I voted cyrax because I knew Smoke would win I wanted to give Cyrax a fighting chance.
That being said I like smoke and my interest in him grew in MKD where he was paired with Noob, it was neat. Now I speak for myself but I think that that's part of the growing Smoke popularity. He introduced, with Noob (original sub), an alliance between ninjas that was cool and neat. Granted the story was kon of stale but it was cool. I personally do not rank smoke in my top 5, he makes top 10 but I was originally a Sub fan with Cage a close second, after MK9, well look at my name lol. Anyway the only reason I mention that is because aside from my reason I'm kinda grasping at straws for Smokes mass popularity. I'm not hating just wondering I'm curious to know the answer can some TRue smoke fan shed some light on this.
Also, moving forward, I like kangs plot (post zombie and pre zombie it was interesting at first but this direction is better) but he was MK Champ in 1 2 3 and 4 his death signified the fact that he needs to step down Im voting Shinnok. Love Liu but I don't want him to win sorry :/
Interesting tourney so far didn't expect Tsung to make it past Kenshi but hey surprise surprise, I was also shocked Jade made it. It was close but I was under the assumption Mileena had a stronger following, guess not.

All you guys being shocked by Smoke's popularity...
You need to remember he was a secret character in MK2, probably the most beloved classic MK game and then he (Human Smoke!) was the 2nd best character (behind Kabal) in UMK3 according to competitive community's tier-list. Also, he had those puffs of smoke surrounding his body, a catchy gimmick just like Scorpion's spear, although not as iconic, but still... And then there's his tragic story element. People are emotional about friends, so when Smokey (Subbie's friend) got captured and turned into a cyborg a lot of fans felt sympathy for the guy...
I predict the final match is going to be Sub-Zero vs Smoke.

There is a real why Liu Kang is the Mortal kombat champion. His gameplay is real sick if you know how to use him, His changes ups are insane and his bicylce steps on fire can go through almost any move, and im my opinion he is just as much "Cult" as Scorpion is
Shinnok is the only character whose rare appearances have never bothered me, because it only added to his significance and value.
Despite his gameplay in MK4 being absolutely HORRIBLE, storywise he is probably the most ballsy character of them all with the war he started, which resulted in the deaths of most of the gods.
Liu Kang, like Kung Lao, ended up getting himself killed. By Raiden of all people. Maybe next time he'll shut the hell up and just listen to Raiden.
I vote Shinnok.

Voted for Smoke in the last round for pretty much every reason Nephrite stated. Also, being able to change from cyborg Smoke to human Smoke in UMK3 was one of the coolest secrets the MK team gave us back in the day.
As for this one, I voted Shinnok.
I love what Liu Kang brings to the series, but he just feels like such a static character now. Never changing.
Meanwhile, Shinnok, who's received next to no chance to really take the ball and run with it as a lead villain (he was hurt from the outset by a lazy programming team that basically made him Shang Tsung when he was introduced in MK4).
But he's a fallen God. That one fact alone makes him compelling and puts his potential off the charts. I know he won't win, because he'd not a ninja, wasn't in MK1-3 etc (no problem, people vote how they wanna vote).
But I think that if people really stopped and thought about what they envision these characters as being in the future, I think they'd prefer Shinnok and I think the next game will only serve to illustrate that fact.

Shinnok of course.
I appreciate what they did to Liu this time around. Made him start to doubt Raiden. They finally made him a palpable character.
But Shinnok has always been a favorite of mine. He's menacing, manical, and always plotting.

i voted for shinnok. he's a fallen god with dark magic and the ability to summon a skeleton hand to wipe out his enemy's. that just screams cool.
Shinnok.
While Liu Kang was certainly improved in MK9, Shinnok is much more interesting as a character as a whole. Probably one of the most interesting characters in the series and one of the best villains. He has tonnes of untapped potential. But he desperately needs good gameplay and memorable gameplay gimmicks. His personality was pretty much nailed in MKA, so there is something to work with.
You mean as shitty and stupid humour as possible? Thanks but no thanks.
His only plot point was that he was underdeveloped and abandoned bitch for bad guys with next to no personality. MK9 changed all that - it mada him his own person with personality.

C'mon, one's a fallen GOD and the other is the resident Bruce Lee clone.
I like Liu Kang as much as the next guy but the fact that he's likely going to pull this one out surprises me a little.

I dunno, I thought that about Raiden and Fujin, as Fujin was actually winning around this time of the day. Then it slowly started to turn in Raiden's favor and by the time the evening came around, Raiden was running away with it and then some.
Something tells me the same will happen here. I hope I'm wrong though. I like Liu Kang a lot, but man, Shinnok has so much potential. I think that Armageddon was only the tip of the iceberg as far as how cool he could be.

Yikes, Shinnok is beating Liu Kang? That's kinda sad to me.
Shinnok has yet to come into his own. There's nothing memorable about him. His story is great, but his gameplay is ass. First he was a cheap knock-off of Shang Tsung and then the only thing he had going for him was that hand grab move.
Liu Kang is just fucking awesome. Bicycle kick, dragon morph and turkey voice forever.

Thanks for clearing it up I kinda wondered if it was because of his start as a secret character. And woot Shinnok!!!

He's only been playable in two games both of which are not exactly loved my the MK community lol. The MK4 characters just need some TLC. Shinnok has yet to come into his own. But I voted
He's one of my favorite bad guys and he makes a good arch nemesis to Raiden. Even better that Shao Kahn in my opinion.
