It would be so pointless to include a gay character merely for the sake of having a gay character. This series has never developed any sort of romances in the stories, straight or otherwise. Mortal Kombat needs to just stay away from it entirely.
I mean, look at Dragon Age 2. People were livid over the fact that the female love interests were limited, the male love interests were frequent, and everyone in the game was bisexual. Fan were furious.
I don't know. It just sucks knowing that if a major mainstream game were to have a gay couple, everyone would shun away.
Last time I checked, Dragon Age was praised for the romance options. But at least in RPGs, romance can actually mean something. What the hell does it matter in a fighting game?
Liu Kang x Kitana, Cage x Sonya, Mileena x Baraka (in MK2), Sindel x King Jerrod, and Li Mei x Onaga all say "Hello".
Understand, I don't think romance in fighting games are a neccessity, but it isn't a flaw. I mean, I don't think the romances should be FFVIII or FFX big, but having the characters develop non-romantically, but then confess through a swift kiss or hug....I see nothing wrong with that.
And the developer of DA2 actually had to answer to countless complaints about the gay relationships in the game. That's pretty bad.

Liu Kang x Kitana, Cage x Sonya, Mileena x Baraka (in MK2), Sindel x King Jerrod, and Li Mei x Onaga all say "Hello".
I said they were never developed. Liu Kang and Kitana and Cage and Sonya only came up for the first time in game with this last game, and they're nothing more than "ur pretty". That's not anything.
Sindel and Jerrod was something, because it actually had an impact on the story.
My point is that it's such an insignificant detail in the grand scheme of things. I don't see the point in seeing Kai telling Kenshi he's hot. It's pointless.

Kai telling Kenshi he's hot.
Oh, God. Don't ever say that!

Two issues:
1) Why does romance have to be "you're hot"?
Liu Kang never really connected to Kitana with 'you're hot'. That was much more Johnny. Liu and Kitana connected through Liu's sympathy and her doubt in her father. He was a conflicting image that made her realize that her father may not be right in his deeds, and that she may need to shift sides.
Johnny's romance started off as being a "You're hot, let's have sex"....because that's Johnny. If Stryker turned to Smoke and said, "You're hot" and the two immediately started making out, I would have issues with that. That's not romantic development, that's bullshit.
If Stryker and Smoke's romance played out like this:
-The two are forced to separate from the group.
-The two share a few drinks in between story chapters and laugh their heads off.
-Stryker saves Smoke from Noob Saibot.
-Smoke swears to repay his debt to Stryker for saving his life.
-Heroes all get caught up in a fight against the Lin Kuei.
-Smoke pays too much attention to Stryker, trying to make sure he's not getting himself killed.
-Sektor attacks Smoke while he's distracted.
-Before Sektor can kill Smoke, Stryker takes him down again.
-The heroes march down to the Netherrealm to defeat Quan Chi.
-In the midst of the chaos, Stryker and Smoke come to a crossroad where Stryker must find Kenshi and Smoke must go fight alongside Sub-Zero.
-Smoke stops Stryker.
-Stryker reacts confusedly.
-Smoke steals a quick kiss, and runs off.
-Stryker acts surprised, but laughs with a smile.
-The two split up and take part in the fight.
DONE! Developed friendship and a romantic interest set in motion. From that point on, there would be no need for any more romantic scenes between the two, as their connection had been made and the viewers can fill in the blanks.
Now granted, I don't support Smoke x Stryker (mostly because it wouldn't make sense at all). Also noted, I made up everything on that relationship. And Smoke and Stryker would never form such a major focus in one game.
However....read the line "The heroes march down to the Netherrealm...blah blah blah". From that point on, replace Stryker with Johnny Cage and replace Smoke with Sonya. Imagine that scene taking place toward the end of MK10. With the development Cage and Sonya have currently made and the possible development they'll make in MK10, that scene could fit in perfectly.
2) Also, on the factor of 'romance not having a factor on the plot'...
Aside from the fact that Kitana's romance IS an impact on the story considering her shift in alignment, why does a relationship need to exist ONLY to impact the plot?
Maybe it's my ideals and I'm alone on this, but I believe characters are what should drive the story, not the plot. I'm not interested in a plot focused on a bunch of cardboard cut outs doing random things.

LOL!
It was an example! DAMMIT! I don't write slash fan fiction, nor do I support that couple!
I actually don't think Smoke is gay at all. Stryker? ......I haven't seen him enough to pass judgement yet.

You say that as if the MK team has actually put thought into it.
They haven't. And they won't.

I'm not implying that they'll give enough information about his sexuality.
I mean, there hasn't been enough screentime of him for me to pick up his mannerisms and personality for me to say whether or not I get vibes from him.

Gaydar doesn't work on fictional video game characters.
That's actually one of the many features that Cyrax's arm console supports.

This is a man.
This man has no intentions of looking like a woman.
This man has a severe amount of character development where he is consistently trying convince another male character that there is a path to redemption in life.
One of the endings this man can have consists of him running off with the other man on other adventures, in an attempt to lead him to salvation.
......Explain.

...Yeah, that series definitely has some gay undertones to it. I think one character actually was a lesbian. Actually, I may have just used the wrong -tones word just now.

"You've been smooching with everybody! Snuffy, Al, Leo, Little Moe with the Gimpy Leg, Cheeks, Bony Bab, Cliff! I could go on forever, baby!"
Cliff: ..It's a lie!
I love that movie so much.

As pertaining to SMoke, I never saw him as "gay". Just shokcing that it lookedl ike he an Afro in charcater leaks but then in the end ( I thought) it looked kind of cool!
