I've been arguing all over Eventhubs about the block button. It's unsettling, really. There's a legion of people who want this thing gone, and not a damn one of them played MK9 competitively. It just sounds like Capcom types wanting other games to conform to Capcom conventions.

I know there are TYM types who want it gone as well (for crossups... because apparently MK9 didn't have enough mix-up potential already). Where is MKO on this? Am I the only one who feels incredibly strong about this issue?

I don't really like humoring the other side with discussion about it. MK has a block button, end of story. No argument about the subject ever ends up being constructive, it's all just "Muh Street Fighter playstyle!"

Injustice didn't even have cross-ups even though it switched to back-to-block because the characters didn't change which direction they were facing in mid-air when jumping.

After Injustice I am convinced it is time to see the block button be gone IF they remove universal air attacks. The whole point of removing the block button would be to allow for cross-up setups. If MK doesn't leave the dark ages continues to use a universal jump punch and kick it would be pointless to change the blocking (I guess each character could have unique jump arcs and hitboxes but at that point just use new animations too).

I was never a fan of dash blocking so I wouldn't mind seeing that be gone as well.

Overall, I don't want to hang on to a block button just because its an "MK" thing nor do I want to switch just to appeal to the Capcom crowd. I just hope whatever decision they make is based solely on game functionality.

having no block button is one of the main reasons i hate Street Fighter, Injustice, etc.

It's Mortal Kombat, it needs the block button. To take it out would just be stupid.

Personally I hope they keep it. It's always been a part of the franchise.

Eh, I would rather see it gone, but it's more than likely going to stay.

The block button is one of the few constant things in the MK series, it needs to stay. As someone stated before, MK has a block button, it is a fact, not an argument.

WIth that said, I do think it needs some work. I would let you "cancel" the block into any attack(not for movement, only attacks) without the need to release the button, as it would be better for punishing.

I want the block button back. Basically, I just want this game to play like a better polished version of MK2011.

I've been hearing this argument since the 90's for no other reason than people want their games to feel more like Street Fighter.

It's a part of MK. Fuck 'em if they can't adjust.

The block SHOULD be changed to holding back instead of assigning a button, period. There is no reason why this shouldn't happen and don't give me the "its tradition in MK" bullshit. This is practically universally accepted in the fgc BECAUSE there are no reasons not to have it work that way

I can think of a pretty big reason:

I like being able to walk backwards uninterrupted when the other guy is pressing buttons.
Also, the importance of crossups is seriously overrated, and I suspect adding them to MK would make characters with a teleport attack like Scorpion broken.

Razor is right on the mark. Why do we need additional cross ups in a game that's already extremely mix-up heavy? By gaining cross ups, we'd lose dash pressure, the very thing that makes MK's offense unique to begin with.

And that's just one of many problems. For those who are for the back-to-block function, how exactly are people suppose to play footsies with Nightwolf, a character with a 10-frame long-range shoulder charge that's SAFE on block? The minute you're doing anything other than holding down+back, you've handed the momentum to Nightwolf.

And that's just one example. Ermac's push? Sub's slide? REPTILE'S SIX-FRAME DASH! These are not things you can react to. You'll finally have your cross ups, but good luck getting up close to any of these characters.

And seriously, what is wrong with the cross ups we have now? If you successfully land a cross up, you get:

1) free meter

2) free pressure and mix-ups

3) chip damage

People say they want cross ups, but what they really want is vortex potential, a thing that SF4 fans have been bitching about for years now.

This^

Being forced to jump away to retreat leaves you open.
It's part of MK's core gameplay mechanics. Even when they change the playstyle, we still have a block button.

-MK has a Block button, blood/gore, fatalities, and a 4 button attack scheme

-SF has holding away to block, hindering retreat/footing, super combos, varied fighting styles on a 6 button attack scheme

-Tekken has holding away to block, IIRC, non-humanoid animals/creatures making unorthodox hitboxes, complex commands on a 4 button attack scheme

-KI has holding away to block, and mostly SF style gameplay on a 6 button attack scheme, but with some blood/gore, and fatalities.

-SC has a Guard button and a 3 button attack scheme, with complex commands, like Tekken

MK's dedicated block button is part of what differentiates it from all the other fighters out there. Just because they tried a super meter is no reason to completely adopt SF style. Sure lets add 2 more attack buttons, why the hell not?!
I'm not familiar with every fighter out there, so I don't know if anyone else has a dedicated block button.

Maybe add an option to switch blocking styles.
"Hardcore" for SF style hold away to block, because hampering retreat makes for a more aggressive playstyle.

Ask Injustice players about that post Scorpion dlc. Soooooo much salt.

Razor/temp pretty much outlined all the reasons it should be kept. Its part of what makes MK unique. Felt naked trying to play injustice without it. Dash pressure/cancels keeps people on their toes.

I could deal with either option but I would MUCH rather a block button.

NRS can't really make an option for back-to-block vs a button or else competitions would be a little tiled in the favor of the block button players. A choice needs to be made.

Pre-patch Scorpion is actually why I quit Injustice, lol. I was doing tournaments regularly in the local scene before Scorp's release. The issue has since been fixed, and I even tried getting back into the game, but there's no San Antonio scene left to practice with.

I'm telling you dude. If people weren't already pissed about him before, they damn sure were after all the teleport assaults. I quit online for a while after his release myself haha.
