You forgot Armageddon right after Deception. The whole point of Deception was to put aside classic characters in favor of some more obscure favorites that hadn't been seen in a while and right after they felt the need to correct it by essentially making the 3D version of UMK3.

And deception was well received for it

But at the same time Deception was a reaction to Deadly Alliance tossing trilogy era characters in favor of the OGs and a bunch of new characters most people didn't like.
They're damned if they do and they're damned if they don't.

I agree with the op about seeing some characters over and over.

It's probably exactly because MK has such a dynamic roster that we have this problem. There's not a lot to complain about when pretty much every character consistently comes back every time. MK was pretty bold to shake things up so much, but they probably never quite anticipated the risk of dividing their fanbase like this and certainly never wanted to deliberately hurt anyone's feelings or make them angry. They were just, you know, making games.

This is MK9 2.0. That game was already boring back then. I had already known inside out pretty much all those cutscenes and characters from MK 1, 2, 3, Trilogy and Shaolin Monks. I didn't like it one bit. But hey, I was glad that MK started selling again and they could take the game further with a retelling of MK4, Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon. They didn't. I'm NOT buying their game.
I AM buying the comic. It's miles better.
MK fan forever, over and out for the next 3 years

Even if you don't like Jax and Sonya.... you have to admit they are both extremely ikonik as helll. You cannot escape their extreme epikness and ikonik-ness lol.
Sonya and Jax both had important roles in the MK movies, back in the 90s.
There was that Special Forces game...... They were both in the ikonik roster of MK vs DC. They had big appearances, again, in MK Legacy.... etc etc.
Sonya and Jax are like the Special Forces version of Scorpion and Sub-Zero : they remain playable year after year.
You say you like the comik book... I like it also, it had many funny SONYA BLADE moments in it, so far. lol (Sonya appears to be more obsessed and enraged than Scorpion, this time LOL)
Personally, yes, I am curently stressing over the roster and over Tanya LOL.... but once the game is actually released in April, I won't care anymore.
I already know in advance that the game will be epik, regardless. It's the Mortal Kombat tradition, you know?
*Maria_Linda shrugs*
I think everyone should prepare and save some koins to purchase MKX, the NEW 2015 MORTAL KOMBAT game! And have a party with some popcorn and patato chips.

I myself have wondered this, before.
Maybe Ed Boon and his sister Tanya have some kind of quarrel going on? lol
Some siblings hate each other, so you never know. It would be a mess.
You know, a long time ago... I heard or read (I can't remember where, who, nothing) that Kitana was originally supposed to be named Tanya, instead. In MK2.

That's one of the reasons why I like MK and that distinguish it from other fighting game staples. I don't get tired of it because it's always changing, its roster has never been static, most FG titles feel like an expansion, with MK there're always big surprises around the corner.

It's funny when people complain about staple characters.
MK has scorpion, sub zero, Raiden sonya so on so forth.
Street fighter has Ryu ken Chun Li and guile. What's the biggie of sonya and Jax return?
To ass my two cents I don't think they are playable in main game maybe just living and classic towers
