I could totally see Superman wearing that if that was his traditional Kryptonian attire. That would make a really cool alt and it would be more MK'ish.

ITT: Babies who didn't get their nap complaining about the graphics
Alright, here's my opinion:
I'm sort of indifferent about the model. Some of it looks great, some of it looks terrible. Ultimately, it balances out to "mediocre". Not bad, not great, but purely run-of-the-mill. I've seen better and I've seen worse.
There is some nice detail in some of the model, from some ripples and even some facial stubble on Superman, but most of the "detail" is nothing more than a quick and easy bump map. The textures are rather dull, and, most disappointingly, he looks very plastic, like an action figure, which is a problem that's bugged me about the past three MK games. The hair, in particular, is very distracting, looking like a highly gelled up, solid clump instead of, well, hair. The eyes look rather dead too in a creepy "Polar Express" kind of way.
Now, I'm not a Superman hater (okay, I am. I'm a passionate Superman hater. I blame Superdickery.com for that), but I am a professional art student studying computer animation and learning the ins and outs of 3D animation, modeling, texturing, rigging, etc. I am GOING to work on video games, and I'm going to be GOOD at it. I have to be in order to stay competative.
From an artistic perspective, the render is lacking. If I were trying to apply for a job, I would not include this render as part of my portfolio. It's not bad at all, by any means, and it would certainly get you a job somewhere (obviously Midway), but I've come to expect higher standards of myself. Personally, I'm not yet on the level of even THIS render, but I have my standard of what I'm shooting towards. Having seen some amazing graphics, renders, and in-game shots in my time as a gamer, artist, and researcher, I've set the graphics bar pretty damn high and would like to think I've developed a very clear understanding of what this generations graphic technology is capable of.
DC fanboyism be damned, this render does not impress me. I don't hate it, but I hardly like it either.

I'm neither blown away or disappointed...the image is ok to me. I'm just excited about the game, in general. And yes, the Leno chin is pretty much the standard Supes look.
To whomever said this Superman model looks nothing like Alex Ross', you couldn't be more wrong. Perhaps you aren't an avid comic reader, but that model exudes Alex Ross. The hair, the eyebrows, the jaw line, the buldging veins. All those thing come together and make that model UNMISTAKABLE Alex Ross. Not only that but Boon DID absolutely say that ALL the DC character were based directly from Alex Ross' paintings. He said they are the darkest and grittiest versions, and he was right. I'll atempt to find that interview and link you to it in this thread.
Also, you said that this isn't Alex Ross' Superman cuz he doesn't look old like Alex Ross painting make him look. Well the reason you think that, again, is cuz you aren't currently a comic reader. And 90+% of all Alex Ross paintings of Superman most people see who don't follow comics are from "Kingdom Come". The reason he looks old in all of those is cuz he IS old in those. Kingdom Kome was set like 50 years in the future. You should see how old Bruce Wayne is in that story. More recently though, Alex Ross did the art on a story set in "current" time, and his Superman looks EXACTLY like this MK vs. DC model. It really is unmistakable.

Actually, it's because Ross has an affinity for the Golden Age, and senior cast of heroes in the DC Universe. He attempts to reflect their world weary character in detail and makes a conceited effort to make them larger than life, whilst still marrying an element of relatable humanity.
Ross' characters are also, quite obviously, defined by a different set of pseudo-realism. He draws these heroes to be the men and women they are, as opposed to the stylized pencils of most contemporary artists. It's there that you'd find "bulging veins" -- not with Ross!
Ross' characters very speicfically wear their clothes like they wear their history and status. They don't have odd looking bulging veins protruding through the suit, musculature isn't on show, and for Superman, Ross typically draws the symbol to be larger (on a more triangular balance) across a defining barrel chest.
This model, as already stated, is quite clearly somewhere between the youthful looks of Brandon Routh (looking again, it's a bit more Reeves in the face), and the JLH model.
If I had to pretend I knew spit about comics and throw artist's names around with vague allusions instead of specific analysis and understanding of comics art, I'd mention Byrne or Perez.
Good thing I didn't do that! It's not unlike recent work by Kubert. You're probably new to working on comics, I guess.

i think they modeled Supes after Brandon Routh from Superman Returns, particularly in the eyes. Also: a good idea for Supes alternate costume would be the black and silver one, that would definately be gritty

If you want to get technical, the face has a bigger chin, more in line with the way John Byrne or Dan Jurgens drew him in the 80's and 90's, but to the trained eye, the slight variations in the S symbol on the chest gives away that the design is mostly based on Christopher Reeve.
I personally don't see much resemblance to the Alex Ross version. But I'm a nitpicky guy when it comes to superheroes.

I could get behind that. Y'know, I hear they're the fiercest killers in the insect kingdom.
One question, though...we talkin' Thanagarian Snare-Beast, or Toyman Robot?

Hey, I happened to like Tim Burton and his "argh! my eyes!" art style. His version of Batman was darker and grittier than anything I've seen of this game so far.
Mild rant, but I just saw a news article touting Gears of War 2 as one of the more violent and controversial upcoming games this year.... which made me only stop and think that, you know, MK used to have that same headline... what happened?
Then I remembered the Superman render.
