You guys have to admit. MK needed a fresh new start. This could potentially be exactly what we all needed for this series. I can't control my excitement right now if this is indeed for the new game.

I don't trust Kotaku. I'll wait for an official confirmation from someone on the team before I can treat this as truth. I'm pretty sure it has to be real though, even if the actors are B and C list, they had to get paid.

What does Kotaku have to do with this? They just posted the video.

Anyway...It's definitely not for a movie and it's definitely not fan made. I guess it's for the game, but I didn't expect that big of a change in a potential reboot. Either way, it's very interesting and I'd like to find out more.

Kotaku being the only news site reporting on it, for starters. If IGN and Gamespot pick it up and call it legit, then yeah I won't need MK team confirmation to believe in it.

Kotaku > Gamespot & IGN since long ago...

I don't know if it's a promotional MK9 trailer, a new MK movie trailer, or the best fan-made trailer since Zelda, but kudos for them.

This new MK reminds me alot of Twisted Metal Black, which took the concept of twisted metal 2 and made it alot darker.

This game should be called Mortal Kombat Black.

I buy it as legit.

I mean, Michael Jai White was in The Dark Knight and is a cult favorite from Spawn and Black Dynamite. Jeri Ryan is infamous as Seven of Nine on Star Trek. It's not like these are unknowns or secondary stunt-people who got together to make a fan film, like the most recent Street Fighter fan film.

Didn't Ed Boon tweet that he thought about calling the next MK, "Violence of the Lambs" as a joke?

Kotaku has nothing to do with it. They just posted the video. That's what a blog-site/news site does when something newsworthy shows up on their doorstep. I expect this video to show up on Joystiq, IGN, and others very soon.

I'm very excited about this myself. I too felt that the plot and characters just got plain confusing and uninteresting after about mk2 or mk3 for me at least.
As long as Liu Kang has a sizable part in this all is well :)
Imagine if they hired Robin shou to play Liu Kang in another one of these videos, how awesome would that be?!

It definately looks interesting, I wasn't expecting this. Reptile's look disappoints me a bit if that's what they are going for, but I'm glad to see him as a total, evil bad ass.

Holy s#!t

I think this may be the new MK game trailer, like they did for FEAR with real actors. WHy? Because if it was a movie trailer, then they would have shown only different parts of the movie, not a complete scene. It looks darker than ever. Way more realistic too, like Reptile is born from a disease and Baraka is a psycho. They are starting MK from the very beginning right? I didn't expect it to be that realistic. grin I can't wait to see what the game is gonna look like.

Kotaku is a lot more probable to make posts about rumors or unconfirmed stories. They themselves don't claim they know for sure this is real either, so that being said we as a fansite try to make a point not to update on rumors. In the past we have, and when they turn out to be untrue people get upset about it.

After all the years bitching about how the franchise had gotten corny, stale and redundant. People change their stance bitching about its rewriting history, doesn't look the same, etc..

Its like what do people want from this franchise?

Can't they tell how convoluted the story had become and all the sideshow characters that went with it? They all started bitching about how it wasn't violent enough anymore and that the violence was too cartoonish.

I don't know I guess its just a rant on the people who can't seem to get their own way with this franchise but IMO its for the better to start fresh.

The same thing will happen to Resident Evil. When things get convoluted as they have with that franchise. That too will get a reboot.

Call it lazy, call it stale. Call it whatever but you can make the call that its going to happen.

I mean, that was amazing to watch.

But is it for a game or a movie?

Either way I now believe in WB.

Let me be one of the few to say...

This looks fucking terrible.

This isn't fucking Mortal Kombat. Not everything needs to be "realistic." When they said "back to the roots" I thought they meant back to the classic Kung Fu movie roots of the first game. Not fucking CSI: Outworld.

And why the fuck does Johnny Cage always get treated like shit?!

I don't doubt that this is at least somewhat real (actors do need to be paid after all). With that said, I definitely don't like the direction its headed in (not that I can even say that I've enjoyed MK for the past decade really). It seems to me that this is just a Resident Evil fighting game. It's taken the fantasy elements of the game and made them freakish and gritty. It just leaves me to wonder that even if this game is a reboot, will it even still remotely be the Mortal Kombat that most of us grew up with or are they just borrowing the character's names?

I watched the trailer a couple of times and, cheesy dialogue aside, I wouldn't have known what it was if there wasn't a great deal of name dropping. This seems like much more than a re-imagining to me. I've always liked the fantasy elements of the MK series because it anchored the fantasy so close to reality. I'm definitely not a fan of how that fantasy was eventually unraveled later on, but I think taking that element of the mystical away and replacing it with birth defected cannibals and a Rastafarian looking science experiment seems wholly unnecessary and more of a gimmick than anything else.

I wouldn't have objected to a grittier MK because I think for a series so filled with dark fantasy it should be gritty. This I just find to be completely unimpressive creatively. Whats to become of a game and characters so filled with a lush fantasy background...if the re-imagined Reptile and Baraka are just the beginning, then I think I can spend the $50 on something much better come release day.

Edit: Also, the Johnny Cage scene was just silly. Why would he suddenly stop fighting after a simple body slam and just resign himself to defeat and take a few puffs from a cigar? Really?

Dude....just watched it a few more times. I am in love. MK got stale and retarded after a while. This is exactly what it needs. That frame of sub zero is absolutely incredible.

Come on WB!!! Let this be real!

I don't care what this is for, whether it's for the game itself or if this clip is used for something else... I just laughed at the whole Baraka is a mad doctor thing... And that he has dreads... That made my day feel better! And this picture I have on my sig just looked so fucking cool!
