I think the same. Hence why -

Sonya and Cassie are at ends with each other already in the comics. Through Johnny's death, they'll end up coming together.

Well you gotta think going forward Cassie will replace them. But for this game, since events happen right after MK9 Johnny and Sonya both HAVE to be there.
