Well said. When I saw this trailer, I thought SAW straight away.. It's good, and I believe it'd work for Mortal Kombat.. but yeah, as awesome as it looks, I hope people don't get carried away.

It could be a pitch for a film to warner borthers so I think they would leave it out. But I agree with you about it to be apart of a movie has to be completely false.
Me, I think it just pitch for film or new game (I don't think it new mortal kombat game coming out soon since Ed is calling new game MK9 so I don't believe next mortal kombat to be remake). I like it but I don't like the idea of dropping mystical & mythological side of the story. I love scorpion and I do love idea of him being anti-hero

I think this might be a BIG clue that the new MK game coming out soon is the MK 1 remake that was rumored

PERKS:
- Scorpion actually seems to have something resembling a brain and/or discipline again.
- Johnny Cage dead before it even starts and no Liu Kang in sight.
- Michael Jai White could, quite possibly, make Jax almost tolerable.
CONS:
- Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, notwithstanding, it's still fucking Jax and Sonya Blade.
- Once you get past the reasonably "clever" realistification (yeah, I made that word up) of the characters, you realize it's just the same fucking shit dressed up in glossygritty packaging.
But Baraka is a surgeon! It's different...though still the same...only COOL now! Right..?
- If this is the new direction for the games and not just a teaser/preview/thing for the next movie, I'm actually a little relieved I don't have to worry about them fucking up Kitana or Sareena anymore. In this new continuity, they'll be fucked up from the word GO.
Speaking of which...who wants to bet the grittified Kitana is actually a former prostitute who enters the tournament to get back at her drug lord father? OH...and Mileena is a rival hooker who didn't like Kitana was Kahn's favorite ho, and when she talked back to him, he scarred her face..?
Because prostitution and drugs are gritty.
- It's not Mortal Kombat trying to be realistic and go in a bold new direction. It's Mortal Kombat trying to ape The Dark Knight and Casino Royale because those were successful and everyone knows A = B = C...right..?
I know Mortal Kombat made it's name for itself by aping existing successful properties and cramming a lot of blood and goofball violence into it....but it is kind of discouraging to see them regress back to that. Then again, maybe that's what they meant by "returning to their roots."
Your mileage may vary.
If this is just for the next movie...then I don't care. The first two sucked...why shouldn't the third? If, however, this is for the next game...count me out. It's just too laughable....much like a crossover with DC was laughable.
BARAKA IS A FUCKING SURGEON!!! THAT MAKES IT REALISTIC, DAMN IT!!! AND GRITTY!!!!!!

I LOVE YOU!!!! Seriously you have written the possibility about mileena and kitanan... Yeah like you said, first and second was a flop, and so will be this... This is nothing have to do make MK realisitc... It only makes it look likes it's hollywood bullshit movies, like every movies that are based on games. This will only kill the real MK we all used to know.
Eh, I think the real MK died after Deadly Alliance, and I think people are taking this video and making the entire game up in their head. They may be just killing off a bunch of monster characters, and keeping the core things like out world.
Either way, I don't care about the "realistic" approach in that I'm not super stoked, and I don't think it's so much better than before story wise, plus MK tends to over-hype and under-perform. So I'm not convinced that this premise alone makes it a home run.

I know its now being said that this has nothing to do with MK9 , but !
1. Why one week before E3 would they decide to release this ?
2. Why did Ed Boon cryptically tweet " So..... whats new ? " at shortly after Kotaku posted the video ?
3. Why hasn't Ed Boon tweeted a denial ?
It just doesn't make sense right. MK was supposed to get a dark , gritty reboot, warner brothers its now backing MK which would bring in tons of money to the development of the game, Warner Brothers has stated that they believe in the franchise and want to make it big again ........... now if this video doesn't point to all of those things I don't know what does.
I do know this however, after watching this video, if it comes to lite that it indeed has NOTHING to do with the new game, and the actual reveal is just another typical cartoon looking , plastic action figure 3D graphics with cheesy blood and gore, and the same tired looking characters and concepts , it will be one of the biggest let downs in history.
This is MK's chance to be relevant again, like it or not, and if this isn't the next MK game, I am going to be extremely pissed off.

