That trailer was a MINUTE long. Do you think that's all the game will have? Don't be thick, of course there will be brand new arenas and settings along with the classic ones. A reboot isn't something totally foreign, it takes older iconic elements and mashes it up with the NEW. There's no way you can sit there and just assume from a minute long trailer meant to get FANS attention that it will offer nothing else besides what was shown.

Besides, I'm talking about the STORY, nothing else. If the characters have new stories and motives and the overall story ignores the other eight(or seven) games in the series, then yes, I would call it a REBOOT in the story sense- which is what I've been talking about! A reboot in gameplay sense is a whole other story.

Why are you bringing up the rebirth trailer? What does that have to do with anything? Where did I say that a reboot would bring such drastic changes? Go back and re-read all the posts I made in this thread and you'll see that all I want-if it is a reboot- is to switch things up a bit. I'm not talking about turning Tanya into a video hoe or making Sub-Zero the king of pluto.confused

Once again, dude, you're judging from a MINUTE worth of footage. Are you kidding me?

Yeah, I'm being totally serious. The game'll have nothing but the exact characters and backgrounds we've already seen. That's it. Nothing else. Scorpion's not even in it, or didn't you know?

Read my post again. I used the trailer as an example of change. Nowhere did I say "the game should be completely different." By the same token, changing nothing but the story isn't my definition of 'shaking anything up'.

Now, then. The game very well could have brand new arenas and settings that they're not ready to show us yet...but I don't find that too plausible. Why not give us one little snippet of a new background or something? It would make for a more effective teaser. And a minute's worth of footage is actually quite a good deal compared to, say, the MKDA teaser. Nothing but Scorpion doing a kata and chucking a spear. That's a trailer that I couldn't judge a thing from. This seems like a pretty good indicator - not everything, obviously - we don't even see Scorpion - but it's quite a bit. And when you show me nine or so classic characters and more than a few stages I'm quite familiar with, virtually 100% of everything familiar ground, I'm going to say to myself, "well, sure looks like they're re-telling the first three games" rather than "Well, they're starting from scratch, but not really changing much". I can only judge from what I've seen so far. I may change my tune later.

The first idea holds a lot more appeal to me. Maybe you wouldn't expect something more drastic from a reboot, but I would. A reboot that does absolutely nothing but change the story is a pretty crappy reboot indeed, if you ask me.

After watching this trailer a few more times, I can honestly say that my opinion is getting worse with each viewing. That alone angers me, because I really wanted to like this game.

Honestly, the in game stuff shown so far looks like a gussied up XBLA or PSN game. It doesn't even look as good as MKvsDC.

The arenas are pretty, but the in game character models are small, stiff, and very last gen looking. Not to get too specific here, but some of the characters up close (okay, Johnny Cage) look downright hideous.

Seriously, Cage looks like he has a box for hair. What is this? A first gen PS2 game?

I know it's 9 months out, so I'm ABSOLUTELY holding out hope that they improve the visuals, but right now, I think that this looks incredibly plastic.

Oh and the gory fatalities? That Kung Lao fatality at the end has to be one of the dumbest things I've seen in MK this side of Quan Chi's neck stretch. So the hat's just... Spinning... In the... Ground...

?

It seems like a lot of the positive vibes are coming from where they might take this game. Since so much of what we see here looks like a refined version of the MKvsDC engine, old characters, backgrounds etc, it looks like it could be a reboot.

My biggest problem with that? What's the upside? Outside of reliving the past with a fresh coat of paint, which I personally don't need at all. I like my misty, water colored memories of 92 and 93 just as they are, thank you very much.

At best, this "MKvsDC without the DC" looking game is a compliment to what's already been done. A redundant cash-in for people that loved SF4's triumphant return and want to see MK "go back to its roots." Whatever the heck that means. That's like people saying "I want MK to be dark and gritty" but no one seems to be able to pin down what they want in that regard, only what they don't want.

I already loved MK1 and MK2 a long time ago. So if that's what this game is setting out to be, a sort of MK Trilogy with a next gen coat of polish, then the highest bar for me has already been met because those games have already been made.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not poo pooing the idea of MK going back to 2D, even if I'm not a fan of it myself. My point here is that there's nothing new here. No advancement in the timeline of the story or characters.

