SDCC: Todd McFarlane Talks Spawn & Mortal Kombat 11
9:9:9:9

Comic book icon Spawn is one of three guest characters still to come in future DLC for Mortal Kombat 11. Creator Todd McFarlane is never short for words and had plenty to say about what he's seen so far when he was interviewed at San Diego Comic-Con. Watch:

The "Toddfather" was positively gushing when he talked to IGN! He wasn't allowed to spill the beans on every detail just yet, but said he's been seeing material throughout development and he's impressed!

McFarlane said his one condition for including Spawn was that NetherRealm Studios make him the most appealing character to Mortal Kombat players. That carte blanche approach sounds like it's paying dividends for diehards on both sides of the franchise divide, with the writer/creator impressed by deepcut references the developer has mined from specific back issues!

"I don't know if you've seen the game, but it's super-cool now! I mean, they're doing crazy stuff in that game! Right? And I went, you can do it, but I sort of only have really one condition. This thing needs to be so cool - from a Mortal Kombat fan's point of view. Not a Spawn point of view! You will have done your job, and I will be proud of you, if somebody download's this character at some point - doesn't even know who it is! They go, 'I dunno, his name is Prawn, or Spam, or something, but he's my favourite character to play!'. 'Cause if you hit that in your game, then you're gonna make all my Spawn fans happy!"

Spawn was created and published independently by Todd McFarlane and Image Comics in 1992 -- just a few months before the first Mortal Kombat took arcades. The story of mercenary Al Simmons and his deal with the devil is right at home with the likes of Scorpion. As is his attitude towards violence. That could be the reason McFarlane has been gungho for this crossover since 2014 and during Mortal Kombat X.

Spawn was officially announced in the Shang Tsung & Kombat Pack announce trailer. You can get a hint of what's to come in recent sketch teasers, alongside next Kombat Pack fighter Nightwolf, who can be seen in a short teaser trailer. Does the hype have you? John Tobias Shares Jax & Sonya Artwork
Klassic Special Forces strike a pose!

It's always special when John Tobias shares original artwork from his personal archive. The Mortal Kombat co-creator recently treated fans to a sketch of Jax and Sonya - the original Special Forces! Check it out:

The black & white sketch is from an undetermined point in the late nineties, right around the time Jax and Sonya were starring in Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. As fans know, Sonya was originally intended to be a playable character in the 2000 action-adventure title, but was excised before its troubled release.

Tobias shared the artwork via Twitter, where he's also offered intriguing glimpses of early Goro concept art and arcade cabinet designs. Nightwolf returns in preview trailer!

Nightwolf is the next hotly anticipated downloadable content fighter coming to Mortal Kombat 11! The long wait is advancing toward an end. Payoff your patience with the first look at "Grey Cloud" in motion in a new teaser trailer:

The 9 second offering comes courtesy of a tweet by Creative Director Ed Boon. His message went straight to fans: "We know you guys have been dying to get a glimpse at Nightwolf for Mortal Kombat 11. So here's that glimpse..."

We've seen Nightwolf in a close-up screenshot, hanging axe teaser, and stylized sketch teaser, but this is the first full frame vision of the newest incarnation.

The design updates Nightwolf's classic look, embellishing his typical blue & red palette with new headgear and armored attire. His trademark hand axe radiates in blue, leaving behind a more familiar neon green glow as the chosen warrior calls down lightning to ignite the weapon.

Storm Collectibles Display Mortal Kombat Fatalities at SDCC
Storm finish them at Comic-Con!

Storm Collectibles have been a staple of San Diego Comic-Con for several years now. Their 2019 SDCC display doesn't disappoint - showcasing the expanding Mortal Kombat lineup with gruesome Lin Kuei cyber fatalities! Take a closer look at the accessory assault:

The Hong Kong toymaker's 1:12 scale line keeps it strictly klassic, drawing design inspiration from the original arcade sequels for UMK3 Scorpion and MKII Baraka.

The Lin Kuei cyber-assassins introduced in Mortal Kombat 3 are the feature stars of the display. Sektor stands out with his compactor fatality threatening a gruesomely repainted Scorpion already splattered in his own blood. The mechanical apparatus attaches to an open chest cavity for game authentic accessorizing!

Smoke can be seen standing on a spike field inspired by the iconic Pit Bottom arena with his robotic arm attachment extending from the shoulder. Cyrax strikes a slightly more impressive pose, chest cavity open with his iconic green cyber net floating threateningly in front of him!

Toyark has extensive coverage, with more images from the Storms display, including figures based on Injustice, Street Fighter, Tekken, Tekken. and King of Fighters!

Baraka and Scorpion have already been released. Cyrax is next cab off the rank, with designs pending approval on the other cyber-assassins. Got yourself a pre-order? Who do you want to see next?
