It's a re-imagining, not a reboot. I hope you're not misunderstanding my point of view. As a game, this would solve nothing. As a movie, that 7 minutes and 48 seconds was better than the first two movies combined (again, my opinion). As far as a movie is concerned, that's precisely why people should be praising this. I don't know about you, but I'm tired of the same ol' sugar-coated, PG-13, made-for-twelve-year-olds MK. I started playing the series when I was 12 or 13. I'm pushing 30 now. Ed needs to realize that all the original fans have grown up. And if not Ed, then I'll gladly settle for a film studio's approach, even if it means a re-imagining. Either way, we have nothing to lose as fans seeing as the main canon has ended. It's time to move on.

Big Update: Apparently our friends at Latino Review got the big scoop on this video. It was shot by Fame director Kevin Tancharoen and is supposedly a "test video" that was made to convince Warner Brothers to give them funding for a full blown hard R Mortal Kombat movie. So it's not for a video game, but it's not part of a movie - yet, at least. Kind of like that first Tron Legacy test trailer, this was made to convince them that fans would like this gritty take (and they certainly do). "Yes, this is the direction they plan on going for the Mortal Kombat reboot," says Latino Review. Even I'm amazed by all of that news. Let's hope it's all true!

I can't imagine why, for the life of me, so many people seem to dislike the idea of a reboot. As far as the film franchise goes, we've haven't ever seen a movie that yet keeps close enough to the source material in the games for it to mean much. For the love of the Infinite Creator, please let this be a sign to Warner Brothers that people are ready for more Kombat, but just not THIS version! Yes it's dark, gritty, violent and bloody, but you can't take away the rich mythology of something that was never intended to be realistic in any way as far as storyline concepts go. Scorpion and Sub-Zero especially! With such rich background stories, at least early on, I was always disappointed by the fact that instead of making them both neutral characters like so many of the other combatants were, they just sort of tucked them under Shang's wing as soulless henchmen. I would keep the grit and gore they're proposing, but only in line with some slightly revised source material for today's world. Far as execution of the fight choreography goes, there's some room for flexibility here and there. (The Tony Jaa movies demonstrate what an extreme for the human body is all by themselves for some of the best fight scenes yet recorded on film.)

My thanks to the producers and cast of an excellent conceptual film, but let us pray that this is just the steam to get the train rolling, and not a preview of the locomotive itself.furious

As a movie? Sure, it's better than MKA already. But really, that's no big accomplishment. I was only speaking from a gaming standpoint. I don't necessarily have a problem with this as a film.

I'm an old fan and I loved it! Please make this movie and or game! The clip kinda gave me that old feeling I got when I first discovered Mortal Kombat.
Mk IS dark and gritty, people. Not colorful spandex and projectiles. Stupid mk vs dc.

Despite what alot of you think, the essence of mk isnt sorcery and fantasy, its baddass fighting with leathal endings. Period.

I wanna see more of this. Who do I give my money to?

Spandex was a Mortal Kombat staple long before Warner Bros. came along, you know.

Its true, but times have changed since the early nineties. People now realize that wearing ones colorful underwear outside of their pants isnt very intimidating.

MK used to kinda scare me when I was little, and the situation proposed in this trailer kinda scared me. For me, thats what mk is all about.

If this were to actually be released in theaters, the following would occur:

Month 1 after release: "OMG THAT'S SO AWESOME, MK NEEDS TO LOOK LIKE THIS NOW!"

Month 6 after release: "DIdn't they learn anything when they had Chun-Li as a news reporter? Baraka's not a psycho doctor. This isn't anything like the games. First movie was way better."

This was a nice treat to watch, but no way in hell would I want this as the premise for a new MK flick. MK can be dark and gritty without having to fundamentally alter its plot, settings and characters.

Not really feeling it. The idea of a more realistic Mortal Kombat is good but I'd miss the mystical aspect of it.

Also I think you guys should keep in mind that all through this vid we are seeing Jax and Sonya's perspective of whats going on, the most skeptical, un-mystical people in mk.

Nowhere does it say that there arent darker forces at work than what they realize.

It's a nearly eight-minute demo reel of minimal consequence that replaces mutant half-breed creatures with a doctor who decided to mangle himself and a guy with a skin condition. Conventionally speaking, if there was something unusual to be revealed beyond that point, there'd be a hint of it, or else it's decidedly inconsistent with the vision being put forward in the preview. Granted, it isn't a trailer, but then, it's not a trailer because it's not an actual project.

Conventional wisdom seems to be the farthest of priorities for this thread, though. At times, at least.

At least it's REALISTIC and finally not for thirteen year olds. Shyeah...

I think doctor Baraka is way scarier than mutant denizen of outworld baraka. why?

Cuz I'll prolly never venture through outworld, but I do sometimes go to the doctor lol

I think its very creative and interesting. Plus very good fighting, which is what its all about.

Oh my.....this is just plain horrible, and sad.

Yes, the video itself is very well done, and yes it was interesting to watch, but my excitement completely died when they started to reveal such incredible amount of stupidity such as Reptile's and Baraka's origins.

Aside from Sonya, Jax, and Johnny Cage (before his very very stupid and lame death), this video makes me want to murder and cry.

I'm a huge MK fan, and people, call it whatever the fuck you want, but this is NOT Mortal Kombat.

