Mileena is back =) I'm happy
I did wish I could see more facial expressions or more personality when the characters walk and fight, cuz they do look very stiff as always.
but
it looks great! The classic characters are back and thats ALWAYS the best way to go =) I love the darker atmosphere and I hope the music improves! But overall, I'm excited!
I'm gonna throw a party now! i <3 Mileena! holla!

I'm certainly not disappointed at the prospect of a fully 2D game but it does bug me a little bit that they keep trying to reinvent the wheel with each game's engine. MK vs. DCU had a perfectly solid skeleton that they could have refined into something really good. Now maybe they're just taking the 2D part of that and ditching the 3D aspect, which is fine. But I'm afraid that they'll produce another perfectly solid skeleton but never have the chance to refine it because they'll start from scratch again with MK10.
The series needs some more consistency with respect to the basic mechanics.

Just for argument's sake, here's the entire roster of MK Trilogy:
Johnny Cage
Kano
Raiden
Liu Kang
Scorpion
Sub-Zero
Sonya
Reptile
Goro
Shang Tsung
Kung Lao
Jax
Kitana
Mileena
Baraka
Smoke
Jade
Noob Saibot
Kintaro
Shao Kahn
Sektor
Cyrax
Sheeva
Sindel
Stryker
Kabal
Nightwolf
Motaro
Ermac
Rain
Now here's a list of characters who were in MK vs DCU, and thus they don't have to do much work on to have in this game assuming it is the same engine just upgraded a bit, which is what it looks like:
Scorpion
Sub-Zero (already shown in the trailer)
Raiden (In the trailer)
Liu Kang
Kitana
Sonya
Jax
Kano
Baraka
Shang Tsung
Shao Kahn (In the trailer)
Quan Chi (finished but never released DLC)
Here's the list of "new" or freshly made characters shown as playable in the trailer:
Johnny Cage
Reptile
Kung Lao
Mileena
Sektor
Nightwolf
Also, Jade and Cyrax were on the leaked casting sheet.
So who's still missing yet for them to actually have a remake of MK1 thru 3 fully completed by next year?
Goro
Kintaro
Sheeva
Motaro
Smoke
Noob Saibot
Sindel
Stryker
Kabal
Ermac
Rain
Only 11 characters. Not too bad. Although the question left over from Armageddon of "Can they figure out how to make a centaur work this time?" does present itself.
I also wonder if Old Shang will just be an alternate costume or if they'll have to make him a completely seperate character from young Shang.

There's a good possibility because it's 2D, but it's also 3D at the same time soooo.....prolly not.
Also, does anyone wanna see maybe one or two new characters brought in via DLC, like characters possibly mentioned at various points during MK's storyline but never made it as a main series character?

I wonder if this is going to be episodic. Like all the characters will be playable in the vs. mode but the story mode will cover the first three games in their entirety featuring characters as they're introduced.
Maybe MK9 really will simply be called "Mortal Kombat" to hammer that point home?

You were bred from stupidty werent you?
If I was "blind" I wouldn't have spotted them in the arena in the first place.
Easter eggs are nice, but why would you throw in those trashy characters in the background if this game is a reboot? If they're only in there because of the trailer and it was a last minute slop job, I should have expected that from the MK Team.
Kenshi can been seen at 00:27
Daegon can eb see at 00:27 as well
Reiko and Daegon again CLEARLY at 00:58
Kira can be CLEARLY seen at 0:59
Li Mei's feet can be seen at 1:00
Wow... possibly because you're blind?

Owned? Question is: how do post-MK4 characters filter into this, if this is a remake?

Okay so I've cooled down a bit. Man, I can't believe how perfect this is for me. It is exactly what I wanted from what I can see from the trailer. Taking MK back to it's roots.
Plus Subby and Cage are in it! Bring back Kenshi and my excitometer will explode.
What this game needs is a roster of 24 characters. Enough for fan favorites and a couple of new characters. No more than that. And for the love of god, do not put every character in the game.
Here are the confirmed playable characters so far:
Johnny Cage
Sub Zero
Reptile
Nightwolf
Mileena
Kung Lao
Sektor
Raiden and Kahn are likely to be added to this list

We're not sure how far they're taking the "reboot". It might simply mean back to basics gameplay and style. It doesn't necessarily mean they're completely destroying everything the last 5 games have brought to the table.
Either way, characters fighting off in the distance is not exactly game breaking.

