Liu Kang is the sub boss, Torr (Shao Kahn) is the boss.
Well Ed said you won't see it coming so it could possibly be a good guy turning bad like maybe a Liu Kang or Raiden. But if this game spans a 25 year period who's to say we don't get more than one big Bad? Shinnok of course needs to be defeated I'm guessing somewhat early in the game due to the Netherrealms eventual take over. Some characters will return from the dead as seen by Sub-Zero returning to his human form. Quan Chi of course will escape death during this time because he is the most manipulative and crafty character who probably has much deeper ulterior motives. Noob Saibot could be a potential candidate as well because we don't quite know what happens to him after being thrown into a soulnado(if scorpion is any example it could make him a lot more powerful).
All I can really say is is that I hope they make the Boss fights much more difficult and interesting. Just making a boss impervious to some of your attacks is not very inspiring gameplay. I definitely want to see a very different and challenging boss fight that has a lot of variation and flash. I want to be amazed by the boss fights. I know this isn't fighting posiedon in God of War but I know the Netherrealm team can figure something out.

My guess is during the heroes journey to stop Shinnok Liu kills Raiden for the death of the heroes in the past believing he will kill these new heroes leading them towards failure. After beating shinnok Liu tries to become the ruler of all the realms since he believes he will become the savior who will be a better protector than raiden ever was only to end up becoming like a dictator of the realms and comes across shujinko trying to find the komidogu's(can't remember how it's spelled) . Liu stops him and decides to recruit him for all his efforts since it was all for nothing deciding he may have skills of use to him.
When the heroes stop liu kang, shujinko thinks he is helping by stopping all the heroes and finds a way to become ultra powerful and badass causing a crazy ultimate battle......or it's just shinnok....maybe Liu....i have no fucking clue.
One thing i do know is this game is going to be absolutely amazing!
What are your crazy story plots?

Time to move on, and yet here you give exactly who was the boss previously.
Not to mention worst boss character ever, poor man's Shang Tsung.
If anything, it is probably a character who has a grudge or reason to go after everyone and everything else. Liu Kang and Raiden seem like an obvious choice here, and frankly I would not mind evil Bruce Lee-god. At least MK9 made liu kang have character,
Also however, I doubt it would be one of the casualties of the previous game, as they are slaves to the bald-fuck happy brigade.
it COULD be Shujinko, however unlikely that is. You will actually have to imput commands to ask him to fuck off during the boss battle. Once successful, he will reply: "Yes, -char.name- I will do as you ask."

To add to what chrome said. Boon said that the boss will be someone we least expect to be. And Shinnok is the most expected option. So much for him being a final boss.

As much as I wish Shinnok will be the Final boss, Ed stating "people wont see it coming" In my honest opinion; its going to be Reiko.
MK 1, 2 & 3 were portrait in MK 9 totally remade into 1 story, 25 years later? Could be a part of the MK 4 & DA story maybe even a little bit of Deception.
But i'm a 99.99% sure that Shinnok & Quan-Chi will make an appearance in or FOR the story.

A villain protagonist would be good, hell, it could essentially be Shang's only saving throw now. Thank you for MKDA.

I want Liu Kang as the Dragon King, like the speculation about MKDA's lore. Oh, and Shang Tsung as a "redeemed" hero, yes please.

Shang Tsung as a redeemed, albeit untrustworthy, tweener hero would be awesome. Great wild card.
As for the big bad, my guesses would be:
Scorpion: Boon loves him, and I could see a scenario where he kills Shinnok and/or Quan Chi and perhaps takes control of the Netherealm. Maybe he somehow comes in to some legit power, perhaps from the gods.
Onaga: I'd file this under "some things are just meant to be" if they were looking for a reason. Shujinko's out there gathering kamidogu, Reptile's still alive. The two characters that draw him to the egg are still alive. It fits.
Shao Kahn: Why would this be a surprise? Well, for starters, he's dead. So any resurrection, the how and the why, would likely be surprising.
Special nomination for sub boss: Liu Kang. The guy was killed by his mentor after losing his best friend Kung Lao and while it doesn't appear the whole Kitana/Liu Kang thing ever happens, this is still enough for wanting revenge. Perhaps he gets manipulated or perhaps he just wants to kill Raiden.
Other than that, I have no idea. My first guess was Raiden, but we just had a whole game of him trying to save everyone. He even killed Liu Kang. Why would he do all of that to just turn evil and decide to destroy Earthrealm or something along those lines?
Nah, NRS needs to redeem him in this next game. Turning him evil after all he did in the last game would be the final nail in the coffin for his character IMO.

I would really like for it to be Raiden. I see it like this:
Zapping Liu Kang at the end was the beginning of him turning against the good guys. After teleporting everyone to a safer location he tries to resurrect Liu Kang but it's no use. Sonya and Cage bail on him after seeing him turn mad and that's where they find time to get busy. Raiden does everything he can to fix what he messed up but finds out he can't. He slowly loses his mind and sanity and becomes this pissed off elder god that tries to fix what he thinks is his mess but fails instantly, causing more chaos wherever he goes.
If it's not Raiden, I really don't want it to be Liu Kang.