If we see a bunch of new characters and a new story, then I'll GLADLY stand corrected and my optimism for this game will increase ten fold. I want that so badly, in fact. But if this is just MK going old school at the expense of advancing the story, well, I don't see how many fans of this series wouldn't feel slightly jaded.

Of course, being a compliment to the old MK's is the best case scenario if this is in fact a reboot. The worst case is that they can completely crap all over what was considered by many to be the golden age of this series. If the story mode has that much depth, I can only wonder how much they'll change, how convoluted it might become or how flat out bad it could make the orignal games look if this is a retelling of the old tale.

I doubt we'll see Dr. Baraka, but I imagine we'll see a LOT of head scratching moments that don't even remotely agree with the original story.

So again, where's the upside? Well, profit, of course. 1UP basically described this game as "going the SF4 route." In other words, going back to 2D with the old characters, because that's what people know and nostalgia sells.

I can only hope and pray that E3 reveals something interesting about this game. ANYTHING. New characters, exciting FIGHT related modes, a new story... Something that makes me think that this isn't some weak sauce cash in game that basically took MKvsDC, removed the ability to move in 3D and replaced all the DC characters with "classic" MK characters that weren't valid enough to make it on to the VS roster.

Because so far, I haven't seen anything to refute that last statement. Not by a long shot, in fact.

Some of the models, tbh, look like skins from MK vs DC (ex. Sub-Zero). God, Shao Kahn is practically the same!

Gameplay looks pretty fast. Tag team looks great.

Thanks for pointing that out. It is a little bit better, but I agree, I'm REALLY hoping that they can put a nice coat of polish on this game in the next 9 months. I remember MKvsDC's trailer, thinking that it looked terrible as well. The final product still wasn't on the level of the current fighters that were out at the time, but it was still of dramatic improvement over what I saw originally.

Here's hoping we see that big coat of polish, and that we really start to see something NEW in regards to this game at E3!

Has anyone here ever played around in the character bios in MK vs DC? Where you can zoom in and spin and look at the character models, like the trophies in Smash Bros?

They're actually spectacularly detailed and you can absolutely tell they're current gen, HD textures and whatnot.
Not that you actually NEED to do this to see those details. They're actually fully visible in the character renders Midway released years ago and everything else. I'm just saying maybe people would be saying less ridiculous nonsense like "this looks like PS2 graphics" if they took a deep breath and slowly looked over close-ups. You don't have pores and goosebumps and freckles and teensy tiny little dogtags that you can still read the teensy tiny little "Lt. Sonya Blade" letters on a PS2. That's just science.

Didn't the press release say they have a new graphics engine? I'm sure it will be an improvement on MKvsDC, which I think looked good anyway.

I do agree that Johnny looks particularly awful in the trailer, though. That dude can't ever seem to get a break (unless it's his neck). tongue

I will say after watching the trailer a few times...I'm optimistic. The gameplay looks like it's going to be fun. Sorry to break it to everyone, but that does look like klose kombat to me. The graphics are alright at the moment, given the 9 months they have left, they should be able to polish it pretty well. Tag team looks like it'll be fun. Fatalities should be pretty great(I noticed someone point out the spinning hat planted in the ground, and...well, this is mortal kombat, suspension of disbelief is necessary to properly enjoy it).

The game going back to it's roots is an interesting place to take the series. As someone that has honestly enjoyed the story for a long while(despite the ups and downs) I'm pretty dissapointed that the gigantic cluster fuck from Armageddon will never fully.....what do you do with a cluster fuck anyway?

The story and timeline of this entry is what has me worried the most. Will history be rewritten? Will this just kind of be a reestablishment of the basics and leave everything past MK3 open for reinterpretation? If so, what happens to the post MK3 characters like Quan Chi, Havik(a personal favorite of mine), Nitara, Kenshi, etc. Which Sub Zero is this? haha...confusion.

Other than the problem I listed...I'm excited.

