Nope. There definitely is blood in the trailer. Most visible after a couple punches and special moves. It just dissapears mid-air. It's ridiculous. The blood does look better. But it still doesn't seem right.

It's there, but I highly doubt that's all the blood we'll get.

That's because this looks like it's going to be the GOOD kind of remake. The kind Shaolin Monks said it was gonna be but turned out to be lying.

The kind where they don't change shit just for the sake of change, they just tell it the way it already was, just in cinematic form so we can have more details.

Keeping the canon is a beautiful thing and anyone who doesn't like it can go back to the Rebirth topic and hope that ugly looking horror movie gets made.

There's no proof of that.

It's obvious there WILL be changes since this isn't a game just about MK1. It's also about MK2 as well as MK3. Seems like they're going to some how merge all three stories into one ultimate one. Changes will be made.

There is a little proof, actually. All of the character description blurbs on the leaked casting sheet were totally accurate to the canon, except for the one that described Kung Lao as an impulsive jerk.
So I find it more likely they'll just tell the story from the island tourney to the Outworld tourney to the invasion linear-ly rather than some messed up attempt to combine things to rush it through like the movies did, judging from Ed's quote that it's going to be an extremely long and complex story mode.

Baraka, Xia, you're not alone. A reboot is not what I was expecting, nor wanting. For over a year now, Boon's been going on about how he wants as much newness as possible in this game, yet I don't feel as though I saw anything new. I don't feel like this was the injection of life the MK franchise needed. From the looks of it, they're playing it safe and milking MK2 again.

I was hoping to see the story/characters progress after MKA. The post MK3 characters we do see seem more like little easter eggs than anything that's specifically meant to indicate this game takes place after MKA.

And I swear, if that half naked, sex-slave reclining by Kahn's throne is supposed to be Kitana... furious

If they wanted to remake MK1 -3, that's fine. Do something ala' Bionic Commando: Rearmed. I'm all for nice updates like that. The key thing with Bionic Commando though, was that the remake was supposed to supplement the big sequel. So everyone got to catch up on the game that started it all some 20+ years ago, and get an awesome sequel to boot. With MK it looks like we're just getting the rehash and nothing else.

*sigh*
Goddammit, MK Team.

Insecure much?

You know, I really tried to hold it in, but the moment you opened with Nolan's style being dark and gritty I had to shake my head and smile.
To each his own. Quality in art is relative. You won't make my sleep harden by protesting against my choice. I suggest you rather enjoy the new Mk and not think of me in this context.

So you think that they're retelling the same story (only using cinemas this time) and it would appear that they're using the same old characters (that are wearing the same or similar costumes), same or similar backgrounds, gameplay that looks very similar to MKvsDC (though with a regression back to complete 2D gameplay only) and you think that this is good?

Again, I hate to be a downer here, but can someone explain to me why SO MANY people are so hyped about a game that appears to offer almost nothing new at all? Kung Lao's throwing his hat in the living forest, Johnny Cage is doing his high kick to Sub Zero in the dead pool, Shao Khan taking on Rayden...

I mean, we played all of this before already. Sure, the combo system looks more refined, the graphics are more modern (though the in game graphics look very PS2-ish, I'm assuming that'll get fixed in time), we have a new tag mode, but what is it about this trailer that has people so excited? I'm not being fecitious here, I'm really curious, because I just don't see it yet. Help me out.

No, I just want to make sure that if the team goes checking the public reaction on the net, they know that they have strong support from the fans who know what MK is really about, and not everyone fell in love with Doctor Baraka the human in a t-shirt and jeans.

How do you know it would a messed up attempt?

I highly doubt this game will simply tell the events of MK1-MK3 without changing anything. If that's the case then what's the point? They might as well not even give it a story. I'm not asking for them to drastically change anything, but for the love of God switch it up! I don't want this game to be MK1-MK3 in a new shiny package.

Even if the plot is basic- "Warriors fighting in a tournament" I'll be fine with it as long as the characters motives and objectives are switched up a bit.

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT MK WAS GOING TO LOSE IT'S WAY!!!... They get right back to making the same old, same old.

It actually is a product utilizing the Mortal Kombat IP, so that much is a blessing. Shame we've got right back to the familiar old redundancies initiated by the MK fanbase, back when they were at least sensical in their confused and misguided whims.

Fear of change? Ha!
Heaven forbid we go back to the progress of MKDA and what seemed to be the long await blossoming of Mortal Kombat design into something a bit more inspiring than a couple of ninja teen queens sharing sweaters.

Nice to see MK still be MK, but this trailer is far from kicking the doors down. MKvsDC deux, sans the obvious superheroes, and a kayfabe gimmick that describes a chiefly 2D fighting plane as something new? How about one of these guys develop a new kicking style, and buy a "I'm With Stupid" t-shirt someone else isn't already wearing to the dance?

We haven't played it with FMVs and voice actors reading lines of dialogue. All my life I've wanted to see the REAL Mortal Kombat storyline ACTED OUT, told long-form rather than through short bios and endings, either in a film or animation or comic books, or in the story mode or a modern game.

I always thought the only way I'd ever get to see that dream come true was if I magically won the lottery a couple dozen times, bought the license myself, and made it happen with my own bare hands.

But this is making me happy because it's starting to look like I won't have to do it myself, they'll just GIVE me what I always wanted.

Thus, I'm optimistically clinging to the small hints I've seen that this will retell the canon faithfully and not screw it up or change things that don't need to be changed like SM did.

