is this arrogant asshole who really thinks he is entitled to rule, because of his divine heritage as a demigod. He is easily one of my favourite characters along with Jade.
Sorry Kitana, but this vote goes to Rain.

Rain. Kitana became too much damsel in distress in recent games to my liking.

Kitana has the most unique weapon in MK, but I feel like her fighting with a pair of war fans should be more elegant like the weapon was intended for, but its MK i doubt anyone really cares. I also think their a bit too big for her (the war fans, and perhaps maybe something else...0_o) but again its MK. Because of Kitana, I really got into creating a pair for myself (the war fans people...although...o_0) I really do love that weapon, its really a beautifully unique weapon.

It's actually quite interesting that you would say this, as I've always thought her fans were too small.
In addition to her elegance, Kitana always carried a bit of mystery to her. No matter how much we know about her, there's always something we don't. I always felt her weapon should reflect that.
In that sense, I feel when closed, her fans should resemble long swords, and the majority of her weapon fighting should follow that. This way, when she does open her fans, they appear huge and beautiful like an eagle's wings, and the rarity also makes the sight of her fans opened much more more special and valuable.

Rain because of package and ass and being the purple ninja.
Kitana. The most beautiful Kitana ever was Talisa Soto in the first movie. That very first scene where it shows her sitting under the umbrella in a black dress with her hair loose and she gives "the look" to Liu Kang. No words needed, just "the look", my oh my. Mysterious and beautiful with a touch of exotic = me forever in love.
The sound and blood effect when she hits you with a projectile in MK2 alone is more badass than anything Rain ever delivered. Nothing against him though, he's fine.
I agree though, her MK2011 alternate costume is hideous.

No thought to it, Kitana; she's the best MK female and always will be!!!
Yet I hate to turn my back to Rain so early, dang he's also a great character; I'd take Rain over Sub Zero/Scorpion anyday, those 2 characters are starting to seriously bore me to death, they r n need of some new tricks or may as well take a vacation from the next game.

Not exactly big, but I'm sure this is the scene you are referring to.
Rain.
Kitana was good in the past, but in the last few games she really lost her "cool" and become a standard princess. MK9 ruined the whole Edenian arc, including Kitana role in it, by turning her into prisoner who needed to be saved. Her costumes were bad (though I liked her alternate a bit), though her gameplay was easily one of the best in the game.
Rain, on the other hand, went through quite a development that established him as something much more than throwaway joke. Unlike Kitana in the current generation, he has style and royal flare about him. Also his powers have interesting portrayal, and there is more room for improvisation and improvement. His gameplay was one of the most spectacular in MK9.
While I believe Kitana has potential and could be improved, given recent direction that NRS took with her I doubt, that she will step over the role of "distressed princess". Rain on the other hand, have tonnes of directions to go - as a possible Edenian ruler or mortal enemy (or traitorous ally) of Outworld and Earthrealm. There is just so much potential about him.

Rain. Kitana has been totally dull since Deadly Alliance, whilst he's gone miles ahead. I prefer his Armageddon design, but his move set in MK9 is great (Not that I'm any good with him).
I'd like to see them take him much farther away from the palette swap look. It's almost nonsensical at this point. Bring back the cape and ponytail, make him look like a regal badass rather than keeping under the restrictions of 17 year old hardware limitations.
His story is pretty interesting, lots of potential with ties to other characters. Some sort of alliance with Tanya seems to make sense, but no romance please. It'd be funnier if they hated each other or something. Wacky villain duo getting into all sorts of shenanigans. In any case, it'll be interesting to see what they do with him if he returns in the next game. Which he should.

In fairness to him, Rain's holding his own really well in this vote considering he's up against a seriously memorable character. Not too bad considering prior to his DLC release a lot of fans were still happy to totally piss all over him and call him a joke. Go Rain!! :D
I would have felt guilty if I didn't vote for him. In terms of progression, he's come along leaps and bounds within the space of 2 games, and arguably his character has evolved more within 2 than Kitana has within 4 (counting her cameo in Deadly Alliance, MK:Unchained, Armageddon and MK9) Edit: actually, Rain's Vignette got me thinking. It mentions he was an orphan during Kahn's invasion of Edenia by the Edenian Resistance and trained by them up until his betrayal. His in-game bio kinda confirms this too. Would Kitana not be aware of the Edenian Resistance's existance when Rain joined his army if it was the case they were formed after Kahn conquered the realm? Or would that mean Rain is thousands of years older than Kitana, and had joined Kahn's ranks when she was a child? I'm wondering how come she never questioned the Edenian Resistance, especially since in the Story Mode she acknowledges the fact Sindel, the queen of that realm, had died. Or is it just the case Rain is a lot older than her?