Look, it's real simple.
Sonya and Kano can't be chained up at Kahn's Arena because they're gonna be playable and it'd look kinda dumb to play a Sonya vs. Kano fight on the Kahn's Arena stage and have the characters be two places at once.
So instead, they're using characters from the future games as a silly gag, like in the Prison stage from Deception.
And then they did the same thing for Pit II just for fun and since Hornbuckle was never real anyway, he was just a green Liu.

: What did they do to Reptile? I mean it's not terrible i suppose...Y'know actually, he looks like they should have just put the mask on him.
: looks like the unreal engine again, but it does look faster than MKvsDC. So that's good.
: I know I didn't see Klose Kombat, did I? That part where Cage is punching Sub-Zero.....I wonder what that's all about.
: The whole thing looks like a MK Shaolin Monks sequel. Which is good, but I hope there is a Konquest mode//Story mode in addition to what we see here.
It looks good but I'm interested in seeing what they do with the story considering the characters that are visible in this trailer.
:: I hoped for a more sinister or dreadful approach to the art style(like that Vincent Proce stuff we saw), but since they stuck with what worked for MKvsDC, I'm not mad at all.
:: I can't tell what they're doing with the fighting engine, but it looks like a streamlined version of what MKvsDC brought us. Which is also good. I don't see any goofy interruptions in gameplay aside from that part where Cage is punching Sub-Zero. But I hope that's not another iteration of "close combat".
As I mentioned, I like that they seem to have incorporated that sort of tag feature. That's gonna be fun as hell. Idk if I like actually being able to tag in and out though. I know back in the day i appreciated being stuck with the one character until you loose with them, blowing up, and immediately having that back-up character to keep the match going...
:: Graphics look good, but again, I hoped for a more dreadful appeal (wet...nasty...dirty). This is fine though. This style still seems a bit too refined and sharp for what I hoped for. Same way i felt about MkvsDc.
:: Johny Cage's Tatoo is kinda...bleh. I'd get rid of it by release.
Raiden looked....normal. Sub-Zero.... normal. Sektor looks awesome. Nightwolf made it in (why in the hell does he have that lightning strike again....i know, i know...he's always had some bolt thing since the beginning but i still think he has tremendous potential elsewhere inside of his character. I still believe that move, in that capacity should be one of Raidens)? Anyway Nightwolf looks...normal. Mileena looks good and normal....ect
Y'know I think that's just it...they all look regular. I mean it's fine being that way, but I hope for some awesome content pertaining to each individual character since this is so. Just so we have a chance to really re-engage with these very familiar character designs again.
Since they have their very familiar, very classic looks to them, it seems like alternate costumes are a shoe-in. One to two alternates in addition to what is in the trailer seems good to me. BTW, I personally do not prefer to be manipulating MK characters alternate costumes, I want the developers to but their artistic experimentation to work here. "Show me what you got...." essentially. I want to "discover" that part, I don't wanna make it myself.
I think it's a waste of good energy to put that sort of mechanism in the game for us just to switch around the main characters looks. Leave the creating for our personal created characters, if that's a feature that makes it in. I think that would be a perfect compromise. To where we can't manipulate the "official roster", but we can go to town on our own created characters. Yea....
==
Need to wait to see more from the game, but it looks good though. I will say, this is probably what they should have come with in place of MKvsDC. This is something akin to what I expected around that games release. That's why i was so disappointed.
This looks good for creating momentum for more demand for more MK stuff, and reestablishing faith in the franchise. Which is also something I thought they'd need to do with MK9. So I'm in.

