Actually there's very strong evidence that moving forward won't sell very well anymore because most people don't know enough about MK's story or are confused by how complicated it's gotten that they simply won't follow it any longer. I can't count the number of times I've seen someone say the reason they liked the idea of that stupid Rebirth movie reimagining everything was because "MK is too convoluted".
Going back and telling the story in a clear and linear fashion with no "what if" endings and new characters to confuse them will give old fans who left the series a chance to catch back up, and potential newbies to the franchise a chance to understand just what the hell is going on.
That way, the next time you introduce Fujin or Kenshi to them, they might actually give a shit because they didn't lose interest when you were introducing Sheeva and Kabal to them this time, like they did back in '95.
it's like how you have to teach a child to add and subtract before you can teach him to multiply and divide. Some people apparently need an MK 101 course.

This trailer is orgasmic. A new 2D Mortal Kombat. If you're bitching, go fucking die in fire.

I'd read a great MK comic book or watch an animated movie that elaborates on all that cool stuff but the games have been dangling a cliffhanger since 2006 and nostalgia only breaks the knee caps of these games. Move forward and get that right first, eh?

The problem is that no such thing exists as a great MK comic book. Even the ones written by Tobias, while fun, weren't much more than quick intro points.
And every single incarnation of the franchise tells a different story. None of them official, and all of them way off the mark. I've about everything from a combination of Kung Lao and Kano who was made of smoke lead Shang Tsung to an amulet, I've watched watching Liu Kang jump over a box fifteen times, I've read about Noob Saibot helping Baraka protect a baby.
Screw it. It was all fun, but screw it. I'd really like to see what actually happens.
The games may have been dangling on a cliffhanger since 2006, but only vague details and blurbs of text have covered the events of the old MK games since...well, since they were released.
To boot; if they're planning on continuing on after MKA, I'd really prefer that they take as much time as possible, years if necessary, to design new characters, environments, and craft a new story. The plotline as it stands now is in shambles; I'd rather they supported the foundations before they decide to go on building extensions to this old slaughterhouse. I'm fine with them taking as much time as they need to decide who gets offed for good from MKA and who comes back; the more time they take, the better the chances we'll get new characters who get universally accepted like Kenshi was, and fewer clumsy attempts to make new folks interesting by basing entire games around them - looking at you, Taven.
So what if we have to wait a while before MKA gets resolved? We're still getting a new game every few years or so. Imagine how those poor Double Dragon fans feel. :(

Wouldn't the trendy mature and realistic thing to do be a 'relevant info bio' or brief spoken exposition that offers only what's important, rather than a nostalgic dump of fanwankery that will probably miss or reinterepret some piece of fiction in ways you won't like anyway?

Hold on, you're obviously not understanding where I'm coming from. When I say "Let's move forward", I'm not talking about picking up after Armageddon. If this is indeed a REBOOT, then I want this to be as if they've wiped the slate clean, meaning the game will be about our favorite warriors(with BRAND NEW STORIES AND MOTIVES) fighting in a tournament. This will hopefully lead to a new story in which the sequels to this reboot can further develope . I think it's time to wave goodbye to the original story and just start off anew, which is what I hope "Mortal Kombat" will be.
So if they're going with my theory, everything before this game will be irrelevent and the "newbies" won't have to know anything about the older games to understand this one.
There's a difference between REBOOT and RE-TELLING my friend. A reboot represent a clean slate, a new start, a new canon. Which obviously you and several others would be opposed to since you just want to rehash the same old shitty plots.
GhostDragon "Tis true my form is something odd, But blaming me is blaming God. Could I create myself anew, I would not fail in pleasing you. If I could reach from pole to pole, Or grasp the ocean with a span, I would be measured by the soul, The mind's the standard of the man."

Nobody reads bios but us the diehards.
What casual gamers WILL do though is watch FMVs. Put your story completely in FMVs and everyone will know your story.

I never said that's what I "wanted", I said that is what this game is shaping up to be.
. Even if this did pick up after Armageddon; Your arguement still doesn't make sense.
MKDA was a fresh start too and no one needed to be re-fed the stories of MK1-MK4. Besides, I think it's only us die hards that even care about the stories in the first place, which makes them giving us a page by page "re-telling" of older games pretty damn pointless/stupid. You don't want to continue or start over, you just want to live in the past.
Fighting engine looks clunky, graphics already look dated and animation looks like a very early 360/ps3 game.
This game will fade into the shadows quickly once E3 starts.
Not the game I was hoping for its going to get killed once capcom show marvel vs capcom.

