"Inconsistency"? "Random change"? "Ruining what a character is supposed to be"? This chick has NEVER dressed professionally. I daresay the same select people have been complaining about Sonya's sensuality since she showed us her stomach. "Omigod, belly! Sideboob! Thong! No Bra " and now "ZOMG High Heels no undershirt!" It's fine if you think Sonya's current outfit doesn't fit her character (which, even as a lover of the outfit, I agree with)... but don't go around saying "OMG THEY RUINED WHO SHE IS/IS SUPPOSED TO BE!" She has ALWAYS dressed provocatively whether or not she was wearing heels, with military accentuations thrown in for good measure. And while she was dressed like that, she acted with the same consistent personality through and through. So actually, this just so happens to be the very same fucking Sonya you've been seeing for more than a decade. Dressed sensually, some military aspects, and undoubtedly acting like good ol' Sonya in-game.
Oh yeah, cuz if we like the outfit and disagree with you, we're automatically horny retards. Your logic is enviable. Someone get me porn and bad gameplay!!!!
Thanks, Hoppy. I'll just add-on with a:
Uh, no, not really. You're acting like the 80% guy a few pages back. Just because the same people keep posting over and over with different renditions of their opinions tailored to whatever specifics are being discussed doesn't turn a few into a crowd of protesters. And even IF it did, pretty arrogant to think that MKO consists of every MK fan worldwide, and every as-of-yet-non-fan who will get the game. I also daresay if you were to do a poll worldwide of whether or not hardcore and casual fans like the new Sonya, most would love it, either because as long as the characters look cool it doesn't matter what they're wearing, or because they know personality will come out in story mode, not out of Sonya's thong.
Seriously, some people just need to stop with the fucking exaggerations. It's not hard to have a discussion that speaks to your sensible credibility, so give it a shot instead of assuming "most of the world agrees with me" or "if you don't like what I like your penis is erect and you're in a short bus as we speak".

Can we agree to disagree? Some like her new outfit, some don't. Some think the women of MK are sluts, others doesn't.
It's alright to discuss these things, that's what these forums are for, but we aren't really getting anywhere with this.

Alts don't count, also. They're alts for a reason.

Not to bring all this up again.... but Ada and Sheva have both worn inappropriate outfits to combat. Sheva's primary outfit's shirt... the purple singlet thing... That's as "inappropriate" for a military chick as any Sonya shirt I've seen... (though she does have smaller boobage than Sonya), especially when she's standing next to her allies who are in full gear.
We've got to just accept that they're trying to cram three games of outfits into one. Sonya would've been wearing a full uniform when she got to Shang's island. She easily could've stripped down to just the vest and pants to look like this.... (and who knows. Maybe Shang has a high heel fetish ), but they're not going to bother animating said scene, and the before and after outfit.
In MK2, she may well have been wearing a more provocative version of what she was already wearing, forced into it by Shang (a la Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi, minus the bikini) while she was held captive.
In MK3 she may well have been at a fancy dress nightclub party They can't make it perfect for all three parts to the story, and they seem unwilling to make ANY of the characters 100% realistic...
Would Johnny Cage have been shirtless when he got on the boat to Shang's Island? Or when he was walking through the wastelands of Outworld? etc etc
All I see here is proof that Sonya's been one of the better accepted characters in this new MK and that she's by far the most controversial of the whole revealed cast. Big. Fat. Plus.
1) The majority agree that Sonya looks absolutely fantastic, but, they also agree she could do better with a shirt under the vest (I'm in there supporting those views + the heels argument). Bottom line: this group is mostly pleased and positive about MK2011 Sonya.
2) A decent group agree she looks great but that the outfit (overall) is totally unfitting for her because of the lack of the shirt + heels (some in this group have gone as far as calling her new look slutty).
3) Another decent but smaller group agree that she looks great just the way she is. Period.
4) And the minority is the group that totally and simply despise the entire costume (and/or Sonya) for their own very good ("out-of-character") or bad (biased/exaggerations) reasons.
The way I see it, Sonya's reveal was a total and complete success.
Almost 600 posts in this thread + other extra threads about her in MKO (and this is not even counting the overwhelming positive response she's received in tons of other boards and forums).
There's been too many replies to get into them right now, but, I'll definitely address some of those posts later on after I attack my meal.
So, for now: Happy Thanksgiving MKO, and welcome back you glorious blond babe: Miss Sonya Blade.

Johnny was wearing a suit and tie when he boarded the boat. He had luggage because he knew he was going to a martial arts tournament to which he had been invited.
Sonya got captured in the middle of a mission.