THE GOOD

Sonya
Jax
Johnny Cage (before the idiotic death)
It looks well done and like they pay attention to what they are filming.

THE BAD

Everything else.

At least I'm glad the creators of this video took into account and consideration major characters such as Jax, Sonya, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero as main icons and examples. I'm glad to see they are giving them the proper star roles they deserve as some of the main icons of the series.

Sonya looks freaking hot and awesome. Jax was cool. But Scorpion was just plain predictable.

Well, good thing that's just you and your constant level of frustration.

Personally, I favor the option of ditching the worn out characters, keeping the ones actually worth holding onto, and moving on with the story WITHOUT erasing everything that came before it.

Essentially, I want a sequel.

With this I agree. + I want MK to stay what it is, with its beautiful fantasy and mythology.

I don't want MK to be ruined because of this "innovative" idiotic realistic ideas. I hope WB does make a movie, I hope they do something good with it, but something that's NOT re imagining the whole life, MK universe, and world of the characters that we all know.

All I can say is that it's.... Different. Very Different from what I would expect. The realism approach is unique but the way the characters are kind of take away from their video game counter parts. Jax as a captain of a MCU kind of downplays him although having Michael Jai White play him is an amazing idea. I'd rather have Jax stay as a Major in the United States Special Forces and Sonya as a Liutenant.

Johnny Cage working undercover after his acting career faded out? Not a good idea in my opinion given that he was a movie star it would be almost impossible to go icgognito, and working as an undercover agent to investigate insane freaks like the Baraka we seen in this video just don't seem right. Cage is always the one to get the shaft in the movies as he is always dying lol.

The Reptile idea was really cool, I thought that was a real creative twist to the character and given the dark gritty atmosphere and tone of this promo video I think that would work.

Shang Tsung however I think looses his appeal to me, if he is not a sorcerer who can shape shift and steal souls then his role is severely downplayed, although we can only speculate what his character is like I don't think we have any source of special abilities and powers that the games allow the fighters to have.

I'm very ehhh to the idea, although the execution of this video is top notch. The style and the shots are very professional and there are nice hints and cues to the characters such as the door reference to Jax's name in the games and Cage's poster arts to his movies, I think what appeals to me as a fan of Mortal Kombat is it's mysticism and it's unique creatures and worlds that have been created. I would give my money to see a movie like that video but I would be very impressed if someone can pull off a Mortal Kombat film that stays close to the storyline of the games.

This is interesting as an idea...a one off, shot in the dark type of thing. The video itself is entertaining enough. It's obvious the person behind this was passionate(about furthering his career with a recognizable property, not necessarily about the property itself).

Mortal Kombat has always been about violence, mysticism, and B-movie charm. I for one think there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I have mixed feelings about this video. First, I think the story is a little forced, it doesn't flow at all as it appears in this trailer (but this is just a test video so I'm sure they'd refine it for a feature length). The charaters of jax, sonya, and scorpion are absolutely fantastic! (And that was totally stryker walking by at the very begining).

I don't know how to feel about the new reptile and baraka. While at once it is radically different from the traditional canon of the games, its also something new for the characters. The thing I love about MK is it reminds me of old school kung fu flicks, and this definatly isn't that (it looks more like a crime movie with fight scenes now). The main character being scorpion is nice and the new portrayal of his character is BADASS, and his motivation is rock solid.

The fight scene between cage and baraka is probably the highlight of this video for me, its awesome! Except cage dying, why does johnny cage always die?! And finally, I think its awesome that the mortal kombat franchise is getting such serious attention again. We haven't seen mortal kombat media beyond video games in 15 years then suddenly this little doozy pops up, its pretty exciting.

So bottom line, I could see a movie adaptation of this trailer becoming popular and id definatly pay to see it.

I don't like it. It does not feel like Mortal Kombat to me.
It looks, and feels more like Saw, with people who just so happen to have the names of characters from Mortal Kombat.

If it's for a movie, then we can pretend that it never happened, and it will have no effect on the MK game canon.
If it's for the new MK game, then I have no interest in it.

Baraka, is a crazy doctor, who likes to hurt himself, fail.
Reptile has a medical condition, so he eats people.
I wonder what Meat's story would be. He'd probably be a burn victim, who's skin melted off of his body.

All in all, I fail to see how this is an actual improvement over what we had before.

Accept the fact that the Mk saga is done and finished. What originally drove me from the fanbase is the incessant and inbred fixation of overdetailing everything from the original. People spend vast amounts of time with plot analysis and trying to justify why some characters are better or not... To be blunt: grow finally up. And out of it.

At least you are lucky, and Hideaki Anno is not involved with this. Otherwise you would get the harsher response to fanboyism.

MK has been about spandex ninjas, demons etc. with the maturity of a teenager for over a decade and a half. You truly think you are entitled to have Midway, WB, Boon slave away to continue a failing outdated piece of your personalised escape fantasy? Really?

Accept that you dislike it, and move on, leave it then behind. What MK is is not yours to decide, so stop screaming and protesting like someone raped your sister...

Well, how about this? None of this spacey hoohah. He's a guy with a gun and he shoots people and this Sinestro guy is having parts of his body coated in gold! Mmm, realistic! Better than that crap Geoff Johns did to reinvigorate the franchise, eh? Pfeh!
