Honestly I don't know what the up roar is about.

When I first watched the clip I was a little taken aback by the stark differences between this, and the original material. I first said to myself, "If this is a movie, more power to them...go nuts! But if this is the game, whoa-ho-hoo, stop this sh!t now, and first give me closure to the previous story before you move on."

But judging this solely on it own merits and ideas, I can get behind this "concept" whole heartedly. MK has been around for years and honestly, in many ways, has gotten stale. With this I see real change. Real grit, and not that bull-sh!t spandex grit.

Yeah, yeah...Baraka being a crazy, psychotic doctor is kinda lame when compared to him being a demon hybrid from Outworld in the original. And yeah, I see the point that Reptile has been reduced from the lone survivor of the Saurian race, brought into servitude by the Emperor Kahn as one of his most lethal assassins, and into a disfigured, and malformed, serial killer. But as the two biggest changes in this clip, I for one am fine with them, as I see them as new starting point for these characters, and new opportunities for them to go somewhere.

IMO, from what I can see in this clip, they just successfully! reinvented the franchise while keeping the essence of each character the same.

P.S. - I at first also thought the mysticism was gone from the clip but it seems to me that Hanzo, Scorpion, is and has been cold and dead for a while. Again, I see these as character templates a starting points, and there is a lot of room to grow...

Oh my god, Xiahoudun, that's hilarious. Should've seen it coming. EDIT: But I disagree with your assessment of Raiden. I imagine he'll by an old-school mental health worker, who firmly believes in the efficacy of shock therapy. He'll put his keen psychological skills to work, advising Scorpion on his opponents.

I see a lot of people having mixed feelings about this. I for one think it was fantastic. It doesn't take anything away from the MK i know and love. If anything, it puts a fresh spin on it. In a series that has become stagnant over the years (in my opinion), you'd think something like this would be a welcomed change to a broader scope of fans. But you can't please everyone. MK's plot as we know it ended with Armageddon. It's time for something new, I say. At least where a movie adaption is concerned. MK needs to grow up sooner or later.

Would you say Street Fighter has grown stagnant? Again, me here, but I've only grown fonder despite that SF has never changed it's aesthetic design.

I wouldn't go as far as saying MK has become stale, but rather the development team has failed to nail down a a solid formula that translated the series from it's 2d roots into 3d. Plus all the side steps the series has taken with humor, and developing a mythology with so many holes in it, and side features (like konquest mode, chess, and puzzle kombat).

Street fighter, story-wise, is not even in the same league as MK. SF's story is so second fidle that I'm wondering why you even mentioned SF in this story dicussion. Gameply wise SF is far from stale, but gameplay isn't even a component of this dicussion.

MK needs some new blood to keep it fresh, and this clip is new blood. Just for the record, I don't think that this is better, or that it should replace the old. I just think it is fresh and could be something with the right influence.

To me, the humor is a core element. It's the reason why we can enjoy violent deaths in B movies yet have trouble stomaching meticulous murder scenes in Saw II. I think MK would be generic without it.

I agree with the extra modes and plot issues.
asmodeus: If this were a special project that wouldn't occupy the space of a movie or game sequel, I would just have fun with it. Thankfully, it's starting to look more and more like this was a rejected pitch. As for SF, the story is superficial, but the characters still somehow manage to be lovable. People can call them thin, but it may be more appropriate to call them archetypal.

It's harder to say "Street Fighter is stagnant" because while it hasn't done much to progress itself as a series, the games are fun to play and the replay value is high. You need these things for a fighting game. With Mortal Kombat, it has long been about style before substance. It's no secret the developers feel MK should be a more casual game that people can pick up and play, I can quote the team members saying that many times if need be. MK has lived off its style and its storyline. The only reason it can become "stale" is because they have failed to make a fighting engine people are willing to play with for years, not because they can't produce interesting storyline or interesting visuals.

So really, even if you like this video, what does it really do for MK? It's once again just style, and not the substance. You can only hope for something you can play for years, which should be a developmental goal with any fighting game.

If this is a teaser for the new video game: great! I'd live to see a reboot, and a reimagined version of classic characters. And, they might actually make me like Baraka...normally I find Baraka a completely annoying character.

If this is a trailer for a new movie: HELL NO! Any movie made should be about Mortal Kombat. That bore no resemblance to the video game I know and love save for characters' names. And there are numerous ways to make something gritty and even pseudo-realistic while keeping a fantasy element.

Well said and it's the truth.

The storyline in SF is weak at best, I don't think many people even care much for the SF story, at least I don't. But people keep playing it because it is fun, easy to learn but hard to master.

The best storyline in the world doesn't mean jack if there is no incentive to keep playing.

If that's the way they want it, they should just stick to making movies.

I think that's where fans are divided. They either feel the comedy belongs or it doesn't in the series. Me I can tolerate to some degree like in MK 2, but it just just went down hill from MK3.

I think Crow hit it right on the head. I think a lot of the hardcore fans have been wanting an MK game that they can play for hours on end like the old MK1-3 games since Deadly Alliance. There have been so much changes in the gameplay, and lack of balance.

It's the reason why Street fighter hasn't changed a who lot. They stuck with what worked, and kept the hardcore fans happy. Capcom saw they had trouble generating success with SF in 3d. I think the only flaw SF suffers from is the huge roster of characters.

Thanks TheManWithTheGoldenGun for reminding me of who it was.

[edit]: I think the few things that the hardcore community for MK can agree on is that they want the series to return to it's violent roots, and they want the series 3d.

It's a little less dense and linear than MK's, and also much less contained within the games. It's arguably more mythological or like a fable than MK, too. Not that digressing into SF really means much of anything, in much the same way game modes, wacky posters, silly finishers, and other things don't impact on the strength of MK's story.

..... annnndd there is no way this is an actual part of an upcoming movie because once again that baby reptile was stolen from a youtube video titled demon baby from a year back.

I still don't understand the hate for this video ?

What did you expect ?

Where do they take the series ?

So basically what most of you wanted was Mortal Kombat I and II , but remade verbatim with updated graphics and gameplay with nothing new to the story ... you realize this game is almost 20 FUCKING YEARS OLD ??

Your really think a straight remake is what is going to get Mortal Kombat back into the main stream again ?

The problem with most of you, is that like me, you were all probably in your early to late teens when the original came out, so now you are all close to the 30 years old range. Which also means that most of you listen to todays music and say it sucks, and see horror movies remade by Michael Bay and say they suck, and you want everything to be how it was in the 90's because the 90's were fucking awesome !!!!!!!!

Problem is , that's not how life goes, and if you want sell something 20 years old, you need to repackage it for today's market.

THIS VIDEO , is how you appeal to people who vaguely remember Mortal Kombat, and make them think its cool., while also throwing in a lot of winks and nods to the core fans.

I love old school MK, but this "reboot" is exactly how I imagined how Mortal Kombat should be. The old story is told, and we all know how the story ended ........ with Armageddon. So why tell the same old story again ? Seriously ? What more can you do with these characters other than completely redesign them ?

I really don't give a fuck about Raiden and the Warriors of Earthrealm, that shit is tired and its old. Lets move on !
