Use your sense of logic. Li Mei's alt outfit in MKDA looks like something Mileena would wear. Put a mask on it and voila, you got Mileena. They share a purple colour scheme, both have black hair and both uses sais.

Why make a totally new character that has so much in common with a former character design wise, if not because she was supposed to be Mileena in the first place? If the MK team really made Li Mei from scratch, they did a real bad job in doing so. Her MKDA appearance was less than original... I mean, copying from one of their own designs? I just don't buy it.

Me "attacking" a character because of their staleness has nothing to do with any of the users on this forum. Me stating an opinion about a character is because the character is in focus, not any user.
As for the fact part, I actually questioned it myself after reading through some posts on here, so did some digging and you're right, there's no official confirmation about Li Mei was intended to be Mileena.
My bad. I admit, I was wrong in calling it a fact.
That said, as I stated above, the similarities in design are rather questionable.
I still don't get why you and others think I am shooting down Li Mei for comparing her to Mileena.

Damn I enjoyed mkda and mkd's stories. What the hell is with the universe. We had a great story at the time, and a mediocre fighting game. Now we have a great fighting game and a mediocre story. Maybe mkx is where it will all align.

I liked Li Mei's moveset, but felt Ashrah was a better character.

I was in love with Li Mei's fighting styles and move set.

Except Li Mei's alt costume was the single most revealing outfit in the series at the time, and Mileena/Kitana/Jade had wore nothing but leotards up to that date, so this "her costumes screamed Mileena" argument is BS. If anything, Mileena's skimpy style was inspired by Li Mei.

Hell, even Kitana was wearing purple in her alt costume, and was a leotard. Was Kitana originally intended to be Mileena in DA too?

And they have nothing in common when it comes to special moves. Usually, when fighting game introduces clone character, they at least have something in common, with original. In case of Li Mei it's her weapon and color scheme. And nothing else.
Besides, argument about color scheme could be easily refuted. Li Mei was created more as a generic asian fighter, with asian theme going on. Hence the colours. Her name is "plum", so it is possible, that her outfit was inspired by colour of the berry.

Bottom line: I need an official source, saying that Li Mei was restyled Mileena. Until then it is nothing, but specualtion. And nothing else, no matter what kind of logic you apply.

As for Ashrah making it in before Lei Mei, is slim. Lei Mei was in Deadly Alliance and Deception as Ashy only debuted in MKD.

It came across that way 'cause you stated you didn't get how people like Li Mei before you posted that part about Mileena. I get now that you don't like her because she's too similar to Mileena to you, but heck, Mortal Kombat started with rainbow ninjas and female 'ninjas'. The only thing that felt familiar with her and Mileena were her sais, other than that she's like a whole different character.

This was the toughest one for me yet because I love both and want to see the, in MKX! Went for Li Mei in the end.

I believe that when they made Li Mei's alt outfit, it was supposed to be Mileena's main outfit at the time they created it. This is just theorycrafting though.

As for Kitana's purple outfit, no, I don't believe she was supposed to be Mileena, but more a way to make Kitana have a more regal look. That outfit is still my favourite for Kitana to date.



Tanya doesn't have any moves that Kitana has, yet she was indeed intended to be Kitana at first in MK4, so that arguement is refuted.
As for Li Mei's name meaning "plum" to fit her colour scheme, that sounds more like something that was tagged on her character AFTER they decided to make her into a new character instead of Mileena.
