Personally I'd be happy if everything (characters, backgrounds, soundtrack etc) was new.
Think of it from the point of view of the designers, it must nice for them to be handed a brief that asks them to create something entirely new instead of being asked to remake what they have previously done.

For you.
If you want what was previously offered, you have nine games to fall back on.

I think Ed had them frontload the new stuff to shock people.
Deception had 8 new characters on a roster of 24 (later expanded to 30 by Unchained)
I figure we'll get 8 to 10 on a roster of near-30 again.

I think its awesome what we have seen so far. Ushering in a new iteration of the franchise. Its very exciting stuff! I am feeling very anxious; worried about whether or not my favorite characters will return but anticipating the new story and fresh faces.

It's a bit surprising. I'm definitely were one of those people who were so fucking tired of the nostalgia rut we had been in for the past several games and just wanted as much new as possible. I wasn't quite sure we would get that so for Neatherealm to NOT play things safe and to actually focus on evolving the story(Not doing lame retellings of previous games) is something that I'm still trying to comprehend.. I didn't see it coming, but I welcome it with open arms.
I cannot wait to see the rest of the new characters including their origins and where exactly they fit into the story. There hasn't been one MKX newbie that I haven't liked so far.
That said, I do hope the next few characters announced are a few established ones. Mainly characters like Tanya, Fujin or Havik. I wouldn't be upset if most of the MK9 characters didn't find their way back.

I'm for lots of new stuff. We were expecting "the next genreation" after Armageddon. We've waited a whole console generation (the longest one at that). I'm MORE than ready.

I'm totally on board with NetherRealm's vision for this game. A more detailed re-telling of MK4 would have been the easy way to go, but instead they challenged themselves to make something entirely fresh. While I still think the games plot will touch upon Shinnok's invasion (early on), the fact that the story spans 25 years leaves the door wide open for anything to happen.
The new characters are friggin awesome so far! So much creativity involved and I like the fact that they're all different shapes and sizes unlike past games where only the bosses and sub-bosses were different (except Sheeva). And I need to mention I already have a crush on Cassie Cage.
The gameplay elements and different variations of characters harken back to the PS2 era with the different fighting styles, but this looks way more in depth. It's going to be a huge learning curve, but even competitive players should have plenty to keep them busy.
Fatalities and X-rays...WOW!!! This was just a taste and they are amazing! Can't wait to see more of them.
I'm happy so many of you are as hyped as I am about MKX!

I really see this game having 36 Characters
I love the new direction and the interactables are just the right amount
A very smart move for NetherRelm would be to make fan favorites playable as DLC. This way they don't affect the storyline but make all the fans happy.
24 x Characters to start
4 x Unlockable
8 x DLC
36 x 3 = 108 Variations!!!!!!

I saw a mention of the UI and Hud and overall presentation. I too really like the serious, bleak personality that the game is presented with. It's very ambitious and progressive for NRS.
That said, I think the Healthbars and Stamina meters need some adjusting. Right now they look good, but I'm not sure they are easy enough to read at a glance. I can definitely see there being some problems in tournament situations. If you're not right up on the screen, that shit kinda blurs together.
I know Maximilan said that he mentioned this to the devs at E3 so hopefully they take it under consideration.

Agreed. I'm betting 10 new characters, plus another one in DLC is most likely.
Like many here, I can only applaud what they're doing with the franchise. We just had a game that was basically one big tribute to the old characters, the old storyline and the old arenas. It's really time for something new.
But 'something new' is tricky. Deadly Alliance and Deception showed as much. It's not just a matter of adding new characters. You have to make sure that the new characters can stand on their own, and add to the universe. From what I can tell, even Ed Boon doesn't like many of the 'new' characters from those games. He makes fun of Hsu Hao, Mavado, Dhramin, etc etc. What's the point of bringing in new characters that even the devs aren't talking seriously? To me, it felt like many new characters were just that: new for the sake of being new. Only a few really stood out (like Kenshi, for example).
So far, the new characters that they have shown all have great potential and seem to fit in the world perfectly. I just hope that all new characters are like this.
And might I add that the 3 stages we've seen so far are oozing with flavor. This might just be the greatest MK yet. As they say: change is the spice of life.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'll be more excited for change when I see better new characters. I really don't like the ones we have now. The concepts themselves just aren't terribly interesting to me. A half-woman half-bug character is the last thing I wanted to see in MK. You can tell me to wait for the story, but the story isn't going to fundamentally alter the concept. Even if bug chick is the Amelia Earhart of female MK characters, you still haven't redeemed the concept.
I'm not against change on principle (though people are going to use that strawman; I've seen it a lot already), but I need better characters to get excited.
I love everything else about the game.

