Story mode in MKX?

I'm wondering if the story mode in this game is going to be like how the last one was, just random fight after fight with little cut-scenes in the middle. I think I've heard Boon say there will not be Konquest mode, much to my dismay.

I really hope that the story mode isn't like MK2011's though. It was kind of dumb how the characters would get into a gruesome fight with each other for stupid reasons. Like when you were Johnny Cage and had to fight Sonya because she was annoyed that he offered to escort her to safety. I did some pretty brutal shit to her in that fight and the next scene they act like nothing even happened! Or when Smoke attacks Jade in front of everybody because he thinks that Mileena was Kitana even though she so obviously wasn't, and Raiden just watches the long bloody fight until it's over.

I honestly don't even know why so many have said it was the best story in any fighting game. Have they forgotten about MKD?

Not sure if this topic has been discussed before so apologies if it has.confused

I hope its like MK9, but not with the 4-fights-every-character-chapter thingie...
I hope you just follow the story and fight the reasonable fights that happen, so first you play with Kitana, next fight Lui Kang, then Jax, then Kitana again and then with a badguy, because why only play with the boring good guys? Bad guys have much more potentional.

I have a feeling that we're mostly going to get more of the same kind of format with MKX's story mode. It wouldn't be as bad if the story was actually better mapped out in terms of character interactions. After MK9, I'm still skeptical of how the story will turn out. I just don't want any more Idiot Plots.

I think its going to be much more cinematic this time around, I think next-gen is going to afford them some opportunities they used to not have, and that's why they're being so ambitious about the time frames and not saying much about it.

Copy pasting what I said in a different thread as I think it fits better here:
MK9 problem was that it focused on a series of fights for character A, then character B, etc...

This had 2 problems:

- If a character was used early on the story, then his development stops and he's just an spectator. Liu Kang had to invade another's character chapter to get his fight against Shao Kahn.

- Some characters are essentially never developed and act as punching bags (specially Baraka, Reptile and Sheeva).


With this story spanning over 25 years, that system could be very damaging. Some characters will have to be featured much later for obvious reasons (like being a baby on the 5 years later part for example), but I'd like the story to feature short fragments of each character story divided on that amount of time.

For example, say that the theory of Sub-Zero being Kuai Liang is true, then we could have:

- A fragment of the story showing the event that allowed him to scape. For example Quan Chi convinces him to kill Scorpion in exchange of his body to corrupt him, Sareena warns him about this and Sub-Zero defeats Scorpion but tells him the truth about Quan Chi instead of killing him, which would develop in a later chapter for Scorpion chasing Quan Chi and in the middle of this Sareena could have her own fight agains Quan Chi or Reiko when she decides she wants to help Sub-Zero.

- Later we're shown how Sub-Zero, maybe now aided by a freed Sareena, tries to defeat Sektor and becomes the grandmaster of the clan, giving him for later fights his grandmaster style.

- After more events and more story development, we find Sub-Zero exploring his outworld origins, maybe fighting someone along the way, maybe finding his own brother or something, and he finds the cryomancer ruins, unlocking the cryomancer fighting style and probably an alternate costume for the next time he's seen on the story.

This way the character gets as much usage as before, but each story fragment develop other characters too and the character gets developed over time instead of being featured in a single moment on time.

Ferra/Torr for example could get a similar treatment, say that we have a part where Torr still didn't meet Ferra and he uses his lackey style, or maybe there is a moment on time that they're separated from each other to feature that, then we have another moment featuring how Ferra's people was oppresed or something like that.

Dividing each character's interventions over the span of time would be much better for everyone's development. You could even have some fights where you could choose which character will fight against an enemy.

They really have to do a better job of mapping out the story, i know this isn't mass effect the story isn't supposed to be front and center. I just always felt what made MK stand out was it's story. I hope NRS shows it a lot of love and builds upon it ( even if mk9's story ended being pretty awful)

The worst mistake EVER in the MK9 storyline.

The bad guys are just CANNON FREAKING FOLDER!

HOW DARE THEY! Bad Guys have more/same amount of fans as the boring good guys (AKA pieces of human meat that should be crushed)

At least Jade and Smoke had a chapter, but those felt really forced. Also FUCKING STRYKER beating ERMAC is the worst scene for me personally...

The biggest change story mode needs, at least in one fan's opinion, is to allow the player to choose a character and see the entire story from their perspective. That random switching stuff is for the birds.

Yes, I'd prefer this as well. That way, everyone gets to be playable in Story Mode.

Armageddon's story mode with Taven was awesome! I wish we'd get something like that, but Ed Boon already said No Konquest Mode :(

I'm hoping for much MUCH more story. Better and longer cut scenes. I wanna c the origin of the elder gods, flashbacks of Shinnok's rebellion, the origin of Shao Kahn, and the origin of the tournament. Unlockable VIDEO origins of all characters, not just a text bio. NPC bosses within the story mode (like "Monster" was in MK6, Zomibe Goro from MK9 challenge tower, and Tremor on PSvita)

The reason they go with "Story Mode" instead of a "Konquest" is because its easier to tell a linear story, especially when dealing with 30 Characters..

I'd like it to be like MK9 only without character chapters, just have a normal narative and swap about the fighters often.

I feel there going to have to make the story mode a few hours longer if its going to time lapse over the course of 25 years.

I don't think we need a fight with EVERY character. For example, if Tanya's only role in the story is to open the portal to Edenia for Shinnok, then be his bride... We only need her in cut scenes. This will eliminate the "idiot fights" like Jax beating up Cage just for flirting with Sonya

Since Konquest mode (or MKSM styled story portion of the game) is out....this is the type of progression from that I would expect:

I can't stand not having more control of what the story element is doing per whatever character I choose to play with. Even if the over arcing storyline comes to the same conclusion, HOW I get there should at least depend on WHO I chose playing with.

I actually liked the story mode from MK9 though I'd like to see little variations like mini games (like Injustice) and cut off characters chapters.

The point of having only the good guys playable is story progression: the good guys won? The world is sale. The baddies won? The universe or Earthrealm are gone.

Dissidia Final Fantasy had the same story mode and only good characters were playable for the same reason.

That doesn't make sense. If they'd put a few bad guy chapters in the middle, mixed in between the good guy ones, it's not gonna change Raiden having the last chapter and being the one who wins at the end of the game.
I think it'll be a complete overhaul from MK9's. Completely different everything. Cutscenes of course, and they'll look so gorgeous.

What 's the point of having baddies win a fight and don't kill the heroes? You need heroes for real story progression that's why in the movies always had the heroes winning. Unless a certain hero was created just to be killed, like Art Lean.

Every game that features a story mode like mk9 has heroes winning over and over. Again Dissidia FF is a Good example.

What I would like is for you to be able to choose from a select group of characters for a specific fight.

For example:
First fight you can choose Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Sonya
Second fight you can choose Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Johnny
Third you can choose Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sonya, and Johnny
Fourth you can choose Liu Kang, Kitana
Fifth you can choose Kitana, Jade, Sindel

And so on and so forth. That way the story proceeds organically and you can play who you want to. I would also like a second story mode from the villains perspective. So you basically do the same thing except choosing from all the bad guys. It could be a hypothetical route or if they can find a way to make it work as canon then that's great too. Like having the fights you play as in the villain mode be the fights the heroes lose in their story mode.
