There's already so much hate towards the gay community, we shouldn't be adding to it ourselves. And that's what saying one is "straight-acting" does. It makes it seem like it's only okay to be gay if we try to act like straight people. No one is crying about it. Just saying that there are better ways of saying you aren't overly-effeminate acting.

I think you're taking it the wrong way. I explicitly said that I'm not taking offense at what anyone in this thread has said, and was merely discussing the term in general.

Meh, it's normal for a 39 page thread about something as broad as "gaymers" to go off-topic. TBH this site is the only one i've frequented where they were relatively dogmatic about staying "on topic". Seems like anything gaymer related should be topic-y enough.

It's odd, some gay men actually find the thought or fantasy of having sex with a straight man attractive and therefore go for the "straight-acting" type of guys. I guess it's a preference more than anything.

Personally, I'm not one of them. I've had sex with a few straight guys who were curious to see how it would be with another man, and frankly, they didn't know what they were doing half the time. XD

My 2 cents:

I think the only people who should get offended by the term "straight acting" are masculine gays. How confusing to grow up acting "normal" just to have to label your demeanor as something other than what you are (gay).

There's no right or wrong way for a gay man to act like. Same goes for heteros. In fact, people fail to realize, what never gets any attention, are effeminate straight men. You've all heard of those married straight men that like to prance around in their wives' clothing. Or the straight man that gets a sex change cuz he feels like a woman inside.

But we have to face facts. In general, whether male or female, masculine people are attracted to women, feminine people are attracted to men. So I think "straight acting" is a perfectly valid term as a synonym for masculine since most butch men are straight.

And I too hate it when people say things like "no fems" on manhunt, but I have to confess that I am guilty of being one of them. Femininity is a big term off for me, even if it's subtle. When I'm with a man, I have to feel that he's a man on the outside and the inside. Otherwise, the energy is all wrong.

A lot of gay guys feel that way, and as a femmy myself, it hurts when I read those comments, but I understand where they're coming from. All these problems and imperfections that come with homosexuality in general are just things we have to live with, so no use in getting upset.

If I may comment, I find the devision within the LGBT community to be very sad. There's gays who mistreat and mock transgendered people, gays who bash feminine gay guys etc etc. I don't use the term "straight acting", mainly because of the fact that all straight people don't act a certain way. When I came out, everyone would be like, "you're cool with me because you don't flaunt it and parade around like so and so, as long as you're not making out with whoever or trying to come onto me we're cool." In other words, they're still homophobic, but they'll tolerate me because I behave within the confines of their rigid gender roles and other nonsense. I also hated when people would add the "as long as you don't try anything on me" comment, 99%, nobody wants the dude saying it anyway, which pissed me off even more. Oh and if you guys can hold hands and make out with your significant other and flaunt your relationship, why would you think that we don't have a right to because you're not used to seeing it? Ridiculous.

We're all in the same boat, and yet the LGBT community divides itself, instead of focusing on what really matters, gaining a more equittable role and fair treatment in society, we focus on dissing other members for being a certain way.
Oh and small note: the person who was describing themselves as straight acting wasn't dissing anyone, just describing himself in the best way he could.
As long as you're a respecful person, I don't care how you act, rigid gender roles are way too overrated anyway.

Are gay men given the same respect as lesbians? How many times have we seen lesbians portrayed as something cool and acceptable? Yet when they show 2 men kissing on TV... It has to be something wierd or disgusting... never something sexy unless it is specifically a "gay show" like Will & Grace or Queer as Folks.

Do we even all click together? For example, I personally find it hard to connect with lesbians because A) on the outside they have nothing I want, and B) on the inside they're usually butch so they have little social appeal to me as I am more socially drawn to fem guys or girls.

Butch and fem gays have different mindsets, and even with the femmies there are differences. Some like what they are, others become trannys or want to go even further than that.

I don't mean to say that we shouldn't unite, but clearly we are not all the same. "GLBT" is a very very broad term, encompassing millions and millions of different people.

Some are more priviledged than others (like masc gays or fem lesbians), so I hate this whole "we're all equal" notion. It is not true no matter how often people throw the word "community" around. And all the prejudice and discrimination within our own "community" proves how right I am.

I am not proud of that btw. I really do wish we could all unite and get equal treatment. Only when World Peace is officially declared will that ever happen.

I do indeed agree with you on this matter as well. I am quite the individualist and believe that every person is his or her own. No two persons are exactly alike and thus should be treated differently. That said, I believe we are all equal in the fact that we are all humans. We are all people. But people are different from one another and can therefore not all be treated alike. It would also be impossible to do, as not everyone will be able to get along.

It is a typical human mindset and also easier for people to put others in groups so they know how to relate to them, but it is quite the wrong state of mind to do so. Just because I am gay I don't like being treated as one, because being gay is not all I am, but just a part of who I am, and therefore I don't want to be put in a box as "the gay guy". I am also alot of other things than just that.

All in all, it's about having an open mind and approach people as individuals, letting go of stereotypes and accept the fact that we aren't all alike.

@Sinner You have entirely missed the point of my post.

I'll repeat myself, my post was about being less harsh toward each other as it ends up only hurting ourselves and as I made quite clear, all LGBT people are not the same. I have never and will never claim that we should all be treated as a group or be judged as solely one group, we're more than our sexual orientation. That was never what my post was about, that was a misinterpretation of what I meant.

Edit: Or maybe I'm having trouble stating my opinion I dunno I think I've got it now: for example, soldiers who are fighting in a war together, they're all in the same boat, regardless of race, religion, gender etc because they're all going through a similar experience, you can be different and be in the same boat. Being in the same boat =/= being the same. It just means you have something in common with someone. Another example, when I was on my school's Tennis team, everyone was different ethnically and religiously, (we had East indians, Whites, Blacks, etc on the team and we had Muslims, Christians and Agnostics/Atheists on the team). We're all in the same boat because we all have to go to the practices and play on the same team. I hope this edit explains everything much better. I'm not frustrated, but I hate being misunderstood, perhaps I'm at fault for not being as clear, either way sorry if I seem annoyed, cheers guys.
