Basically another Liu Kang? No thank you. Let's have it to where there's no main hero for the next game and let all characters have a good equal chance on winning the so-called "tournament."

Nobody. The most welcome part of the overall MKDA-MKD-MKA plot was that there was no great big superhero always saving the day again and again. Liu Kang's death was necessary and a big step forward.
