It is clear that you are not a Sub Zero fan and are not acknowledging the fact that he becomes an Ice God in his ending. Yes, a God. Though Scorpion is a powerful warrior, he could no way bring down a God.
Anyway, I still am a little bugged by how they did this to the storyline. They were building up to so much, then they just ruined it all. Why? Because they were too lazy to take a few hours and think of good storylines for all characters. It is so pointless that they ruined the storyline like this.

It's good to see a majority of us agree on the matter. I was told by a friend that we should band together and send leeter to Midway, but such a thing would do any good. It's too late now for improvements, but perhaps it could bring a little hope for MK8.

I don't know, Shinomune. Maybe it could help a little. And did he really say that? If that is the case then perhaps somethign should be done. We can't allow for this kind of nonsense anymore. The story has suffered tragically.

And if this Argus guy is the protector of Edenia, why the hell hasn't done anything since, I don't know, Shao Kahn ruled with a tyrannical fist for almost 10,000 years? *sigh*

All of that bugs me. And I didn't realise Argus was supposed to be Edenia's protector. He's a joke! That's just poor storytelling right there for you.

Exactly, Matt. I was pretty much basing my opinion off of IceMan in the X-Men. He's like a super power and he's not even a god. Sub-Zero with the same abilities and god like power would pretty much be even stronger. Scorpion cannot live or match up to that. My like or dislike of him in that matter is pretty much irrelevant.

Two points:
-I wonder what was the question? Was it something along the lines of "Why is the storyline so poor?"
-A reply from an employee basically saying "Make suggestions to the management [not me even though I'm credited as story writer]" stinks of internal politics. I wonder if there's going to be any changes in the MK cretive team...?

Gods can be defeated in mortal kombat, the elder Sub-Zero has finished four in mythologies. Being a god grants them a supreme amount of
power, but they are not unstoppable.
If it is one thing that I always enjoyed about Mortal Kombat, it was the storyline. I was always anxious before a new Mortal Kombat game, because I knew not only would new characters be introduced but we will find out what happened during the previous game. MK Armageddon, doesn't give us anything new in terms of story.
I honestly believe that the storyline is what separated Mortal Kombat from other fighting games, now that they are all pushing the envelope in terms of violence and gore. With the storyline that is in place now, Mortal Kombat has lost its flavor. The game is still entertaining but it is more entertaining if the story not only makes sense but moves forward, not in circles.
Hopefully, Armageddon has a more intriguing final as the endings for the characters really leave much to be desired. I especially hated Smoke's ending. When I beat Blaze, I was anxious to see what his possible future would be, and to my complete surprise, I turned off the game and played MVP Baseball 2005.

Why the fuck would Raiden seriously team up with Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Shao Kahn, and Onaga??? Because they'll "ensure that Earthrealm is left alone" after they win? What the fuck? Raiden of ALL PEOPLE should know these guys are trecherous bastards (and they even talk about that very thing) and yet he believes they'll keep their word when Earthrealm is so important? God fucking damn, Raiden... They've turned you from a cool character in to a "dark and badass" dumbfuck. Oh well, at least there's always Fujin.

I just want to vioce my concern at the stories. Something went horribly horribly wrong. even the fighting engine is more messed up then MKD.

Argus didn't defend Edenia because Kahn beat them in MK fair and square. Those are the rules. We beat you, we can conquer you. Argus may have helped to try and win the MK tournament with the warriors, but Kahn and Tsung have already proven they can defeat gods. A god can't compete unless he's in mortal form.

I was just basing my opinion on most endings. That power Blaze is giving people is a lot - enough to conquer all realms. If he gives that amount of power to Subby, then he would be heaps more powerful then Scorpion. I mean Scorpion only just defeated Subby before, so now with Sub Zero having the Medallion AND this new God power, Scorpion would no doubt lose.
Meh... that is just my opinion, I didnt mean to offend or anything.

Theres only TWO sources to blame, either Ed Boon or Midway Producer "Forgot his name"
Most of all i blame the mini game Motor Kombat.
I rather have biographies on all the characters and how some of them came back, from the dead.
I would rather have longer Konquest mode that bridges Deceptions storyline to Armageddons.
I just hope that Midway allows Jon Vogal to excute these things on the MKA Page.
I do agree about the ending being bad!
At least Reptiles didn't suck lol

I would hope that the next game would be made by someone who gave a damn about the series, but I'm pretty sure that this one will make enough money that no one will notice a bunch of nerds whining about the story.
Maybe at least the next game will have a decent fighting engine.

