As far as enforcers go, we've got Reptile, Ermac, Kano, Mileena and Goro, so far.

Shao Kahn's soul being in Ermac might make the latter more than just another lackey. Kano's always shown more indepedence and agency than Reptile. Mileena is stepping up (then again, she's been more ambitious than Reptile and Baraka since MKD). Goro's just DLC, and likely not part of the story mode (and if he is, then like Mileena he stepped up). So basically, Reptile is the one familiar henchman who's still mostly that. So why bring him back, and make him part of the Kotal gang, over Baraka?

I like Reptile, so I'm not annoyed that he's back. I just wonder why him instead of Baraka, who'd likely play a similar role. Is it precisely because they couldn't think of a different role for him, and prefer Reptile to him? Is Reptile more popular?

Baraka could have been Mileena's Reptile (henchman with little chances of being anything more), but he might not even be that. In fact, I wonder if he's not going to get Motared in a cutscene or two, if you know what I mean.

I know we still don't know the full roster, but Baraka's chances aren't looking very good.

With the emphasis on variations this time around, maybe it was hard for them to come up with 3 for him
that's all I got. sucks though, he's a fave of mine

I'd say the main reason would be, Kotal needs "henchman". And seeing as how he seems to be a bit more caring about his subjects, it would make sense that Reptile(given his situation), would be drawn to that as opposed to being a foot soldier for Mileena.

Because Reptile is more popular?

Baraka is an awesome character and I wish he was in, I think you make good points when you say that he could have played a similar role. And I think he could have, on Mileena's side.

But NRS seems to have took wayyyy to many stupid pills and they can't make good decisions with the roster.

Let's just wait this storm and hope there is an Ultimate MKX where we get awesome characters such as Baraka,Kabal,Smoke And hopefully some fucking Cyborgs.

As for now, I already set my standards to low, MKX is for me just MK:SF2.

Honestly Baraka should be in this game as Mileena's ally. It was pretty stupid of NRS to have someone who actually supports Mileena to be sitting out in a game where Mileena is playing a major part and needs allies.

To me it's very weird because all playable MK1 & 2 characters are in, except for Baraka & Tsung. Tsung has Quan Chi, Ermac and Shinnok with similar moves / style / necromancer, sorcerer, souls etc. Baraka however is very unique and was even in freaking MK vs. DC Comics over Johnny and a few others! He's a staple character, familiar face and with Mileena forces lacking, it would make sense he would be in. They could easily come up with variations for him, I think they just figured one Tartakan was enough or something..still have hope for DLC since those are in the works.
Cauze da Zilly man is probably more Respected or Revered by the Osh-Tekk Kotal Kahn.

That's my thought, too. Baraka really only has one trick, which is slashing like a berserker. I can figure they'd give him a rushdown variation and a defensive one that relies on his spin slash and chop-chop, but it's really hard to come up with three unique ways to say "he cuts you with arm blades." If I could build him my way, I would have given him Reptile's slo-mo senses (and made Reptile's "stall forceball" its own variant), a second defensive style, and a rushdown that gives him something like Kitana's blade sharpening to boost his output -- maybe while "sharpened" he goes into Tarkatan Rage and gains some extra moves to rush and juggle with for a limited time. Or he could go full Berserker and be unstoppable for a limited time... although I suspect that would go to Goro first.

Aside from gameplay, though, he was as much of a joke in MK9 as Reptile and it seemed to me like he took more flak from the fans over not ever winning a fight. I've also heard he was fairly low-tier and not played a whole lot, which was never a complaint with Reptile.

He might yet still be in there though, if not on disc then DLC.

Baraka variations are easy, with a little imagination, you can go far which is what a creative director should be able to do:

- Slash variation: blades extended, which would cause the most damage of the variations. The downside should be that he will never use his fists, strictly the blades. He would also be susceptible to getting grabbed since his reach is longer. He would basically have his 3 go to moves from MK2.

- Cutter variation: Big blades are in his arms and cannot be used unless it's a standard move. The focus is on the smaller blades in his arms though. Maybe they can add some to his legs or have some spikes on his shoes or pads / shin shield.

- Monster variation: his eyes are glowing red / orange, he's a bit quicker and will be more of a grappling freak, who can grab his characters more easily and use his teeth to bite and such. Think Blanka moves in SF. Maybe he can even have some blades coming out of the top of his head and on his belt so he can grind people's faces with his belt or use his head to cause more damage.

It would seem that popularity dictates who goes in MKX. Reptile>Baraka, simple as that. Baraka seems like a good candidate for the kombat pack though.

Baraka is a joke in light of MK9. He was incredibly low-tier and was a boot-licking jobber in the story. Because of this, he was ranked something like 29th on the 'most played online' character list. He's also much harder to adapt to a variation system, since all he does is attack with his bladed arms.

Can't blame NRS for not bringing him back (although you can blame them for getting Baraka on to people's shit lists).

Here you are making assumptions and this is the biggest problem with people in this fanbase: operating on assumptions.

It's possible that Mileena's large presence in the story trailer is a red herring. It's possible she gets taken out quickly and without much fuss. The fact that all of her scenes in the trailer take place in one location don't speak much for her prominence in the game. The fact that the roster lacks jobbers to serve her may mean her faction isn't a long-term problem.

Stop and think before you call people stupid.

Guy needs a break, hasn't missed a game since Deadly Alliance. I'm still amazed he made it into MKDC and Cage didn't.

I've thought of this possibility, that D'Vorah, and Ferra/Torr (and Erron Black, if he's on the roster) are intended to be MKX's jobbers, so with them plus Reptile and Kano, NRS thinks it's already got enough of them, so no need for Baraka. If Rain's indeed back, and Goro's actually part of the story, then they might be Mileena's enforcers.

It's also possible D'Vorah and Kano will do double-duty and join Mileena, so her side will be well covered.

@umbrascitor
Although you're right in saying Baraka was treated as badly as Reptile for the most part, Reptile did get that awesome scene of wall-climbing while dodging bullets, then stopping other bullets with an acidic shield and disarming Kabal and Stryker with his tongue. Baraka's moment was only scolding another Tarkata for messing with a shotgun.

But anyway, that aforementioned Reptile scene plus his return in MKX might just be proof that NRS does prefer Reptile to Baraka.

It's Reptiles turn. Reptile got MKDA. Baraka got MKD. MKA was everyone. Baraka got MK vs DC. MK9 was everyone.

Reptile hasn't gotten preference over Baraka since deadly alliance.

Why would either characters need preferential treatment?

I kinda agree with this in that Mileena doesn't seem to have many supporters, but Reptile from a tactical stand point is much more useful than Baraka. Kotal seems to have an army of his own, why would he choose a general and his horde over a stealthy ninja? Let's look at his team:

Reptile - Stealth, spy, assassin

Ferra/Torr - Muscle, brute, power

D'Vorah - Specialty, unique, adaptable

Ermac - Sorccer-ish, magic, mystical

Erron - Range, Support, Black Dragon rep.

Where does Baraka fit in that team? I would group him in D'Vorah's spot, however I can imagine her bugs have more uses than Baraka's blades.

He just seems like a really hard character to give a decent update in every aspect, story-wise, fighting style and design. I like him, but he's very static.

But then Reptile looks practically copy/pasted from MK9 in all those aspects as well, so I don't know.

He might still be in but at this point it's unlikely because he probably would have been revealed in the trailer or in the early January reveals.
