I don't get why you'd automatically assume that more characters would mean a less quality game, especially when you've admitted some variations are useless. MK has some really great character concepts that a lot of people want to see revitalized on the latest gen consoles. And judging by the amount of detail in this game, I highly doubt memory space is an issue anymore. It's more about the amount of development time.

I'm just looking at the last two MK games that attempted to put every character thus far in there, or had a very big roster: MK Trilogy and Armageddon. As a general MK fan, of course I was initially excited and all over it, seeing old favorites and whatnot. But after playing it for awhile, you see that's all they really had to offer; no real depth or balance to the game, nothing really innovating. All I'm saying is that I don't want the next one to be as lackluster as those two were, if that particular trend was to continue.

Yes, I did admit some variations were useless, but just as others before me suggested, they can still keep the system but work on making it more focused and balanced. I do not believe they should just throw it away all together in favor of having more characters, because I feel as though it could really add more depth to the game later down the line; just like Capcom did with Street Fighter IV's 'Focus Attacks'.

To me, there's a middle ground. I want two great variations per character and a roster of 30. Since we're going from 72 variations down to 60, how about doing fans a solid and add about ten more backgrounds? I don't even need (or want) stage interactables.

I see, well Armageddon was a mess, no one is going to argue with you there. I don't think most people are looking for a maxed out roster though, just more of an inclusion of characters who were relevant to the story and possibly the comics. Plus the characters whose moves sets got taken for variations.