After deciding to spoil myself with "endings" and "bios" posted on the 'net, and reading that letter supposedly written by John Vogel, I have to say that I am disappointed with the way the storyline turned out. I've always considered the stories to be the best aspect of the MK series (it definitely wasn't the fighting
), and since the stories have been sacrificed, I sure hope that the gameplay kicks a lot of ass when I play it, instead of being ass. Seriously, they invest resources in one thing or the other, what happened to making a good game in all directions? Did they have to waste their time and resources making Motor Kombat when storylines and Khameleon could've been there instead? Even Reptile's ending is a piss-off...
And since I brought up gameplay, apparently, Shao Kahn and Motaro can be thrown, but the Shokans, Onaga, and Blaze cannot. What's the deal there? In their storylines, these were powerful creatures, they should at least be immune to throws and take less damage from projectiles (considering Motaro's a Minotaur now, I wouldn't expect him to be able to reflect the attacks). Also, Shao Kahn's just as bad in Armageddon as he was in MK:D, they didn't even try to make him stronger! Again, another story piece erased.
John Vogel, Ed Boon, anyone else on the MK Team, if you need any help tying up stories for everyone in MK, I gladly volunteer to do it, even for free.*
*Hey, can't say I didn't try.

I already know about that, man and it sucks. See, Raiden wouldn't be that stupid. Given the rest of the story though, you can just pretty much ignore because you can see it's not all thoughtfully written. All of those bad guys wouldn't even team up with one another for goodness sake. they all hate each other or want revenge on one or more of the others.

I agree with you said in the quote. I volunteer also.
And hopefully this petition to get bios put online will work. If it does, let us hope the bios and story are actually handled in a good way. I'd hate for it all to be for nothing.

I definitely agree with the general opinion here. As ridiculously funny as the endings are (
To me, the stories so far go like this:
MK1 - Not very in-depth, but it certainly opened the doors for the awesome storylines to come. Still pretty good, though.
MK2 - Gave the characters more depth, introduced the definitive boss of Mortal Kombat, introduced us to Outworld, and brought in some classic new characters.
MK3 - Probably my least favourite of the originals, but by no means is it crap. It introduced the cyborgs, Kabal (Who I liked until MK:D.), revealed Kitana's background, and so on.
MK4 - Tied into Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero, which revealed quite a bit about pre-MK1 history, this game brought my favourite villain to the forefront (Quan Chi.), gave more insight into the history of the Elder Gods. I didn't enjoy the gameplay much, but the story was wicked.
MK:DA - My favourite. I enjoyed the new gameplay (With the fighting styles and such.), and the story became deeper than ever. It had a great atmosphere - it was like a updated version of MK1 and 2 mixed together. The new characters were great (In my opinion, though I know many disagree.), and I really enjoyed the route the plot was taking.
MK:D - A great continuation of MK:DA's plot, though I felt that the atmosphere of it was lacking (It didn't feel as MK-ish to me.). My only disappointment was Kabal being a dumbass and reforming the Black Dragon. Once again, the new characters were great (Hotaru and Ashrah being my favourites. Great stories, fun to play as.), and the story kept chugging along.
And now, we're here. And I'm disappointed. MK: Armageddon promised to do the plot justice, and a lot of the characters are lucky to get more than one or two sentences explaining their ending - and the endings don't even make sense, given the complete lack of bios and information on these characters. Okay, we know what Meat is (Kind of.), but still, why the hell is he there? Besides the obvious reason. What about Chameleon? Is he supposed to be Saurian or something? What's his personality?
They've been building this up for YEARS, as others have mentioned. This story needs serious reconciling. I'm still buying the game - I'm looking forward to the gameplay, Kreate-a-Fighter, concept art - but the story has hit a terrible low.