Yes, and like I said, could easily have stripped down to what she is wearing now (minus the high heels, which yes I'm bothered by).
If Johnny can rock up in a suit and be wearing what he's wearing now, why can't Sonya have rocked up in a more "full" outfit and stripped down for her fights?
Onto the heelz in general.... I was going to make a separate thread about this but I think that'd be overkill
Has anyone else noticed that in the MKDA-MKA era, and now as well.... all the girls overall wear the same kind of shoe? Outside of design, height, colour or whatever... they usually all have the same height and basic shape and same heel...
In MK9, the three girls have the exact same kind of stiletto point.... so I'm thinking maybe it's a case of "we need to put all girls in this kidn of shoe so they're the same size and height for fatalities and hit detection blah blah", on top of the "let's make 'em sexy" thing. Maybe they're just lazy and use the same base for shoes -_-

Sure, I've suggested the same thing myself...I just don't think an undershirt would've been hindering her ability to fight comfortably and needed to be stripped off though.
I mean, I'm not one of the ones who thinks this is a bad costume. A white t-shirt under the vest, ditch the crazy-long heels (which I agree are probably only there to make her as tall as the other characters for hit detection purposes, which just kinda makes me disappointed in the programming), and I would've put her in a headband or hat because she always wears one and it's conspicuous by its absence...but these are all kinda nitpicks honestly, and other than that, I think it's almost perfect.
It really looks like a modern take on her MK1 duds, the placement of the badge on green vest particularly look a lot like the green shirt with an SF logo on it that she wears in the MK1 comic. I like that. And I did point out that I was pleased the badge itself is an accurate recreation of an MKA Konquest relic. One of the few instances I've seen so far of them using continuity properly in the game's designs, much like the awesome Lin Kuei logos on Subbie's chest. This is what I want and expect from costume designs. The canon should be the artists' friend, not something to avoid and violate like they've done on a couple other characters. I can find nothing positive to say about the current Shao Kahn design, for instance.

Just to get me back up to speed. RazorsEdge is laying it on the line for his childhood dreams and the usual masturbatory sole ownership of the characters and franchise, and queve is convinced Sonya has been statistically overwhelmingly well received, bold bold, edit edit.

Undershirt would be better aesthetically (though I'm not especially bothered), if only to break up the one tone colour that the rest of the outfit is.
And I would love an MK4 hat.... I miss that outfit :(

Yep, this was something I wanted to comment on as well. I accept that there are people with different views from my own, and I respect their opinions just as I hope/expect them to respect my views on matters. Just because our views differ, does not make my voice any less important than yours. I hope we're all mature enough here and refrain from insulting people just because we don't see eye to eye.
And also, while it may be true that most people in this topic prefer to see a somewhat altered design, keep in mind that there's a big group out there that just keeps silent. So please, don't go assuming that most people think like you, because you could be surprised.

I agree with you Crow in that MOST of the quoted people were just making a good point using "ineloquent" language. I'm not arguing that the character design is ill suited to Sonya. It would be fine if they added some of things Queve mentioned but as it is it IS too revealing for the "typical" Sonya even by MK team standards, lol. I just get extremely annoyed by the equation of revealing attire with the inference that she must be a woman with loose moral standards, lol. I think people should THINK a little before they post. I mean we all write some badly worded reactionary posts now and then but come on...
And I ABSOLUTELY agree that costumes for characters SHOULD be symbolic in a way giving you some instant statement of who they are and what they are about. This is not present in most if any of the MK cast. I like symbolism in costumes while some people absolutely do not. I for example LIKE Scorpion's costume actually having reminiscent symbols and characteristics of skeletons and actual scorpions here and there. Most people think it's too cluttered. Many people think his swords make him look more "in character", I think they are needless and don't suit him and wish they would focus more on his hellfire talents and his iconic rope dart as his weapon. These are the things that I would view as part of good symbolic character design. I have no problem with Kitana and Mileena's outfits because they fit what I see as "within the probable realm" of their character concepts as Edenian/Outworlder Kunoichi variants but they could still use some improvements and a bit more symbolic/personality touches. Sonya looks great just not enough like Sonya so she needs some glaring touch ups.
Take my statements for what you will.

Sonya is the center of this debate. "Not befitting her character, not how special forces should dress, headband, heels, heels, heels, heels, boobies". The discussion of the overall accentuating of female characters' sexuality is just a few spots down on a thread that hasn't been locked for that exact reason.

Show me even one person who wants a Call of Duty-ish costume.
Also, MKO is special in that there's always good debate here. I think we've always been unique in that regard. Our userbase is larger than most and as largely diverse, so it makes for good amounts of discussion.
Sometimes it is strange which threads get huge, but I wouldn't have it any other way really. The fact this topic is so popular reflects well on the website. A forum full of people just praising the game is boring. Forums were created so people could actually have discussion, and what sort of interesting discussion could happen from people agreeing and falling to their knees in unanimous praise for every bit of info released? Is that really what you want?

It would be a cool alternate outfit to have her all geared up like that. However, due to all the magic that people can do in MK, then I think being so heavily geared would be ineffective. It would only slow her down. That's why they don't send tanks into Outworld through a portal, magic would easily overcome it.

Well I don't mean alternates really. I agree it could be a fun little alt costume to see, but I was replying more to the implication that once again people want 0% of her skin visible, which I don't believe anyone is seriously calling for.
