SmackDown vs. RAW 2006: The Season Mode
After hearing it from players and critics alike last year, THQ wanted to ensure that WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006 had the best season mode ever available to wrestling fans. The 2004 version of that feature, after all, suffered from a myriad of different problems (including poorly-recorded voice acting and rather generic storylines) and just about every other sports game on the market eclipsed it in terms of options, unlockables, and things to do. But based on what I've seen of SmackDown vs. RAW 2006, so far, the game's apparently permanent status as a season mode underperformer isn't looking quite so permanent anymore.
You see, in the newest iteration of WWE SmackDown vs. RAW, THQ has gone back to the drawing board and revamped two main areas of the Season feature to make it more like real WWE programming. As basic an improvements these two fixes may sound (Presentation and Gameplay flow, more specifically), I can tell you first hand that it makes an enormous difference in how the season plays out already... and I'm only one month into it.
To start, there are more than 100 different completely motion-captured cinematic cutscenes ranging from two to six minutes in length. Likewise, there are double the amount of cutscenes compared to 2004 and players no longer need to press the X button to move on to the next scene (now, the storytelling happens in real time). The voice-acting used to convey these stories is much, much better when compared to last year too, and the wrestlers finally sound like they're speaking with emotion and conviction and boast realistic lip synching at every turn.
And speaking of, well... speaking, created superstars now have voices too. In fact, there's no longer onscreen text used during the season mode unless players turn on the optional feature in the menu screen. Instead, gamers can now select from among five different voice types to represent their characters between matches, or select from any existing superstar on the roster and listen to them instead.
Of course, the big news is that some of (but not all) the legends also have voice-overs included with their personas and can be used during a regular season just like the normal guys (the basic rule of thumb is that if he has a voice, he can be used during a season). What's more, there is also legend-specific storylines into addition to superstar-particular plots to go along with them. This means that if you choose the Undertaker or Triple H, you're going to run into situations that you wouldn't otherwise see with anyone else. Every WWE superstar will act and behave in a manner that mirrors their real life personality too, and regardless of whom you choose every last character in the season mode will speak.
On the downside, the two-player simultaneous season from SmackDown 2 on the first PlayStation still hasn't been brought back for SmackDown vs. RAW 2006 -- and while women can defend their titles in exhibition matches, they can't be used for season mode either. The good news is that the storylines themselves are pretty interesting, and can boast as many as 10 scenes in a single arc before players move on to the next feud. It's also worth noting that seasons are now two years long instead of one (one each for SmackDown and RAW), and there's even an ECW storyline thrown in for good measure.
When combining both seasons together, players can expect more than 70 different wrestling matches and around 15-16 hours of gameplay if they manage to go through the typical path. Surprisingly, THQ tells us that SmackDown vs. RAW isn't going to allow players to switch shows mid-season this year, and that any cross-promotional stuff only happens as a result of the storyline. Needless to say, moving from SmackDown to RAW and vice-versa won't be voluntary, but your ultimate goal is still to capture all the belts from both shows.
To pull off such a feat, players have a whole boatload of challenges and choices at their disposal. While the storyline itself isn't overly branching, users will have the opportunity to select who they want to fight, what kind of matches they want, and who they want to align with in certain situations (via multiple choice). As an added bonus, players can also earn trophies for successfully completing specific tasks (with prizes for being a legend killer, winning the Royal Rumble, doing well in Bar Room Brawls, etc), earn alternate costumes because of those trophies, and unlock a new legend for beating the storyline mode for each show.
There's still a lot about the season mode of SmackDown vs. RAW 2006 that we don't know (like the extent of the character-specific storylines and how many multiple endings there are), but those are revelations probably best left for you. Even so, we've put together a special treat for wrestling fans curious about how the new season works. Linked below is a snippet from the very first storyline in the game when using Randy Orton. It'll give you a good idea of how things go over the course of a feud and show you just how much things have been improved.

Sounds pretty good...I was really disapointed with the season mode in Smackdown v.s. Raw...in fact the season mode on Hear comes the pain was slightly better, which is pretty sad. In fact the last 3 games have been pretty much the same except for the graphics being slightly better. It's nice to know they are finally making changes to the core of the game.

Holy shit that sounds like one hell of a game! I can't wait until it comes out. I hope to get the first copy of the game from my local Wal-Mart. I'm going to start a season right away.
Last Raw on Spike was good. Funny how during Vince's speach, almost any reference to next week was cut out. He'd be talking and all of a sudden no sound, weird.