Finally, a discussion that inspires me to abondon the realm of lurkerdom. I'm normally not all that oppinionated or sociable and just like to follow along but I just can't keep my peace about this.
This game was a total slap in the face, I can't even begin to express my uter loathing of the MK team after this fiasco. And I went into this game fully expecting to be let down... but I wasn't expecting this.
Zero continuation: While DA and MKD weren't anywhere near perfect they still had a fairly solid storyline and the characters actually had SOME sort of purpose no matter how small it was. Hell, even a few of the new characters showed some promise, but did they get anything added to their plotline.... hell no! We got nothing, there was absolutely no point of having the past two games if THIS is what they were leading up to. What Invicible Army? Kamido..what now? They died? "The culmination of all MK storylines" my ass! They promised us everything (that I've personally dreamed of for an MK) and delivered this piece of total shit.
The Writing: When "Napkin Quality" doesn't quite sum up how awful the writing is you know you've messed up big time. Especially since the ending are all of 5-10 senteces long you'd think they could have come up with some higher quality stuff. My 13 year old can and has written better storyline then this. What with gems like...
Bottom line is not one damn bit of this game makes any sense. The whole thing is based around the idea of "Let's rush the burning bastard on top of the pyramid, cool shit might happen if we kill him!" It really crushes not only this game, but any anticipation I had for the next one. Boon has never lied this baddly, or in such a harmful way to my love of the MK world. It's just plain wrong.
Fatalities: I just don't understand how people can be happy with this system. It damn near completely strips away what was left of each characters originality after they were ransacked by the storyline. I'm sorry but 62 characters who all do the same boring shit over and over again only to reach their god awful endings takes the replay value of this game down to zero. And on top of that Jade our Tanya are just as sexy after I rip their brains, ribs, and leg bones out as they were before, it's just stupid. And what's the motivation after you're sick of seeing the same boring finishers for the hundreth time... coins? Their damn near worthless if you complete Konquest with all the artifacts or whatever their called. In my oppinion, KAFatality was yet another excuse to cheap out while claiming their giving us what we wanted.
Motor Kombat: What the hell? I guess it coulda been a kinda fun way to chill out and relax from Arcade and Konquest if they didn't do such a shitty job... but who wanted this crap anyway? They jipped us on everything that mattered and gave us a boring as hell Mario Kart knockoff... and I loved all the Mario Karts and this just sucked. If they'd put more into it then maybe but this still shouldn't exist in an MK game.
Air Combat: Is this a joke? They built this up so much but everybody does the exact same thing! and it's not even good for damage either, you can do more by waiting for them to drop and hiting them with a follow up combo. Waste of time in my oppinion.
The Exuses: "We ran out of time..." They had better not try and throw this at us if there's another fight night because that's just a shitfaced lie. I swear 70% was ported from DA, MKD, and SM. Can they honestly tell us it took them two years of hard work to make this game after TAKING OUT a fighting style, removing any semblence of quality fatalities, and shilling out this garbage storyline? I call major bullshit on that.
Something I've noticed while marathoning my way through Arcade mode: Short of their special moves damn near every character is almost the same as all the characters in their "Type". Try printing out ten characters Move Lists and looking at them side by side.... look familiar? A slightly (insignifcantly) varying ground combo which rarely lands more then four hits, the EXACT same air combos, and one small style branch combo. What the hell is this? I hear people raving about the improved gameplay but short of the very slight speed/sensitivity boost and the parry, it seems like things took a step backwards.
Closing thoughts: This is just a shell of once great game series that's unfortunately been lost to the capitalist system... such a dissapointment. I don't even want to think of what MK8 is going to be like after this dissaster. Thanks a lot Midway, your money grubbing and lazy ass production has destroyed what could have been one of the greatest games of all time. Such a shame.
Still here? Wow... I'm speechless! thank you so much for taking the time to read through my thoughts and feelings. It's much appreciated.
--Silvi
PS That ???? box better have ONE HELL of secret, otherwise this game'll be collecting a lot of dust in the years to come.
PPS Anyone know where a girl can find some decent MK fanfiction? You know, something beyond the 5 year old level the game displayed. I'm looking for a place to post some of what I've been able to get down when I'm not overun by my newborns. ^_^ I've written what I'm told is a damn fine story involving a relationship between Jade and Tanya which is done very tastefully (I don't write smut) and manages to keep pretty close to the story line (with an interesting and fitting take if I do say so myself). If you know a place please PM me. Thank you so much!

Sektor: Merges with the other cyborgs and becomes some sort of human/machine hybrid god...
Smoke: Turns into a big cloud that absorbs Edenia... what the hell is that?
Reptile: Becomes human (why?) and finds a female Zaterran (too bad he's human now) in the rubble of the crumbled pyramid (why the hell would she possibly be there?)
Sub Zero: Becomes an Ice God so the Elder Gods send their champions to kill him (what, they don't have problems with DAMN NEAR EVERY OTHER CHARACTER BECOMING A GOD AND DESTROYING REALMS?)
Scorpion: Can you say completely inconclusive?
Meat: Becomes a shapeshifter and disappears... (I guess that's what fun characters who work for Shinok do with godlike power...)
Blaze: Armageddon happens (correct me if I'm wrong but if Blaze won then wouldn't all the fighters (including the ones that bring the others back to life) that were causing the imbalance be gone, thus STOPPING Armageddon?)
Darious (I might be wrong here, I can't remember too clearly): Conquers Edenia so the Elder gods send Taven and Daegon to stop him... (wait, so now Konquest mode, which is the ONLY storyline we have to follow for MKA isn't even canon ala Daegon is alive?)
Reiko: Merges with Shao Kahns helmet... (what the hell... just.... what the hell?)
Kitana: Becomes the new Champion and forms all female fighting team... (although I like what this implies ^_~ and I'm all about girl power, that's just plain pathetic, no sense writing there.)
Mokap: Gets ripped apart (which is good) and becomes a constelation... (ugh, did I even need to mention this one?)
Sheeva: Becomes a war goddess... (Knocking off a Hindu [it is Hindu right?] deity now...)
And my all time favorite so far (I still have 15 or so to go)......
Jax: Becomes a cyborg and leader of the Tekunin.... (good lord! I can't even imagine how uterly stupid a person has to be to pull that one out of their ass!) Not to mention the patheticness was enhanced further by the fact that he was in his alt. (no metal arms) when I beat it.
Kano: Is experimented on by the Red Dragon (when the hell did they capture him anyway?) and becomes a black dragon-human hybrid...

