Because he is someone new. I don't think I'm the only one sick and tired of the same old bullshit that NRS has been giving us. I was really hoping this game would be a new beginning, but it hasn't looked that way since the first reveal. If the 2 reveals this week are Mileena and Shang Tsung, I'm going to be seriously disappointed.
MK4 Introduced a new antagonist, started a fresh story, and introduced 8 new characters
MKDA killed off the chief protagonist, started a new story, and introduced 11 new characters.
MKD started yet another new story, introduced a new chief protagonist, a new chief antagonist, and 7 additional new characters (9 total) as well as an expansive mini-rpg side mode adding much more plot to the game than any of the ones preceding it (whose plot was mostly told mostly in bios and endings), which as it happens, also introduced 2 entirely new realms to the franchise.
They're pretty much universally considered the franchises worst years, and the vast majority of the new characters introduced in those games are panned as some of the worst in the series. Most of them have been happily forgotten.
MK9 on the other hand had 0 new characters (save DLC Skarlet) and re-hashed the story of MK1, 2 & 3. It's the best selling and most popular game in the franchise.
Whenever I see people griping that MK needs a fresh start and needs to kill off the whole cast and start over... I don't understand how they fail to see that Netherrealm has already TRIED that... and it hasn't worked very well for them.
You know what happens when they give us new characters? People like 1 of them, hate 10 of them, and then we never see the vast majority of them again. (Until an Armageddon/Trilogy style game.)
PS. Street Fighter 3 also did the "90% new cast" thing, and people hated it. Which is why you almost never hear about Street Fighter III existing between 2 and 4. Because then IV brought back the cast of II in 3D and people LOVED THE BEJESUS OUT OF IT.
A little new blood is fine, but frankly, if only a third or less of the roster of MKX is new characters, I think it's a smart move on their part. The last thing they need is more guys like Hsu Hao, Jarek and Darrius cluttering up the canon.
When people are buying a game in a franchise they recognize, they want to see the faces they recognize. If they wanted a new cast, they'd play a different franchise.
