I hope that they bring back actual martial arts styles as well as weapons. I think it's cool and makes sense for MK. For the music, I hope they have that Deception type influence in the sense that it'll be dark and also take in those various instrumental qualities, especially ones like the Taiko drums from Japan.

i personally dont want them to bring back weapons into the game because i liked the old school 2d gaes where you just had to batter each other man to man
im hoping they bring things to the game such as broken bones riped clothes sweat and really grusome fatalities
as long as we still have subby and scorp im happy and they make the game the best it can be and not rush it like armageddon becasue that wasnt that good

As for soundtracks Deception and Armageddon has some of the best tunes. Hopefully they will continue down this path in MK8.
I hope they continue bringing in more unusual characters and develop the other races of MK. More Tarkata, Shokan, Oni, Vampire etc.
I'm not sure what they are going to do for the fighting styles of the characters. If I was Ed or whoever, I would probably go for some characters have weapon and some don't. If done properly there shouldn't be much of an advantage either way.

I hope next-gen delivers lots of cool female characters (with less objectification of them too, I might add).
I also want Deception-type arenas and music. They were spectacular and fun, and the music was enjoyably melodic, dark, energetic, and in some arenas, beautiful.
I want funner gameplay too. MKA felt messy and poor. One less style per character was also lame since it took away that depth of moves each character had in DA and MKD. Air combat did not make up for that.
Finally, I want an improved and expanded KAK mode.
Regarding the real martial arts fighting styles in the game, it can go both ways. MK is fantasy, so made-up styles or fighting moves would suit it and allow for innovation and creativity. Real fighting styles would suit it too though, as long as their assigned to the charactes with care, unlike with several characters in MKA.
If they return though, I'd like to see characters use just one fighting style, but still have lots of different moves like in DA and MKD. They should also stick with one weapon style per character cuz that gives the fighting portion more content so we don't get bored so easily.

My input:
For characters it would be a very unique variety, because I would bring back a lot of nostalgia characters, e.g. Rain, Raiden, kitana, Sindel, Shao Kahn you know ones that I feel wouldn't be mortal kombat without. As for the newer sort of characters I would bring back, Nitara, Frost, Dairou, Havik. As for new characters I hope the producers pull their fingers out their rear ends and make some characters that could continue the franchise. I am actually sometimes scared of when a new mk game comes out because I will be stressing over things like will the new characters have a unique feature that will make them stand out above all the others.
As for arena tunes I agree with sub-zero_7th, they should bring back the mk deception style of dark and eerie music. But I wouldn't mind some nostalgia thrown in their E.G the pit I and II, the acid pool, and the portal especially I loved it when they re-vamped the portal piece in Armageddon.
As for the arenas I want both of the pits, acid pool, portal, netherrealm, Kahns arena etc. but I want them to have death traps but more brutal than ever. when the opponent hits the deathtrap I want to heart the agony the pain the suffering the desperation so it makes me actually feel sorry for the opponent.

For the next GEN game..
FIRST- I would like them to start off by granting a few fan wishes... an example would be, for years now people have been begging for human ninja smoke back in the game, grant them their wish!! There are many other things fans have been asking for without recieving. It would be nice if they listened to things people have been wanting.
Arenas- Okay, they have to do some improving.. Since MK:DA, there havnt really been any NEW memorable arenas. The best arenas (in my opinion) have been OLD arenas that they brought back from older games. So, even tho they are wiping the slate clean, throw in a couple memorable old arenas, just incase the new ones suck. The Portal would be very cool. The MK2 arena with the spikes on the ceiling would be cool. The living Forest would be cool, but a much better version than in Deception. Moving trees, maybe new hidden characters in the background. I dont think people would like a completely new game without a little nostalgia thrown in.
Characters- someone already said it, but i also get a little apprehensive about "wiping the slate clean" Im sorry, but their new character roster in the last few games has been dissapointing. Give us variety!! Give us something different. How about a Persian fighter, like AL RASHEED in MACE: The dark Ages? Or how about an Egyptian fighter, who looks like a pharoe? Just something different than we are used to?
Fighting- Its dangerous changing something like this that people are used to. You have alot of potential to completely ruin the game if you change everything. PLEASE leave in classic moves like jump kicks, uppercuts, and other things like that that has always made mortal kombat, mortal kombat.
KAK- Just more variety, special moves, weapons, Race options IE- Cintaur, Shokan, Reptiles race, maybe some new ones, like a TIGER or FELINE race, if someone wanted to make the REAL KINTARO

uh... classic Kombat is ok, but only for handhelds and downloading (though I'm in the middle of nowhere and can't get a connection about dial-up, so no dling for me)
I agree, though--classic should not be developed anymore for modern consoles--its like having the same game with an updated roster.