Just bought the game and played it over the weekend, and after reading this thread earlier, I guess I too have to agree that the storyline is more of a joke then anything. For instance -
Kano becomes a big black dragon!
Jax becomes a cyborg!!
What the heck!? And it's disappointing to see that somehow nearly every ending starts with "The power of Blaze.....". It would seem that everyone became a God or some sort by defeating Blaze.
Also, the main theme about Armageddon was "finality", which is safe to say something we didn't get. If it was finality, then all (yes, ALL) the endings should tally and make sense. For instance, if in Sonya's ending she kills Kano, then in Kano's ending, he dies at the hands of Sonya (although in this caes, the term "if looks could kill" was taken a little too seriously in Sonya's ending).
With that, I think it's safe to say that with endings like these, we should not rule out the possibility that everyone will return in some way or another in future Mortal Kombat games. I mean, hardly anyone really died.

I just beat the game as Kung Lao and it mentions character development that was only part of the story in Shaolin Monks.
Like it or not that would clearly imply that game is canon. Sucks but I knew that'd happen. Or at least them taking random bits and pieces from it they like and making it so.

I say that all your complaints and disappointments are a result of that "One Mortal Kombat Game A Year" plan that they announced sometime during the release of Deception. They said they would release a new MK game every year and that is where the problem of time restraint is.

Liu Kang and Kung Lao always had somewhat of a rivalry in MK2 - in the comic, Kung Lao is a bit bitter towards Liu Kang for leaving. So I'm sure the slight resentment for him was there in both versions of the MK2 storyline.

Perhaps, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't need a whole year to write the character endings. I'm sure a week would be more then enough for 60 plus single paragraph stories. And without bios, they would have had more time!
Furthermore, we've seen better endings from fans in the forums here.
My only complaint is that even if the stories were silly, the least they could have done was tally them (like if Kano dies in Sonya's ending, he should die in his ending too).

tgrant hit the nail on the fucking head. I can forgive the cut and paste renders, fighting styles, special moves, gameplay, and costumes. I can forgive that. But the Mortal Kombat plot has been the one thing that has captivated me since I saw the first the movie and engulphed myself into the mythos in FIRST GRADE.
The MK plot has always fascinated me and I grew up with it. And Armageddon gives that piece of my adolescence a wound and pours salt in it. A better title would be Mortal Kombat: The Most Hyped Cliffhanger of Epical Proportions.
I've actually started to write bios for every single character, including Khameleon, to fill in the plothole (or plotabyss rather) between Deception and Armageddon. I'm essentially doing the job the MK team should have done, and it would have taken them less than a week. Hell I started just today and I'm already done Ashrah through Reptile. Why am I doing this? For my own damn piece of mind. I'm accepting my version as canon unless the MK team decided to send the fans a formal apology and the decent writing we've come to expect. I'm also changing the ending so that when Taven defeats Blaze, everyone dies, including and especially the Midway team.

You honestly think that's what they had in mind when they wrote that in MKA and not the story they had just set up in Shaolin Monks?
The games never made much of a big deal about any rivarly between the two. It was a focal point of SM's story. Now suddenly it's brought up in MKA as if it had always been that way? That isn't a coincidence.
I'm sure it's only the beginning too. I expect it's inevitable that we see more and more bits from SM added to the story. I always figured fans just declaring SM non canon was too good to be true. Way too easy to explain away the contradictions.

How do we go from such a simple story as trying to defeat a shape-shifting sorceror. Then several years later, to trying to prevent a dragon-like mad man from fuesing the realms? How did Midway screw up that story?
Me and my friends were extremely disappointed with this games storyline. As you have pointed out before, none of it makes sense. I have been a fan of the MK story since MK 1! The best story in my opinion was MK:DA and MK:D. I was looking for the surprise element from MK:DA and MK:D in MKA.
There's nothing much I can say that hasn't already been said, but it's not too late for them to post real official thought through profiles on their official site. Or is it? Seeing the MK story deteriorate into this....scum....is more than I can stand.
