Some story chapters feel really disjointed with the random flashbacks. Also don't worry for Mileena, here we love to repeat "death means nothing in MK" , half the cast was killed in MK9, and look how all the popular ones returned almost intermediately.

I'm glad Mileena's dead. She was probably the one character I wanted to die and I hope she doesn't come back for at least the next two games.

I mean, it was cool and all but it just annoys me. I love her though, so I'm super bias hence me being pissed lol.

As I said earlier today, I don't think people's saltiness with story mode was a criticism of the story (or story mode) in and of itself... I think it was just that there was a lot of hope there would still be a little more love for the 3D era characters to be squeezed out (particularly Havik and Reiko, as the hot rumors suggested) so once we all knew everything, and the boss was revealed to be Demon Shinnok, that hope died and people got cranky.

As I also said earlier, if this game's story were 100% unchanged... no modification whatsoever. BUT A) They had been upfront about Shinnok as the boss, and B) The various cameos were actually playable instead of just cameos... I think the entire community would be 1000 times less salty about what has been revealed in Story Mode.

It wasn't so much people were angry about story mode, it was that the roster is unimaginative and takes no risks. And furthermore, uses dead characters who are big names, but not terribly involved (like Liu and Kitana) rather than living characters who are more relevant to the story of HERE and NOW (like Rain and Mileena).

Seeing story mode was the final nail in the coffin of confirmation that the roster was as ho hum as everyone thought it was. No surprise Reiko. No surprise Fujin. So everyone got upset.

The story mode in and of itself, all that aside, isn't bad at all.

I was on my iPad when I saw her fully. You can see her in her glory during Sonya's chapter when she's helping to track down Kano.

I went to bed last night right after I watched the first 3 1/2 chapters, up until Kung Jin was squaring off with Raiden (I think around pg 33 of this thread). What I saw was brilliant and everything I wanted from story mode. I've seen a lot of complaints about story mode only being 12 chapters, but doesnt every chapter have four fights in it? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I only remember MK9 having three fights per chapter. That means more material packed in to each chapter in MKX.

And a question for people who watched all of story mode; is there a QTE for each chapter? I remember ch 1 had Johnny Cage battling Scorpion and Subby in the chopper, ch 2 had Kotal fighting Kano in the wagon, and ch 4 had Kung Jin firing arrows at Ferra/Torr. Don't recall a QTE in ch 3 tho.

Allright, here it goes:


PROS:

- the storyline looks on itself coherent enough to be considered continuous. The pace seems to be fine at first, but I will have to rewatch this alot of times..

- the acting is better than MK9 and that, aside a few hiccups was not bad. The characters are not flat cartboards for once.

- fucking awesome camerawork. Really. I am impressed by this.

- dialogue. Less corny, and surprisingly ... FUCKING REPTILE TELLS MILEENA OFF in front of everyone. That was fucking awesome for Reptile.


CONS:

- people are holding the idiot ball regularly. Stupid things ahoy.

- sometimes the flashbacks come abruptly and sometimes there seems to be a need for actual foreknowledge to know exactly what goes on. See: Sektor.

-shorter in terms of scope, and the general speed does not help either. This will cover ALOT less ground than initially thought. While Boon and co. did not lie by setting up a 25 year period, the general story goes by very fast, with occasional bouts of flashbacks.

- not all of the cast is represented.

- cutscene transitions are extremely bad. The scenery completely dissolves into one of the arenas-thus creating a bad sense of everything connecting to the Market for example...

- general disregard to the characters outside the roster.

- INCONSISTENT with the comics. Takeda's backstory, Scorpion's family names... yeah, continuity is not something NRS paid attention to.

- extremely predictable. There is not much of twists or surpises in these so far. Basically it is the Quan Chi Show again in one form or another.

- general disdain for the remainder of the cast. Some characters exist to be killed off or beaten. Jobbing is prevalent.

Seems this game is like a warmup for something else. Kinda.

I am generally warming up to the story so far, the best result probably will be that this is a extra few chapters on the MK9 storyline. That however, still does not excempt NRS from general lazyness and irregard towards its own canon.

One thing is for certain, I am no longer seething, but for all intents and purposes -for me- this is a no-goer. Watch it on youtube, and that is it.

It's like watching a wunderkind underachieving out of lazyness for years. Wasted or half-formed potential.