I wasnt talking about remaking classic games... Im talking about elements of them.. Some of the classic arenas... the classic moves... that kind of thing.
The new mortal kombat game should have some elements of the classic games to it.
The new mortal kombat game should have some elements of the classic games to it.
Graphics that aren't corny and stupid. ie people that don't look like plastic dolls and blood that actually looks like blood, not gigantic gobs of PlayDo
Better animation, none of that stiff shit from MKDA-MKA. Use Euphoria, for Christ's sake.
A lot more moves per character, with each character having their own eclectic style ECLECTIC: drawing from many sources
Fatalities that are actually worked into the gameplay rather than being saved for the end of the match. They could work like specials do on wrestling games and it should be possible to counter, or avoid them.
More classic characters. If MK can't do its bread and butter characters right, they don't need to be trying to make new characters. They've already proven that the older ones are, in most cases better.
No cheesy cliched shit like vampire bitches and fat drunk guys. I want to be able to take the game seriously. Mortal Kombat earned its respect from being a serious, realistic, gritty fghting game with a side of dark humor. Lately, it's become Mortal Komedy and I don't mean that in a good way.
More in-depth, realistic fighting system. Tons of move-specific counters. More variety in the effects of moves. I want shit on par with Tekken and Virtua Fighter. This is the one thing that MK needs to be considered competent in the curent fighting game landscape.
Environmental fighting, and I don't mean just being able to knock someone into a deathtrap. Watch a Jackie Chan movie or two and you'll see what I mean.
A more 3D style of fighting. Ditch the side by side view of most fighting games and go for a more 3D camera ie MKSM and wrestling games (preferrably from the N64 era).
I would like to see what they could do with the Unreal 3 engine. I'm talking better than VF5! The more realistic the more brutal they can make it.
I would like a completely revamped fighting engine, if not as least something similar to Tekken or Virtua Fighter... still it would be nice if they can get creative and work their magic.
A WHOLE NEW list or characters with MAYBE 1 or 2 of the classics (scorpion & Sub-Zero are fine) along with a better (more broad) character creation and online.
Fixed blood-- maybe look more like Conan or Gears of War. While the blood stays on the character's appearance, and parts of their clothing/armor gets torn and falls apart during gameplay.
Environmental damage-- being able to destroy the character's
surroundings (floors, walls, statues, etc...) and being able to knock
them off into different areas of the game . No Ring-Outs please unless
you plan on making it an Environmental Fatality, in which I don't mind.
2 Fatalities per character-- no more, no less. No stupid making our own crap... the realistically brutal, gory, and fatal (yes fatal... no ripping an arm or leg) fatalities we've all been waiting for.
No more silly humor or vague 'Easter Eggs' that keep fans guessing for months only to stumble upon nothing. No more Bo Rai Cho, no more fart/vomit gags. I'm looking for a dark/serious fighting game that's going to get some serious attention.
Better unlockables-- not shitty pictures of the developers sitting around doing nothing anyone cares about. Some costumes, concept art, cheats, customizations.
Custom soundtrack-- who wouldn't love to play their own music? I'm ready to pop in my Kalmah, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, etc... and kill some foes.
An awe-inspiring Boss and Pre-Boss that will keep even the hardcore players busy for a few rounds. Also, not to make them unlockable (unless it's done with a Cheat Code that's doesn't make it an official character)
No Puzzle, no Kart, no Chess, no Quest... I just want a SOLID fighting game that looks great, runs great, and plays great. I can keep myself plenty busy with Single Player and a decent Online without having to worry about Chess or Kart.
Please make it happen guys, I'm rooting for you!