It takes many, many years to make a good video game. We're used to them doing it in 2 because Midway was a terrible studio that rushed unfinished products out the door. Now that they're working for an operation with some REAL money like WB, they can afford to actually take their time and polish things.
My feelings are mixed.
I like the way combos look, some kind of mixture of Shaolin Monks and MKvsDC. It's good to see a tag mode brought in, finally a new FIGHTING mode, not a mini-game mode.
Kung Lao's fatality on Sub-Zero is absolutely fantastic and Sub-Zero's ice-sword stab looks cool. Sektor rocks! It's nice to see characters like Sektor and Nightwolf, who aren't among the most popular MK characters, playable and showed in the very first trailer and at the same time I'm glad that there's no Scorpion, Sonya, Jax and Liu Kang.
Hopefully other characters shown in the backgrounds will be playable too, especially Reiko and Kenshi. Unfortunately, my hopes aren't high for that to happen since they're all in their MKDA-MKA outfits. They seem to be there just to pose as decorations.
The characters still look a bit plastic, but I'm not obsessed with graphics, that's good enough for me, but the lame design of Johnny Cage (I don't know what's worse, his tattoo or his belt) is not good enough. He deserved that fatality on him.
Like Xia, I'm also disappointed with the choice of characters. Reptile, Johnny Cage, Shao Kahn (again!)... Thank God I didn't see Liu Kang, Jax and Sonya, but I'm sure they'll come sooner or later. Considering they showed Raiden in his classic look, I'm very much afraid that they'll ignore Fujin once more. Sad... I too am worried that they'll portray Kitana as bad as they did in MKvsDC and MKSM, assuming they bring her back which they probably will.
Anyway, the fighting looks good I have to say, Sektor, Kung Lao and Sub-Zero rock. The blood looks good, it's not exaggerated as it used to be. I just hope they bring in more characters from MK4-MKA and of the oldies, Ermac and Kitana.
My biggest fear is, considering how the trailer starts, that they'll continue that shit from MKvsDC about Raiden and Shao Kahn being brothers.
So, overall, I won't lie, I am excited but at the same time trying to keep my hopes as low as possible, mainly because of the characters they showed- too many classic ones in the forefront. I know, I just know they'll piss on Fujin again and leave him out... :(

I'm loving the new teaks they've made on certain characters special moves. I also love the facthat we now have 2 vs 2 kombat and I love the fact that we now have an assist option like in the Capcom versus games. That's going to add a new element to the fights somewhat. Kung Lao's Fatality looks awesome too.
I'm so glad Raiden and Kung Lao are back amongst others. It is looking to be a reboot which is disappoitning but we'll have to wait and see what's announced over the next few months.
I noticed that some are wondering why Kenshi, reiko etc are there. I was thinking that perhaps this'll be homage to the MK2 of sortts where you had those 2 fighters on the bridge in the background. Also, witht he chained up characters, it could again be like MK2 and also MKD where the non playable characters are kept prisoner.
Perhaps in a twist, we'd be able to unlock them by breaking their chains or crossing over to the other bridge and meet them.
I'm actually very excited now! I can't wait to see what's in store.

I can't believe I'm actually saying this. But compared with this Trailer and the MK Pitch Trailer. I am actually more interested in the Movie.
Don't get me wrong I'm still really looking forward to MK9, But I'm just really apprehensive about it.
I hope that the footage is from a very early build of the game. As it just looks like Mk vs DC without the DC characters and with a non-fixed camera angle.
My biggest upset however is the lack of Grit and a Dark art style. It is still way too plastic and CARTOONY. Especially considering that Boon was stated saying this game would be very Dark and gritty. It is definitely lacking an edge.
I will however withold my concrete judgement until E3. Hopefully this footage is old and a newer, darker styled build is to be showcased at E3.
Reptile and especially Johnny Cage looks horrendous however the others look fairly good.
Not too sure what to think of the damage indicators with the muscle and skeletons yet. Looks rather tacked on.
E3 can't come any quicker...

I can't tell what they're doing with the fighting engine, but it looks like a streamlined version of what MKvsDC brought us. Which is also good. I don't see any goofy interruptions in gameplay aside from that part where Cage is punching Sub-Zero. But I hope that's not another iteration of "close combat".

I hope that too. Close combat and free-fall combat were both awful.