He's the guy who did the fights for the excellent Undisputed 3: Redemption, on DVD and Blu-Ray right now. Same goes for it being a game really. Like it has been stated...it was just a pitch to promote the idea and pump up the fans of the franchise. Personally I am not too impressed by the story and character direction but anything is better than MK:Annihilation. I would not be surprised if more videos like this will pop up. I am just wondering why this video was posted by
MortalKombatRebirth and not MKCommunityManager if it was legit?

Big Update: Apparently our friends at Latino Review got the big scoop on this video. It was shot by Fame director Kevin Tancharoen and is supposedly a "test video" that was made to convince Warner Brothers to give them funding for a full blown hard R Mortal Kombat movie. So it's not for a video game, but it's not part of a movie - yet, at least. Kind of like that first Tron Legacy test trailer, this was made to convince them that fans would like this gritty take (and they certainly do). "Yes, this is the direction they plan on going for the Mortal Kombat reboot," says Latino Review. Even I'm amazed by all of that news. Let's hope it's all true..."

This site site claims this about the video "Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise."

I thought the trailer was amazing! Though I don't think the new game should necessarily follow the same course of the movie at least entirely.
I hope they introduce more characters n' stuff soon.
Baraka should surgically replace his teeth with like, knives and nails and uh...shave his head?

Just... what the fuck?
Okay, I can understand the impulse to ground MK in pseudo reality. But seriously, aside from character names and a tournament, what does it have to do with Mortal Kombat? Baraka's an evil surgeon! Reptile's got a rare genetic disease! Shang Tsungs an evil businessman/crimelord!
It just makes everything less interesting, in my opinion. You're going from a series of wantonly violent fistfights for the fate of the universe, to Michael Jai White deciding to have kinda-sorta-Scorpion fight kinda-sorta-Baraka and kinda-sorta-Reptile because he's too lazy to get off his kinda-sorta-Jax ass and do some police work.
Part of this is likely the old MK fan in me resisting change. But I pretty much hate videogame movies, because at best, they tangentially relate to their source material (at worst, they don't resemble it at all, or they do resemble the source, but fuck it up horrifically)
And Xiahou, I think your guess about Kitana is right.

Mhm.......This test failed.
Meh. Decent trailer.
Oh wait, that's supposed to be Mortal Kombat?
BLAAAARGGGHHH!!!
*L* If it were something else entirely, sure, go for it. Still looks cheesey as hell and it's plot is borrowed from about a hundred movies from the 80s. But MK is a fantasy action martial arts movie. There's no fantasy in this at all. They're trying too hard to ground it in reality. I know that's the big trend for movies these days, but some things shouldn't be changed.

Interesting. I really hope this is just an really elaborate promo video for E3, because if this is the new movie It looks just as bad as the street fighter chun li movie.
On a side note I managed to get a screen capture of the image of sub-zero that flashes when scorpion is looking at the photos:
[edit]: I'm not saying it's a horrible video entirely. As a promo piece for the new game It really is awesome if MK is going back to it's very dark roots. it should get every MK fan excited. I don't think a piece of advertising since the first MK game was released has been as good as this, but if this is a trailer for the new movie it's absolutely terrible. Nobody wants to see Baraka as some human psycho that somehow managed to fuse knife scalpels to his forearms, or reptile with some kind of skin disorder.
Watching the video I get one of two impressions 1 it really is a promo for the game and not the movie. While it does have production value, it does lack special effects for a movie. Just look at when baraka pulls out his blades it's almost stop motion, and very jerky. Very poor quality there for a movie. And if it's not that, then it has to be a marketing pitch. It's probably something more along the line what Microsoft has done with those shorts for the halo games.

I don't really need to say anything else. Tony the Tiger said it all for me. Despite my very angry knee-jerk reaction, I have no hard feelings toward Septar or anyone else who thinks this is positive direction for MK.
*whiskey swig*
But no one can say that this contains the essence of MK because of graphic gore and violence. Mortal Kombat was about the "kill" innovation, and even that's not the essence of the series; that's simply what MK was famous for. Crow's right, there is no bar to raise: Mortal Kombat was never about trying to nauseate the player with violent elements. Incorporating MK into the almost-dead torture porn genre isn't going to reinvigorate the series.

I think this is worth noting... I had thought the images of the "reptile baby" were very familiar... saw this about a year ago:

I think it was pretty awesome BUT where is the magic and fantasy that comes with MK.
Like others are saying its TOO realistic.
There's gotta be some kind of balance between the two.
How would they explain all the crazy lookin creatures in MK? Give them diseases like Reptile?