No it's not. Vogel's writing this time. When they actually let Vogel do his job, he has never gotten it wrong. And as I've said repeatedly already, the leaked casting sheet totally follows the canon in its character descriptions.
There's more evidence right now that it's gonna be a retelling than a complete start-over.
And for the record? You're lying right now. You absolutely DID say that's what you wanted. In fact, your exact words were "I want this to be as if they've wiped the slate clean". Look! There's the words "I want" right there! How the hell did you think you could get away with that when the post you're lying about is still on the same page? Did you really think I'd have forgotten something I read less than ten minutes ago?

You do know that the game isn't being released until next year, right?
And that most MK games look pretty rough when they're FIRST shown. We still have a whopping 8 months until release.

Where was it written down that a reboot can't have anything from the original canon?
A character's personaility does not prove anything. I'll believe it when the PLOT is actually released and we actually get some bios.
I guess I better get prepared for your whining when your heart is broken.

If this is a REBOOT and not a re-telling, then it'll bring us fresh new stories and motives, which is what MK NEEDS!
You can save all this petty stuff for fanfiction.

Fresh new stories and motives from the exact same cast, in the exact same locations, in the exact same settings - just like this trailer's shown us? If this was to be a reboot...why even bother if everything was going to be the exact same except the story? I wouldn't exactly call that 'going forward'.
A reboot wouldn't screw with the established characters and settings to an extent as to make them unrecognizable - like a certain film pitch I could mention - but it would certainly take a few chances and shake things up here and there. I see little to none of that going on in this trailer.
If this game is a reboot like you want, I hope you're ready for the most mediocre, boring, predictable relaunch of a series ever. NEW! IMPROVED! RECOGNIZABLE!
And Scorpion getting his revenge on Sub-Zero...petty? Nah.

Awe.... no Sindel =-(
They shoulda used Sindel instead of Nightwolf >=-(
But I gotta admit it does look really good.
I knew they were gonna attract the fans once disappointed by the T for Teen rating in MKvsDC by fueling it with sheer disgusting brutality, and I was ready to see their pathetic attempt at it and shake my head in disappointment.
......
But then I see Kung Lao about to slice Sub-Zero's balls in half (which made me all tingly inside) and then knew they weren't fucking around.... they want their fans back BAD.

Old and dated? More like refined.
It looks to play like MK2 on steroids.
It has online co op.
The fatalities look original and cool and haven't been since mk4.
Graphically some parts look identical to mk vs dc yet others like the part showing sector vs mileena on the living forest stage blow it away. The game isn't coming out for at least 8 months.

That trailer was a MINUTE long. Do you think that's all the game will have? Don't be thick, of course there will be brand new arenas and settings along with the classic ones. A reboot isn't something totally foreign, it takes older iconic elements and mashes it up with the NEW. There's no way you can sit there and just assume from a minute long trailer meant to get FANS attention that it will offer nothing else besides what was shown.
Besides, I'm talking about the STORY, nothing else. If the characters have new stories and motives and the overall story ignores the other eight(or seven) games in the series, then yes, I would call it a REBOOT in the story sense- which is what I've been talking about! A reboot in gameplay sense is a whole other story.
Why are you bringing up the rebirth trailer? What does that have to do with anything? Where did I say that a reboot would bring such drastic changes? Go back and re-read all the posts I made in this thread and you'll see that all I want-if it is a reboot- is to switch things up a bit. I'm not talking about turning Tanya into a video hoe or making Sub-Zero the king of pluto.
Once again, dude, you're judging from a MINUTE worth of footage. Are you kidding me?

This game already looks and seems to play a bit like Shaolin Monks and then to top it all off they rip a fatality straight out of that game and incorporate it into this one. Give me strength!!
Well this was such a welcome surprise after that fucking abominable live action trailer that made me want to throw up in disgust.
Hell yes. Let's see...
1. Classic characters. Check.
Reptile looks pretty good so far. It also looks like he actually spits acid this time instead of the puke ball they called his acid spit in mkda and mka. Please let's get a forceball this time.
Sektor looks pretty cool. Ditto for Mileena. It's also great to not have that Dark Raiden bullshit either. What horrible character development that was.
2. Classic arenas. Always good to have the Deadpool and Kahn's arena back. Plus my all time favorite The Living Forest. They all looked pretty solid from what I could tell.
The only cons I could see were that the characters still look a little stiff and cartoony. They've been that way since mkda. C'mon guys. Fix that already.
Other than that it looked like they were on the right track at least.
Please keep the toilet humor out of it too. No puking or farting. Please.

Theres still time but the japanese developers are going to be very strong at e3.
Capcom made street fighter 4 a big success by making the game fresh with a whole new graphics engine and look while retaining the classic gameplay.
This looks like a ps2 game seriously.
I see nothing about it that makes me think wow.

Only a little thing but...
I really wish they'd have the character fall and splat against the ground when they fall off The Pit II. We've seen the spike thing in pretty much every game, and it's boring now.
The MK2 one was simple, but brutal.
