A grim feeling came to me when I came across this tweet today, posted by Ed Boon.

RT @Yonderage @noobde Name one Mortal Kombat character that wona39;t be playable in Mortal Kombat, go! EB: Hsu Hao

— Ed Boon (@noobde) June 26, 2014
It is no mystery that Hsu Hao is one of, if not the most disliked character of the entire Mortal Kombat series. However, he is not to blame; the developers are. Personally, I feel any character can be developed into a good one. With that, I looked over what little information there is about Hsu Hao to form some sort of personality. After viewing the info, I concocted what I is a good concept for Hsu Hao: a sadist.

Here's my take on a bio for a reinvented Hsu Hao:
______________________________________________

There are more than 7,500 members of the Red Dragon clan. They are all ruthless, shameless killers; they are trained to be. However, in the midst of the thousands of well-trained soldiers lies the frightening exception known as Hsu Hao.

A being prone to violence, Hsu Hao was the only member to be hand-picked by Mavado himself. Unlike the rest of clan, he was never trained to be a killer, as he came equipped with the prowess and desire to end lives. Hsu Hao takes a borderline psychotic pleasure in watching others die, and even greater pleasure in being the cause of it. Feared by nearly every one in the Red Dragon, Hsu Hao skyrocketed in the ranks until he became Mavado's right-hand man.

Hsu Hao is pleased to be under the command of only Mavado, for his missions will always involve spilling blood. It is therefore no surprise that he was ecstatic when Mavado gave him the task of destroying the Outworld Investigation Agency. For Hsu Hao, this meant countless bodies for him to play with.

______________________________________________

I figured only someone a with love for death would be eager to initiate such a destructive act. With that, I created a sadistic personality for Hsu Hao.

Feel free to share your opinions on the concept as well as Hsu Hao himself. Do you think he should be reinvented, or do you feel he's not worth it?

Can you for once be more created with your posts? Pretty please?

Anyway I always thought as Hsu Hao as some kind of Nazi skum, much like the guy from the Hellboy movie, the freaky one.

That would be the perfect skin for Hsu Hao, and he needs another name.

I like the sadist thing, but the nazi from the hellboy series is also a sadist of course.

Hsu Hao can be retooled into a likeable character like virtually all characters can. I don't think MK has anyone outright unsalvageable

The thing I've never understood is that if they hated these characters so much why did they put them in the games in the first place? Was Midway's upper echelon forcing them to or something?
I don't get why people want a shitty terrible character to come back. I'm even talking about Mavado in this case too. The had their chance, it's done. Of course it's not Hsu Hao's fault, but at this point why take that character and reinvent him when they can just create a new character who is better? What is the appeal of keeping old MK characters? Is it just because they are MK characters? I really don't understand. He's fucking awful because they made him bad, he was stupid looking anyway, had a stupid hat, they just didn't care. So no one else should. The name and character are finished. Get over it furious

Using that logic, there wouldn't be any point in making new characters because they all have the potential to come out horrible.

In addition, if NRS just continues to make new characters to replace previously new characters who are deemed bad, we'll just end up with a sea of bad characters.

Instead of potentially replacing bad with bad, it would be much more productive to make the bad good. That's my view on it, anyway.

Yeah but every character can't make it. Not everyone can become popular, and unfortunately for Hsu Hao he got the short end of the stick. It wouldn't make sense to me for them to bring back a character that's universally disliked.

This isn't about characters being popular, but being well-developed.

Just seeing how people treat the bad characters we have now just makes me worried about the set of new characters We'll be getting MKX. Considering how easy it is for characters to be condemned and forgotten, I fear we're just going to end up with another batch of rejects, like with Deadly Alliance and Deception.

Is this really what we want, shunning every character that's deemed bad? Is this really the solution we're asking for?

We're 4/4 right now, which is way better than what we've gotten in the past. I mean we were getting reveals previously that were immediately reviled universally, like Kobra (at the time codenamed Ben or Ken).

And then we got characters that we thought looked good that ended up having better characterization in our imagination than what we were given (i.e. Kira and Ashrah).

I honestly don't know what happened during the Midway years. I mean, I'm sure we'll probably get a few duds, but we're already doing way better than previously.

I liked Hsu Hao. I never get the hatred for him. I liked how he was an enemy for Jax and I liked his look.

Hsu Hao is shit tier. He is down there with fucking Meat and Mokap. This is the second time now that he's been the first character to be confirmed as not being part of the roster. I have never understood why people like him. He was a shit character and he'll always be a shit character. Nothing can be done to save him. I think we should forget he even exists and just move on. Really happy Boon ONCE AGAIN confirmed that this guy is not playable.

Eh, I'm on board with this idea. Given the right backstory reinvention, and coupled with a unique fighting style, I think Hsu could definitely be a cool character. Every character has potential, sometimes it just takes a little effort to bring that potential to the forefront and make it realized. NRS definitely has the resources now to reforge Hsu into something besides "shit". I honestly blame Midway for most of the dud characters anyway.

Saying they should just be forgotten and replaced with new characters is just lazy in my eyes. Why can't there be new characters AND retooled old characters?

Would love to see Frost or even Khameleon get the Stryker treament and make a grand re-appearance. tongue

Well, what did you think of my concept?

Was it really that bad? sad Please explain if you can.

I'm sorry, but this doesn't make a lot of sense, to me at least.

If you're going to reuse his story, you might as well bring him back.

It's not like we're shunning them, we're just moving on. It's a reasonable solution in my book. With a roster of 26-30 characters and supposedly reserving half of it for new characters, there's just not enough spots for the other 60. It makes sense to me that they would go with the characters that had more of an impact, not the ones in dire need of a reboot.

I thought the concept was pretty good, but it's just Hsu Hao himself. He was just such a pathetic character that could have been so much more, but due to laziness and just a general rush he was a 2-bit character that most people ignored. I agree that it's not his fault, but the many times Vogel, Boon and others have stated that they just downright hate the guy just solidified him as a character that won't ever get a reboot. Which is a shame, seeing as Hsu Hao could have actually been great if something like your concept was done with him, but he's too far gone to be rescued now. I guess the team have just moved on and left him behind.

Gonna play devil's advocate here. First impressions last a lifetime.

I think most people would be more accepting of a new guy that looks better with literally the exact same story than Hsu Hao whom was introduced to us as the gay stripper from Terminator 2.

No way, if they're going to make a new character I'd rather they give him his own story than recycle someone else's.

I'm not preitioning for Hsu Hao's inclusion in MKX, but his development, considering his confirmed absence from MKX.

It would be nice if the support of Hsu Hao's reinvention could reach Boon, at least for the sake of viewing.

If my concept is at least half decent, then there is proof Hsu Hao can be reinvented.

I'm tired of constantly seeing characters thrown into the dirt. If Hsu Hao can be transformed into something better, it could spell hope for many other condemned characters, including Kobra, Kira, Drahmin, and Sheeva. I'm sure I'm not the only person to have created a new concept for Hsu Hao.

Hsu Hao doesn't need reinventing tbh. He was around to betray the OIA and that was it. His story came to an end. Not every character needs to be CONSTANTLY reoccurring just being about for no reason.

Makes perfect sense. His character design sucks. So let's give his backstory to a new character with a better design. He's hated because of his design and his nationality?

Or you can just give Hsu Hao a better design.

Or is that just completely impossible to do?
