This thread is already taking rather broad strokes, it's probably best not to get into hypotheticals of hypotheticals about people who weren't even in some games.

Ok y'all to clear things up: Tanya ISN'T a ninja because she doesn't wear a loincloth! That's enough proof lol. Boon and co believe that wearing a loincloth makes someone a ninja so there wink

Tanya fits in the Edenian/Outworld female category, just not the ninja category.

Do you mean a mask? Because a loincloth is the part that goes from the belt and down to cover the crotch. And Mileena has never worn that, yet she is considered an MK ninja.

No I mean loincloth.

That's not a good definition to go by though. That would mean Raiden, Sindel and others would fit into the MK ninja category as well.

Still doesn't work, because Raiden has that.

Loincloth AND a mask then. I reckon all characters that are considered "ninjas" have worn one or the other, or in most cases both.

So have Kabal and Hotaru, but they aren't ninjas.

I've always seen Tanya as an MK ninja in spirit, along with Reiko.

Remember that MK4, their debut, was the game where the MK team started getting a little fed up of all the 'cast of identical ninjas' jokes the gaming press and fans were making, so they tried giving their cast members a litttle variety while maintaining some kind of ninjaish type of asthetic as it had become, like it or not, a hallmark of the series:

They let Scorpion keep his UMK3 outfit, but modified Sub's. Reptile got a makeover, and Kitana and Mileena got some variation when Gold came along. Adding 'ninjas who weren't ninjas' into MK4 ensured that they stood out a little bit but remained likeable to the ninja fanbase.

It was a good decision, as to this day you have fans of those two who swear up and down that they're not ninjas, never were, and don't need the crutch of that particular design trope to justify their popularity (and for the record, I'm not judging anyone who is).

Really, the fact is you could have given MK4 Tanya a mask, and given Reiko a hooded mask, and there'd have been no question; we'd just be looking back on them more clearly as examples of evolution and originality in the formerly streamlined MK ninja aesthetic. smile

Kabal doesn't wear a mask for the reasons the ninjas wore it. They wore it for disguise, Kabal wears it to breath.
As for Hotaru, that isn't a mask. It's more of a helmet that goes with the armor.
You really can't tell the difference between this:

And these:

You make a good point, and yes, it is obvious that when Reiko and Tanya were introduced to the series that their likeness was taken from the original MK ninja look, but they have both since evolved past that, as apparent in MKD-MKA, yet making their alts in their former likeness for those who preferred that.

But I dare say they weren't introduced as ninjas.

Oh I don't have a stake in this, I just never miss an opportunity to complain about the pussy/dick capes because I AM SICK OF THEM. SO SICK!

I can easily tell the difference... But you said that if they wore a mask and a loincloth, then that makes them ninjas. Now you are going into specifics, and that is where it counts! The details are important for naming who is an MK ninja and who isn't. And that is why I feel like Frost and Skarlet fits into that category as well, but not Reiko or Tanya.

IMHO the term "ninja" seems to always have been restricted, for some reason, to the palette swap ninjas of the UMK3-MKT era. So:

Scorpion
Sub-Zero
Reptile
Smoke
Ermac
Rain
Noob Saibot
Chameleon
Kitana
Mileena
Jade
Khameleon

Skarlet, Frost, Tanya, Reiko, etc. seem to lack that distinction because they were never "ninjas" derived from the same sprite and color modified. It's an odd distinction but the one that sticks in my mind.

So is the debate over? Are we agreeing to disagree or did we come to a conclusion?

No one could answer the question "what makes Tanya a ninja?"

I think we just agreed to disagree and put the debate on the shelf. ^^