Id like to see KAK gone. That completely ruins any fighting game imo. Its like we werent sure what to do so here ya go do what you want. MK 1 and 2 didnt KAK for it to be the biggest fighting games if their time. The biggest thing I wanna see are actual Fatalities back and more realistic looking and more involved than ever. No more im going to cut your head off and thats my fatality crap. As pretty much a lot of other people have said the dark gritty look Boon's talking about and a really good soundtrack but also allowing me to play my own if I want. Bringing the actual tournament back like MK 1and 2 as well would be nice along with some really cool new arenas. Im really looking forward to how this game will look. I wish they could take still photographs and wrap the images around a 3D model to give it that real to life mk 1 and 2 look but it being something new at the same time. REally I wan the game to be a going back to its roots but on a whole new and reinvented level.
Basic Breakdown :
Looks Gorgeous
Characters that dont only look cool but have a great story
Bring actual Fatalities back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And give that old school MK innovation brought to Next Gen feel

Just some ramblings here, might be to radical for most.
Things I'd like to see in a next gen mortal kombat game:
- Focus on the fighting game, not mini games. I'll get that Mario Party game or whatever it is called if I want to play mini games.
- Remove KAK. It makes for poor games.
- Retcon MKA and move the next story line 20 or 30 years later. Lui kang is death and seeing Cage in his next movie plotline is overplayed. We need new characters and I rather play with the son of Sonya and Johnny this time then the old characters again.
- Make better story lines, and let story lines of older characters evolve. If you put Scorpion back don't let him hunt quan chi again for example, put some twists in there. I don't expect it to be novel material but MKA was just horrid.
- Scrap Kurrency and let people unlock stuff by completing challenges instead of running around collecting coins in some crap maps that make PS1 games look good. By challenges I mean things like beating arcade in a certain time limit, fighting off 2 enemies like in MK1 or more. Fighting without using blocks or using specials. and so on.
- With that said, change Konquest. I prefer a short story mode for each character then a long drawn out platform mode with one character that is bound to be no favorite. If the next MK is about a tournament again maybe you can keep the story mode in there. A centralized detailed place with events and dynamic characters to talk to between fights.
- No different stances for each characters and no weapon mode specifically. True fighters don't stick to one martial art but eventually form a personal way of fighting. Stances hampers the creativity of the fighting they could do.
- This isn't Virtua fighter or Tekken where characters imitate real life martial arts. And it isn't Soul Caliber either, so don't give everyone weapons, only the ones that have them integral to their characters ( think Kenshi, Kitana and Baraka.) Try a different path maybe? There should be a way where air fighting, specials and different fighting styles go hand in hand and can be deep without imitating other fighting games to much.
- Don't give away the keys to perform a fatality right from the start.. let people try them selfs or make the key sequence an unlockable reward. And just put in 2 premade fatalities. At least I liked that better.
- Make deathtraps only useable as a fatality, aka when you finished someone off. Now its more cheesing then fighting in the end.
In short those are some of my wishes. In short MK is in need for another revamp
( Sorry for the crappy english and grammar =p )

About Me

I'm glad to read many of the posts in this thread, fans wanting a major overhaul for the next MK fighting game.
Here's a list of what I would like for MK8 to have:
-character design: less steroid abuse looking characters, more feminine curves for the ladies, less broad shoulders and thick man-legs, prettier faces. OK we all love big boobies, but not on all female characters next time, and maybe less skimpier outfits. For the males, I like the design approach to Shang Tsung (MKDA primary), Drahmin (either costume), Kenshi (love the blindfold and overalls in the MKDA primary), Subzero (MKdeception primary-grandmaster/ dragon armor), Havik (grim reaper), Hotaru (either costume- heavy body armor is always a plus for my taste), Quan Chi (MKDA primary - simple yet badass looking), well you get the idea.
-environments: more destructive environments, more detail, have more going on. I really didn't like Blaze's background in MK armageddon, so boring and plain wtf. Deathtraps are always welcome, but should be harder to knock your opponent into them, it's just not fair when the other player gets you in it with no effort.
-Blood detail: it must be improved, the blood in the 3D MK games are just not liquidy enough. The blood just looks chunky, I don't know how else to say it. Let there be a stream of blood following the swipe of your sword when you decapitate an enemy and have the open wounds spray like a fountain (look at some ninja gaiden 2 or conan screenshots).
-Martial arts: let only some characters have hand to hand only combat, and some weapons only combat. Let the martial arts flow against the attackers moves and not just have dial a combo. MK8 needs a better counter system, I like the system in dead or alive.
-Do not take away the block button!!!!!!!! that's one of the things MK must never get rid of, and sets it appart from other fighters who just simply require you to tap the direction button away from your opponent. A big no no. That I believe takes away the fun from fighting, and having a button assigned for blocking provides a better experience.
-FATALITY: I don't think anyone liked the create a fatality system, except for a select few that includes me. I don't love it but I don't hate it either. If it revolved more around the characters features then it would have been better. I think 2 classic fatalities per character should make a return, and have them be as creative as the ones for the game shaolin monks. Kung Lao's buzz saw fatality for example, that was brand new and very painful looking.
