There is a lack of black in MK to address the topic sure, but this could hold true in Tekken, DOA, Street Fighter, etc. There's no point in arguing about it now, unless we make a new good fighting series.

That being said I will always keep my blacks we do have in mind.
Jax. Cyrax. Kai. Darrius. Jade. Tanya, Onaga, and Noob.

Want a great African American hero in MKX? We could use Spawn as a guest character in MKX. Mr. Al Simmons is underrated.

Powers include:
-Multiple demonic and elemental energy blasts
-Superhuman strength, speed, agility, and endurance.
-Quick Teleportation
-Shapeshifting
-A quick healing factor
-Flight
-Resurrection
-Immortality

Would he be a great fit in MK to help the lack of black? Sure. Probably over powering some of the cast. Will he make it? Nope(underrated).

Looking past race usually means not negatively stereotyping people because of their racial background.

Being bothered by a lack of non-white characters in many entertainment mediums, such as video games, is not contradictory to that sentiment at all.

This is the problem with all of that Stephen Colbert, "I don't see race/color" stuff. People say that, but what ends up happening is you get stuff that is overwhelmingly white and lacking in diversity. And I can tell you as a Sociology major it is a fact that we are shaped as individuals by the culture we are surrounded by, and it sends a bad message with how people of color are underrepresented in entertainment. Often when non-white characters are featured there is a tendency for them to be underdeveloped, a stereotype or just serve as a plot device for white characters or some kind of sidekick character.

You can't totally ignore race. In an ideal world, you could. It technically isn't even real from a biological standpoint. From a biological standpoint there is no such thing as "race"; unfortunately though it is very much real as a sociocultural construct. And when ignore it, things have a tendency to favor the culturally dominant group in a society and exclude others.
Slay a bit. It's this exactly.

A lot of these are questions of nationality and not race though. Just because the character is German doesn't mean he cant be black. Or French and Chinese. And I mean, we all know how threads wanting queer representation in MK goes.

Although with lizard people and bug people, crab people might not be too far off.

A lot of people react idiotically to suggestions like these, either because they are bigoted conservative idiots, or liberal idiots who want to believe we live in a post-racial world, and who seem to think developers just choose their characters' ethnicities and/or gender at random.

Sonya was created because the first game originally lacked a female character. Jax was created with the primary purpose of adding a black man to the roster. Nightwolf was certainly not designed as a Native American by accident. Nor was it a coincidence that Liu Kang, the Bruce Lee-type, was designed to be Asian.

So to people who always seem to throw a tantrum whenever someone suggest new characters to be a certain race, gender or sexual orientation, get the fuck over it.

I swear, if the first game hadn't had a female character, someone suggesting one for the second game would have been met with the same hostility.

How is it unreasonable for minority consumers to want to see people who look like them in the fiction they consume?

You know, I disagree with that mindset. Because it's exactly like catering to the majority, who are white straight guys, and who want to see people who look like them.

Do Black people with that mindset want to see more Native American characters? Do straight male Latinos with that mindset want to see more gay Arab men? How are they any less bigoted than white straight male masses who want protagonists who look like them?

"Relatability", heh. I actually love diversity. I want more diversity because it keeps things fresh, and because none of the races nor either genders nor any of the sexual orientations should get favorable treatment over one another.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. There was a lack of white in Def Jam: Fight for NY. Are we really so petty? Unfortunately, it seems like we are.

This is a fighting game, not a race rally or a meeting of the U.N. Race balance will probably never exist in a fighting game because it doesn't have to. The creators of the game will put in who they see fit to put in. That being said, I firmly believe that the black community will be well represented in this game.

It might not necessarily be a black American, because black people are from everywhere. Would there be a problem with a black Frenchman or a black Brit or a native Ugandan? This race debate is tired. I'm personally sick of it being brought up and it causes nothing but arguments, racist posts and just overall shitty behavior.

Jebus Christ, it's been a while since I've seen this character's name pop up.

As lackluster I thought he was, I would gladly appreciate seeing him over Liu any day.

That's not exactly the same thing, though, is it? When a majority group gets to see its face everywhere, all the time, the results are a bit different from when a minority group never sees theirs. It sends a message that some groups are "normal" when others aren't, and implies a subtle sort of disrespect to the kinds of faces that don't get shown.

It's normal to want to relate to characters who look like you, and it's not wrong to do that. The problem is that straight white people aren't exactly running out of places to find themselves, while minority people often very much are, and when that happens, it can be troublesome. It's a single mechanism that has different effects in different contexts.

Do Black people with that mindset want to see more Native American characters? Do straight male Latinos with that mindset want to see more gay Arab men? How are they any less bigoted than white straight male masses who want protagonists who look like them?

Many minority people like seeing other character of other minority groups. I know I do. It doesn't make anyone bigoted, just like it doesn't make straight white people who like to see straight white characters bigoted.

No one's going to get indicted as being a card-carrying racist because they didn't manage to notice that their chosen fandom isn't really representative and it happens to be so in their favor. That's a perfectly natural reaction, if a somewhat problematic one. It's just that minority people, by virtue of having being excluded a lot, are probably more likely to be less comfortable with it.

"Relatability", heh. I actually love diversity. I want more diversity because it keeps things fresh, and because none of the races nor either genders nor any of the sexual orientations should get favorable treatment over one another.

I agree with you there. I just believe that some groups do tend to get some pretty favorable treatment, and consciously favoring minority groups to counter that isn't a sin.

To start off, the skin color and/or race shouldn't matter. As long as the character is playable, balanced, and suits my playstyle, that kharacter is mine. Sure, the diversity is good, but as a proud Korean myself(yeah, asian), I don't get upset seeing there's no Korean kharacter in MK. This whole thread is getting way out of hand. skin color and race is a sensitive subject and it should NEVER be used to discriminate anyone. As a fan of Jax, and Darrius(I know, lot of people hate him, but he is in my top 15), I don't see what all these fuss going on about the skin colors, and lack of blacks in the game. Also, many of my best friends(though I don't have many friends) happens to be African Americans, and we are the best buddies.

Let's not turn this thread into some kind of racial discrimination thread or the thread that make fun of any ethnic group. This is NOT funny.

I hope the mod closes this thread. It's pointless.

Precisely. I wasn't listing any one category, be it race, nationality, or gender. We could throw skinny, fat, short etc. in there too. We need more little people!

The point was, there's a lot of minorities/groups or what have you, that could make the same argument or plea. Could you imagine if we had to appease all of them?

As you suggested, we could knock out a couple in one go, hell, let's shoot for 5 in 1! How about we get a overweight transgender black German little person. That's one step in the right direction. glasses