Side note...wow, this is the first time that an MK game won't arrive within two years of the last one. Hopefully that is a good sign and shows WB's commitment to the series. Give it the time it needs and deserves, and hopefully good things will happen.
This game currently looks awesome, Though it seems like MKT or MKA(All the classic characters with as many features as possible). The only thing i'm afraid of is this game getting banned in NZ. The Fatalities look cool & it has good graphics as well but without a fighting stick it'll all go to waste.grin

I don't want to argue with anyone, so I'll just say that I can't imagine people not liking what they saw in this trailer. People who say MKvsDC didn't match up to other fighters visually don't know what they're talking about, at all. MKvsDC was fantastic visually. You want to talk about character models looking fake? Excuse me? Games like Soul Calibur look as fake as any other, with shiny character models out the ass. Seriously, don't be so picky. It's very discouraging to see nothing but negative posts on this site over and over again. I don't mind opinions but it's mostly just pure negativity. It's sad that I have to constantly remind myself that I'm on the MK boards and not the Tekken boards.

Ok, so since I'm not here to argue and I want to keep the positive vibes going, I think it couldn't look any more perfect for a teaser.

Something I really wanted to point out though, is that part with Johnny hitting Sub and it's zooming in and showing the bones break, I'll bet anything I own that that is 100% a BRUTALITY. If not, it's ABSOLUTELY one of cage's fatalities.

Pay close attention. It happens in the trailer at the same time that the pit and kung lao's finishers are shown, back to back to back.

The DEAD giveaway? Right before it zooms in to show Cage start breaking his bones, the screen goes dark.

Trust me, that's either a brutality, or one of Cage's fatalities. I'm banking on brutality, and if it is, what an ingenious and cool idea and way to re-create the brutality. Showing the bones break? Awesome. If you slow it down, you'll see not only the bones getting hit and blood coming out, but it shows them breaking. It shows the jaw fracture in the face shot, and the ribs crack in the gutshot.

C'mon guys, it's NOT close combat. It's some sort of finisher, one way or the other. What happened to all you smart and intuitive guys who screencap every little detail and break down the trailers? Unless this has been stated before, you guys missed it bigtime.

It's a finisher, my vote goes brutality. And it looks amazingly fucking cool.

Just a reminder, a while back boon tweeted asking the fans if we'd rather have brutalities or animalities. This game is going to have more than just pits and fatalities, and maybe even friendships. It's' pretty obvious at this point.

That is correct, but...

how much are tiny details worth when in the -supposedly- fast gameplay you barely register them? Usually details need to be recognizable first I think.

Granted looks a bit more refined than MK vs DC, but if this is the Unreal T. 3 Engine it is not top notch. But I never expected Midway to do the same thing with it like Valve did with the Quake 2 motor in Half-Life...

I think graphics are a big factor in fighting games, less so than in RPGs, or RTS games for example.

Also, everyone needs to make sure they don't just watch the youtube/gaming site linked videos even if they SAY 720 or 1080p. Download the 550mb file from MortalKombatOnline, or google for it and download it from somewhere else faster.

If you have the real full trailer, the game actually looks smooth as silk buttery, and is visually quite impressive for as early as it is in the development cycle with so much time left. Quite the opposite of what people are saying.

It's kind of supposed to be "top story" not "banner" really. A story is given that status when we don't want it falling off the front page, and given the news we're expecting soon from E3 and such we still want to have this trailer on the front. I'm just thinking it isn't big or flashy enough perhaps. If you think it seems second class to the website newslead then yeah, obviously we have some sort of problem because that's not the intention of it at all.

MK vs Dc looked okay. Not revolutionary or beautiful, it was okay. That you liked it doesn§t automatically make it true that it is the highest quality.

I have been thoroughly desensitized to violence, so what this trailer brought us barely registers on my radar.

That is my problem, the more I watch it, the less appealing this becomes: there is nothing new enough in it for me.

Possibly because you're blind. Daegon and Taven are in the background of the Pit II, surely as just an "easter egg", but the others are nowhere in sight.

I'll have to wait to see more before I really judge this. 2D gameplay should be interesting I guess. I'll certainly be disappointed if they don't use any post-MK4 characters.

Owned? Question is: how do post-MK4 characters filter into this, if this is a remake?

Owned?

Hardly...