Noticed that too huh... it kept cuting out quite a bit when JR, King, and Coach were mentioning stuff about USA Network...pretty lame but whatever.
Blah...looks like we wont be given a choice this year. Kurt Angle is already the number contender featured in the Taboo Tuesday poster. Crap. The only really cool thing about last year was how we could pick the opponent for the World and Intercontinental champions.

I was wondering what was up... Now that I think of it I remember this happening at 215 as well.

Yea it's been happening ever since 213 as far as I know, but not this bad. Seems like it takes 5-6 posts to get the next page to show. I thought it might be because this thread is massive, but I seen it just happened in that MK Quiz thread as well.

Yeah, Bobby looks like he could go places. We'll have to see how good his mic work is. I love how he integrates his amature background into his moveset. I've always wondered why more wrestlers with an amature background dont' chain their shit together more, or dig in with the double legs and float overs. That shit is top tier if you ask me, but bleh.
Man, I think I'm going to miss the majority of the homecoming and ultimate fight night. I've got a 5:30pm - 8pm class on monday. Fucking lame.

Youre talking about the game? Ive been waiting to play stone cold for years. He is my favorite wrestler. Next is the Rock (knew he would be there not suprised)
I did that "wrestler persona" thing in that one guys sig:
I take my job as a wrestler very seriously! I eat, breath, and sleep the wrestling business!
What wrestler persona are YOU?
I knew it.

Your wrestler persona should go in your sig. Any way, welcome to the thread.
I plan on getting the game as well. I've gotten every other Smackdown game without hesitation, and without rental (I also got the WWE racing game), so this one will be no different. As for the Legends, when I found out that DOR2 had Hogan, i hoped that SvR would have Hogan, or I'd be pissed.
I stopped watching wrestling 2 years ago... actually not completely stopped, but I've stopped obsessively watching (used to be that I couldn't miss a Raw or Smackdown!)... now I'll catch a show every now and then, and I'll check the WWE site to see what's new
but i've bought the new Smackdown games every year.... admittedly, sometimes I rent them before I buy them, but that's only because I don't have $50 to spare, and ik that the games are so popular that they'll eventuall be Greatest Hits (sometimes I cave and buy them when they're at $40-30)
but idk about this year... most of the wrestlers look like jobbers to me, and half of them aren't even employed by the WWE anymore... sure there's a better online mode, new mo-cap, a refined engine and more modes, but what good is that if there isn't a decent roster?
I haven't heard anything about the legends list, but I'm hoping it's better this year, especially since there's no more LoW... that would be a little more incentive to buy the game

I think last years roster was the absolute worst roster in any Smackdown game. They had a chance to put in a lot of the newer guys but they didnt. It was like Smackdown HCTP but minus alot of people. Last year the only new additions were Jindrak, Cade and Renee Dupri. This year they added a TON of people cause they've had almost 2 years of newcomers to add to the roster.

Woohoo I love TNA. Good show tonight, I was a bit disappointed in Styles vs Strong though, they did it too quick. I knew Monty's match was going to be a squash.
I LOVED the triple threat between Shelley,Sabin, and Williams. I've gotta say it as I have before, Alex Shelley is fucking incredible. The match was great, and showing off the Canadian Destroyer after it ended was cool too.
Main event was alright,I didnt expect too much but it was cool seeing Sabu come out. I just wanted him to kill Hardy.
Ohhh and the ending. That was awesome. Jarrett was completely screwed there lol. The debut of Team 3D was gold IMO. Only thing I didnt like about the ending is Kevin Nash becoming number one contender. Im hoping Monty Brown will get thrown into the mix soon. But hey,at least its not one of the 3LK,I was ready to smack my TV when they came out cause I thought one of them was going to get a title shot.
God its great to have TNA on Spike.

What would've been better, is for him to have come to WWE and feud with Kane, when Kane was still the 'masked' big red machine. But, yeah, seeing him come into WWE now would be cool. Who does anyone think Abyss would be suited to feud with, i mean, besides Kane?
TNA was good. The Main-event was a little weak, as was the show is general, up until the ending, which was awesome! The fucking Dudley Boyz! They are going to kill AMW next week, and Nash is going to kill Jarrett, and take his precious title! The only thing that sucks about the Dudley's in TNA, the terrible names they were given! Of course we have Vince and the WWE to thank for that.