If we're talking visual, I like characters that bring together colors and elements in an interesting way. Ermac does that beautifully. It doesn't have to be bright primary colors either. Kung Lao is a good example of character who brings together a traditional look but shines with all sorts of personality.
D'Vorra is mostly, black, brown, and yellow... those are already hard colors to sell. Then I look at the character herself, and she's mostly nude with monster-esque qualities. She looks diseased. Unhealthy. The hairlessness adds to that. I truly don't think her design is BAD, but the concept doesn't ring with me (it does with others, and that's awesome. I'm not here to shit on anyone's likes or dislikes).
I'm not saying monster qualities can't work, but there needs to be a charisma to it. Goro is a good example of that. I see the monster, but I also see the asian warrior qualities. Havik as well. He looks like a zombie, but the undead elements don't shadow over the fact that he's a cleric. Everything works together.
The you have Torr/Ferra. If you look at their costumes, they're mostly covered with with leather, buckles, and clunky metal armor. It just doesn't look sleek to me.
Cassie and Kotal look alright. I'm not a big sonya fan, so the Sonya elements don't really know me over or anything.
If we're going with conceptual design, then I prefer characters who carry either historical, mystic, or other-wordly elements. That's the most interesting part of MK. Right now, Master Blaster looks like s/he's from the chaos realm, which is a plus... but it's a brute and a child/little person. By itself, I'm just not in love with that idea.

Personally, I'm hoping to see a new Shokan character. (I was actually thinking that it would have been funny if Torr was a Shokan to begin with. )
Shokans are so imbedded in MK lore, that it would make sense to have one. But on the other hand, people seemed to really despise Sheeva for some reason (not me, I loved her), so maybe NRS is staying away from the Shokans in this one.
You know what, I'm basically just taking things as they come. I have no specific wishes, except for my hopes that they spend enough time and effort to make every new addition to the roster memorable. So far, things are looking up.

I'll be honest, it's been a bit jarring, but I'm sure as we get closer to release it'll feel more right. I'm looking forward to seeing who gets showcased next.

I absolutely agree, I think Mortal Kombat X is the kind of game that we need to "go with the flow" with. This past week has already turned everything we expect from an MK on its head and has completely surprised us. I think if we keep expecting certain things we'll just end up disappoint. It's best to throw out all expectations and just enjoy the ride. I think we'd all be happier that way. I'll definitely be taking this advice myself.

I like all the new stuff. I think it was the right call at the right time.
I had some reservations at first glance about the way the new characters were presented but, looking at everything a couple more times, I have to consider how bad my reaction was to some of the previous new characters. Korbra? Mokap?
This is far better.

So far, everything is amazing. I feel like I did with MKII and Deadly Alliance. Its Boon and company turning everything on it's ear and taking us in a new direction.
So far my favorite newbie is Ferra/Torr. Yeah its out there, and yeah its a master blaster rip off, bit that's one of the reasons I love it. It reminds me of how the original MK cast came together. They took inspiration from the movies they grew up loving.
Cannot wait to play this game. I've already preordered the game like a freaking idiot.

Something like a phenomenon! Absolutely Ahh-Mazing! I'm stuck in my own head, like a maze, over it. I can't stop thinking about it. It's kind of pathetic just how much drive this gives me to get through every day just to hopefully see or hear an X-tra on this EPIC game of games. I say this about every time, but this iz THE Mortal Kombat (X) I've been waiting for! As many have said, it's time for big change as it iz WAY over due. They have been working on this for well over a year now & will finish, well, when they Finish IT!!! Oh, & Me too on wanting to start a neXt generation with C.C.!

Learning a new move set for my favorite character is where all the fun is at, to me. It's like feverishly unwrapping a present on Christmas morning. Personally, I'd be bored if *insert MK9 character* returned with the same, slightly tweaked move set. I can play MK9 for all that.
