Whoever brought up the thought of Scorpion sliding down a pole like Jade sucks, because now I can't get that image out of my head. Also if you guys consider Smoke gay then you should be considering Jade a lesbian as well, since basically they were given similar relations in MK9.

Could Smoke be gay? Yes
Could any character in the game be gay? Yes
Why? Because it's so not releavant to the story that it's never discussed with the exception of the fine folk of MKO. NRS hasn't hinted once at the inclusion of lgbt character.
Until NRS makes a game and spends time developing a gay character/story line, it's all just internet gossip. Please stop planting rainbow flags in the ass of every character.

Of course it's internet gossip. What's wrong with that? We're just speculating and discussing about this topic, we aren't trying to find the holy grail.

Uh, wow. I actually did read the entire thread up to the 5th page. And yes you are doing just that. You're speculating on the sexuality of fictional characters based on their appearance(Buried under a mountain of gay jokes, stereotypes and of course Japanese anime sex feitshes.). So I get it, you're the big bad "I r smart" guy, but don't pretend you're not debating the sexuality of MK characters in a thread that's based on that subject. Also didn't we already have a "Gaymers" thread for this discussion? In fact I'm pretty sure there was a few pages of people debating Rain's sexuality in that thread. Reiko too actually.
You know, I must be old fashioned because for the life of me I can't understand why this is even a thread. I guess all I can do is hope the mods close it but that's probably wishful thinking.

I think you guys are looking way toooooo hard into this.
Yeah this is kind of silly. And quite frankly, I think it -would- be a bad thing if they made Smoke gay.
And it has nothing to do with the gay part and everything to do with the fact that once you start labeling a character, he becomes labeled permanently. As Smoke, the rogue Lin Kuei assassin who harnesses his namesake and thus is a damn good assassin, the character is interesting.
But when you define him as "gay" or "bisexual," he now becomes "The Gay Ninja," or "The Bisexual Ninja."
Just look at Jax. Even today, so many years removed from equal rights being granted. I could count on more then two hands the amount of times I hear people go "Hey its the black guy with metal arms" as opposed to "Special Forces Guy with Cybernetic Arms."
I'd rather characters be recognized for what matters. Scorpion is the undead spectre looking to avenge his family. Liu Kang is the champion of Mortal Kombat. Raiden is Earthrealm's Thunder God. Kitana is Princess of Outworld. Jade is Kitana's best friend and bodyguard. Etc. Etc.
I'd rather that then see:
Smoke is a gay ninja
Quan Chi is an albino sorcerer
Jax is a black guy with metal arms
Sheeva is a butch four armed lesbian monster
That just makes the characters IMO, no longer interesting. I have no problems with gay people, I have a few as friends, but the unfortunate truth is that in today's society, once you define their preferences, it ultimately defines everything else about them. And this thread really shows that in alot of people. It's a backwards way of thinking, but it is what it is.

Lol. Dude the pun was very much intended. Not trying to offend, just thought I would try lighten the mood a bit.
PS: Reptile likes snakes. Reptile is gay!

if you think he's gay because his relationship to sub-zero, then stryker must be gay too for his friendship to Kabal. I just don't see anything gay about smoke. Long hair on men is fine, and him running a little funny? I just don't see how any of this could be hard evidence to his sexuality. It's irrelevant. He's a ninja. who cares?

Let's get something straight. He is not a ninja. He is Lin Kuei. Scorpion was a ninja. And Smoke is not gay. He is a lesbian, he likes women.
Seriously, I am somewhat laughing inside reminding me how utterly feminine some martial art stuff from both Europe and both Asia is to the average man. And how utterly ridiculous our concept of masculinity must perhaps seem to those who came before us afew hundred years before....

We are talking about 1 character. We were not talking about anime fetishes, we were talking about the anime art style, one person brought up hentai and it was quickly shot down in fact. Additionally, why are we only allowed 1 gay thread? Who the hell decided that? We are also eagerly awaiting your marvelous, eye opening, and groundbreaking post.
Smoke being gay is completely irrelevant to anything story wise and frankly unneeded. I'm not saying this to sound like a douche or a bigot. I'm saying this because it wouldn't lead to a good or relevant outcome.
Think back to post release of the seventh Harry Potter book. Nowhere in that book did it say Dumbledore was gay. It was open to speculation, but the plot went along just fine without that bit of information. If JK Rowling had included that bit of information in the book, it would clear up a lot of questions and be a certain shocker, but it really wouldn't have changed anything plot wise. This bit of info wasn't in the book though. A few months after release, Rowling thought it would be super cool and edgy to make an official announcement of Dumbledore's sexuality, and insane Christian mothers everywhere went even more batshit about this series. Now maybe I stand alone here, but I felt that whole post-release shit stirrer came off as an attempt of Rowland to get every bit of spotlight left while her story came to a close. It wasn't cool. It wasn't edgy. It WAS kind of attention-whorish.
(I'm not dogging on Christians at all before you guys get any ideas, we're all aware that there are people who take things over the edge.)
Now let's apply this to MK. Let's say Ed Boon woke up tomorrow morning and said "You know what? I'm bringing Smoke back as a gay ghost for our next game. " Are there really any positive outcomes that would come out of this besides a new side plot? Smoke's image would be ruined, fanboys/girls would bitch, the media would get a raging controversial boner. It's just unnecessary.
I wouldn't object to NRS creating a new character, and making him homosexual. If done well, their plot would have potential. Nobody would fuck around with any classic characters. It would be something new and fresh to the series. Go for it.
Now let me clarify one more thing. I have nothing against gays AT ALL. I know this post may come off as prejudice, but I was making a point.

Not all gay men are feminine. Just like not all straight men are masculine. So I'm not sure what it is you are trying to say with that statement above.

Mostly what we (over here) consider to be gay is the effeminate, metrosexual, flamboyant etc. boutique attitude. I haven't considered MANLY GAY for a few specific reasons: it does not really exist over here, second it is nobody's bussiness.
But thanks for pointing that out. What I have meant was that the "feminine" that is commonly associated with GIRLY GAY, overtly SENSITIVE people (and fruits, homosexuals and pineapples included) is often dismissed as such, because heterosexuality needs to be reassured.
Which can lead to hillarious results, see the one Simpsons episode where Homer takes Bart to a steel mill (after exposure to a homosexual friend in fear of homo-ing up the kid - the guy is a bit effeminate and less masculine) to find out that they are the typical muscle-gay men who burst into a song.
Not sure if I conveyed what I meant, point is: just because somehting looks smooth and feminine does not mean it is gay, or less masculine. Hell, for example knightly wrestling is based on grace and eschews the use of brute force (as basically all functional martial arts eschew the brute approach). And that is a martial art that prefers crippling the opponent by all means possible, nutshots, eyeshots included.

Right... because controversy definitely has no place in Mortal Kombat.