This game looks almost perfect but please Ed Boon do something with the character's stances! The stances are the main drawback now. Sub-Zero needs back his classic stance from MK2 and MK Shaolin Monks. This was his trademark just like Scorpion's stance from MK2. Please make something about that!

Look, man. I've been here for years. I was here when Shaolin Monks' story turned out to be full of shit. I was here for Armageddon not having any bios. So I think I know the deal by now. So if I want to get my hopes up so they can be let down again, that's my choice to make and I already know the consequences from lots of experience.

But the one thing I absolutely will not stand for is these Johnny-Come-Lately fans who never liked or grew bored of the franchise the way it is and only care about gore and fatalities, and think MK should be ugly shades of gray and grime. Even if this game turns out to have an absolutely terrible story mode and I was wrong about everything, I'll still fight against THOSE people's opinions with every breath in my body to prevent the MK AFTER this one from being re-imagined into the ugly mess they want.

Well then, I wish luck to the Netherrealm Studios team.

If they can make money out of rehearsing the same stale ideas they certainly possess talent. Not artistic mind you, but it is still something that is of considerate amount of noteworthy. Truly amazing.

Pray that this will be enough to keep MK above the water. The reputation of Midway was thoroughly fucked when it bankrupted and MK is considered nothing short of uninterestingly bland, or a joke. I wish the fandom prosperity for it will be the only thing keeping this alive if my fears come true about MK9, and that WB doesn't pull a series of good marketing moves.

I certainly respect your wanting to see this, I used to feel the exact same way, especially considering the endings and the idea of having to piece together everything that may or may not have happened.

But now? 17 years after MK2 came out in arcades? 15 years after MK3? You'd really rather have this MK game then a true sequel that actaully continues the story?

See, that's the part that I don't get. To me it looks like MKvsDC, only with all MK characters and no ability to side step or walk in 3D.

Some are saying that they hope they change the story, but wasn't that why people were so angry about the movie pitch? How many comments did I see from people complaining about Reptile having a skin condition or Baraka being a plastic surgeon etc?

So if it's not okay to change the characters origins (ie their stories) for a movie version, then why would it be a good idea to change the story for the games? To me, that's a catch 22. If you change the story, you're basically retconning what happened in the classic games, but if you don't change the story, you're just rehashing the old games for no real reason other than seeing them acted out in cut scenes.

I'm sorry Razor, as cool as it would be to see that version of MK, and I agree, it's cool, it's still nothing new. It's the same. It's the same characters, costumes, backgrounds, stories, fighting system etc. Where's the innovation?

Of course, this is only the first trailer, so maybe we'll see some new characters with new stories that can intermix with the old stuff. I doubt it, but who knows, right? I'm trying to be optimistic, but beyond retelling an old story, I still don't get why people are so hyped about what appears to be the same old, same old.

This sucks, I was really hoping to be blown away by the next MK game. I was hoping we'd see what happened after Armageddon. A new tournament, with many new characters. Instead we got a verses game before and now we've apparently got MK Trilogy's story with souped up graphics and MKvsDC's fighting system. Anyone else know why that's such a great thing?

This game looks great to me because we haven't gotten a true standalone Mortal Kombat fighter since Deception. MKDC was great, but it was a crossover with eleven MK characters. MKA was a pile of shit Ed Boon brought onto the world and I refuse to acknowledge it. MKSM was fun, but it was just a side game. Deception was the last pure MK fighter and it wasn't that good.

I guess the reason I'm in love with this trailer is because the last time we saw Cage throw a fireball in the Living Forrest was when I was three or four. The last time I saw Kung Lao juggle Nightwolf up into the air with his tornado was in 1995. The last time we saw 2D gameplay from MK was 15 years ago.

I'm excited because we are finally getting another MK game

There will be changes. Face it. It's called a REBOOT for a reason. I'm personally HOPING for changes, otherwise I don't see the damn point in rebooting a series. Telling the same old story that we have been fed for almost twenty years now? No thank you. What has it gotten us? A REBOOT. We'll be getting yet another if this new reboot series does nothing but regurgitate old stories.

I too feel like this is the first MK game since Deception (as bad as it was gameplay wise, the last good MK story). We haven't had a proper Mortal Kombat story since 2004. Armageddon was shallow and 80% of the characters ended up with no bios. It felt cheap to me, but I understand it was virtually meant to be MK Trilogy 2. MKvs.DCU was a standalone crossover game that wasn't ever going to be canon. So I am excited to see where the story is here and what happens. I have faith what interested me in MK:DA and MK:D is still there somewhere.

Yes the game itself looks somewhat lackluster honestly, but they have quite a while to fix it up. The arenas look nice, so I just don't get the lack of that same detail on the characters. The animations, stances, etc. really need to be individualized. Still, the past few days have been big debates about the story of Mortal Kombat, and we've yet to see any details about what it is yet. That's still the most important factor to me.

No one official has used the word "reboot". That's something we the fans have been doing. It's just a buzzword anyway. Here's a couple more words and phrases that mean almost the same thing but don't necessarily require there to be changes from the canon: "remake", "update", "retelling", "revisit the old games".

Until Ed actually TELLS us what the story mode will be, all we have to go on is the leaked casting sheet and this trailer and there are no canon violations in them so FOR NOW, the proof is on the side of MY theory.

If that changes, I'll go "Okay, you were right, maybe this won't be so great." But until then, stop harshing my buzz with your wild guesses with no proof.
