I stumbled across this fanart made by G009 at deviantart.com:
And it really got me thinking. Is Smoke the new "gay" character of Mortal Kombat? And before you guys freak out about this, I mean this seriously.
Before this game, there's been some speculation about the characters' sexuality in Mortal Kombat. Some are quite obvious, like with Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Kitana and so on, but in the Gaymer thread (which seems to have died out after a long lifespan), we've discussed about some male characters who might be homosexual.
Bishounen is Japanese for "Pretty Boy" or "Feminine Boy", and though Smoke isn't feminine in his behaviour, his new look with his long silvery hair flowing about in the wind, he's gained this new title by many MK fans - especially shown in deviantart.com as of late.
In Story Mode, Smoke is shown as having a very affectionate friendship to Tundra, the younger Sub-Zero, caring alot for him. It's mentioned that their friendship borders to being brotherly. There's nothing gay about that, by the way. It is very common amongst heterosexual men to make such a tight bond to one another... However, it does stir some thoughts in my head about how far their relationship might go.
Anyways, for a long time, Rain has been seen as the "gay" MK character for two reasons: he wears purple as his main colour, the colour purple representing the gay community, but as we all know, the real reason he wears purple is because he is inspire from the song "Purple Rain" by Prince as more or less a joke. The second reason is that he is a male Edenian, Edenians known for their beauty and grace which there are many female characters representing, and until MK Armageddon, Rain was the only male Edenian character.
Might Smoke have replaced Rain in this game, seeing Rain isn't amongst the roster? Has Smoke become the new "gay icon" of Mortal Kombat? What do you think?

Well, to be honest, Smoke did run kinda girly toward Cyber Sub-Zero at the end of Kabal's chapter, so, I'm gonna say maybe.
Seriously, you do make good points.

Because of his hair? I don't understand.....
I might be a smoke fan boy I just don't see it.

Thank you. ^^
I don't think Smoke ran girly though. It wasn't particularly masculine, but because he's an assassin, I assume that he is more gracious in his movements. But who knows?

Not JUST because of his hair, but it sure has made an impact.

The Gaymer thread has more or less died out, and this is a more specific topic, not just for or about gaymers. Therefore I decided to make a new thread about it. So please, stay on topic. ^^

True, assassins can be graceful in their movements.
In Smoke's case, maybe a little TOO graceful... lol

When I saw the name of this thread, I instantly knew it was about the fact that Smoke is a homo. I mean... LOOK AT HIS EFFIN' HAIR! Now I have nothing against Smoke's hair in this game (even though it makes him look like a male Sindel) but... REALLY NRS? Thats the best design you could come up with. No wonder this fan art was made.

Well, Mortal Kombat has been known to be controversial about stuff.. ;P

I think I'm gonna back out of this one guys.

Lol. I wouldn't really care either way. Honestly, I don't want to know about the fighters' sex lives. If it makes people happy to see him as gay, that's cool with me.
He does run like a girl, though.
And he does have that wistful, sad face when Subs gets taken away.

Oh, no no, there's no "fact" about Smoke being gay. There's never been an official confirmation about this. This is simply a discussion about how Smoke is presented as such.
Personally, I like the design. I think he looks cool, and my first impression of his new design was never associated with him being gay. I just think he looks cool. ^^
It does seem that it is a popular impression around the web to think Smoke might be gay though, and as said, not just because of his hair, but also because of his role in the Story Mode.

Close thread plz.

Why? Because the topic doesn't suit your personal preferences? Grow up.
I did make a clear warning in the thread title, so if you dislike the topic at hand, just please stay out of it. There's no need to be immature about it and start trolling.
So please, stay on topic. Thank you.

i used to have hair like that and i'm completely straight. I don't think that appearance determines sexuality.

Let me address that again. Peoples opinion about Smoke being a homo. Plus, I think that this is a very good fanart, just that it seems to express Smoke's homophobic side (and that's just in my opinion.) In story mode, there is of course the girly run in Kabal's chapter and his close friendship to Kui Liang (very uncomfortably, unchristianly close friendship,) and that of course sparks different thoughts in peoples heads, making them think he is gay.

I laughed my ass off when I noticed that. XD
It's one of the most ridiculous hairstyles in MK history, in my opinion.

Absolutely not. Hair does not determine sexuality, I completely agree with this. And therefore I'd like to say once again that this thread is not just about Smoke's hair.

I think you mean "homosexual" and not "homophobic", or am I reading it wrong? Also, it is very unchristian to assassinate people for money, so I doubt either of them are Christians, though I could of course be wrong. ^^

The whole thing is entirely irrelevant, especially in Mortal Kombat. 90% of the cast could be homosexual for all we know.

You're right, I mean "homosexual." Also, I was just joking around when I said "Unchristianly." However, I am still on note with uncomfortably.

I had to pop the game in just to see Smoke's breaker after you mentioning this. I don't find it particularly gay the way he breaks though...

Then who in the roster is the 10% that are straight?
Probably not Kahn.
