I am full aware of all this, and yet I still don't think they will be playable. Just featured in the Story mode as punching bags.
While they turned Kano even better than before, Kano always got me interested in him because of the cybernetic stuff.
Doing the same to Sonya... Well I (as where I stand now) don't think i'll ever be satisfied with ANYTHING they come up with for Sonya, even if they turn her evil I won't buy her.
So I hope she gets DLC for her true fans, but for me personally, I always see her as slot-destroyers and most of all a Cassie destroyer for me personally, because I will like Cassie less with SOnya in it too.
I don't mind Cage that much.

I would hate it if Johnny and Sonya return as playable because:
1) They were in almost every MK so far.
2) The rooster is very limited to old characters, and having them in would mean no Kitana, Jade, Ermac or Noob.
3) Cassies storyline will be alot better without her parents constantly following her and babying her around.
Plus Sonya is one of my least favourite characters.

Jade/Kitana/Noob's chances of coming back are slim, so I don't think you'll have to worry about that. I sincerely doubt Netherrealm would opt for trivializing the death of their characters on this timeline as well.
They could come back as DLC, though. I dunno.

IMO a death should matter only if its a good death.
Having an unpopular character just show up and kill all popular and favoured characters with a couple of bitchslaps and with no dramatic effect is not a good death.
And BTW this is MK, death doesn't stop anyone. So Jade/Kitana/Noob all have a decent chance.

The German magazine that also confirmed Kano. They said that Ed Boon told them that Sonya, Johnny, and Liu Kang were all playable and that they had variations that reflected their different ages. That's too much information to be a misquote.
Why would they make three playable different variations of these three characters (that's NINE different models and fighting styles) if they weren't going to be playable in the roster?
If there are to be characters revealed at GanesCom, please let it be Sonya and Johnny for the sake of ending these speculated arguments.
It's getting quite tiresome reading the same thing over and over again... But that could also be said about a lot of other stuff that gets posted here.

I don't really believe the German magazine. They have given false information before. So I'm waiting for a confirmation from NRS to believe it.
I really hope the germans are mistaken for the Johnny/Sonya thing. I don't want character slots wasted on them.
Everyone should ask Ed about it on Twitter then, in an unbiased way. If enough people keep asking him I'm sure he'll cave and spill the beans.
I don't see the point though, beyond the fact that it's just logical for them to come back - the magazine said Ed confirmed them - AND went on to say their variations would feature different ages. That's specific information.
I'm sorry that these original characters don't live up to some people's standards (you know, the people who love the originality of palette swap ninjas).

I hope Sonya is in. I think it's dumb to leave her out simple because there's another blonde in the game who's her daughter, especially after the amount of palette swapped ninjas and other family members who've been in the same games before. Cassie hasn't shown a whole lot of moves shared with her mother aside from maybe her air throw and Sonya's beta arc kick from pre-release MK9 footage. Plus I'm dying to see how badass a 50-something year old veteran Sonya could be. Sonya still has unfinished business with Kano too and I definitely don't want that rivalry transferred onto her daughter. Give Cassie her own story elements.

The fact of the matter is: Johnny has been set up to become this all powerful being with untapped potential that in 25 years will most likely tap into this potential, making him basically a new character. (And I am sure his old moves will be highlighted in one of his variations)
But sonya has had no previous set up to grow. Cassie being in the game, makes me think sonya will be only a storymode cameo. Or at best a secret skin of Cassie's.

And Sonya could return as a mentally deranged, motorcycle riding, ghost whispering vigilante - if we're going by their endings.

I wouldn't say Johnny and Sonya would be wasted spots on the roster... but I'd rather they were given to other characters and have those two be left out.

Do you really think being alive or dead matters in this series? Please, explain why.
1. Using living characters for the Story Mode isn't the same as using characters who were killed off.
2. If Boon and Co. want to MK's plot to be taken seriously then it won't be filled to the brim with characters who die and show up later as if they didn't die. Why do you think A Game of Thrones won't have Lady Stoneheart in it?
3. A game with a roster around 30 isn't going to have every single character in MK9 along with over 10 newcomers.
