There was a thread over at neogaf about bad attempts at attractive character Designs in games...Mortal Kombat and Injustice were brought up alot...

It isn't just an opinion shared here, I think that generally gamers find Netherealm's games have wonky character modelling, even beyond their attractiveness...That Liu Kang comparaison Razor posted says it all...

I think it has been getting better If I look back at earlier 3D games, but I know they can step it up much more for next gen, I want MK10 to look incredible!

The early 3d games were just horrendous, I will say that. I never cared for their popcorn body parts scattering everywhere for the fatalities. (I'd rather see the infamous five rib cages, ten hands and legs flying everywhere than the popcorn)

I'm going out on a limb in saying that I really do believe with the PS4, and the um... other system, they'll step their game up.

But, with that comparison picture, I'll admit that Liu's head is quite small after seeing the clean up.

As much as I liked the new MK I was really hoping it wouldn't be as bright and colorful. I was really wanting the Vincent Proce(I think that's who it was and my apologies if I'm not spelling it right) style of characters. That IMO would have made it darker and more realistic. But I'm absolutely positive that as far as realistic graphics are concerned we will definitely see them with the next gen lineup. No reason not to.

That shit ain't realistic, bro. I Don't know too many Special Forces chicks running around look' like that... no matter what fucked up situation they find themselves in. K? If it were an alternate costume, sure why not.

But the other of his designs were pretty impressive... although you have to realize that concept art will 99.9% of the time look better than the actual in-game modeling.

MK2011's concept art was magnificent but then when you compare that to what actually was in the game you could almost throw up in your mouth a little bit.

Painting concept art of a realistic looking person doesn't mean they'll look like that in the game's 3D graphics. The modellers are the problem.
As far as Proce, he had some cool ideas, but he likes tattoos and ancient-looking armor way too much. What does a modern day American soldier like Sonya need with a spiked glove and ninja sword?

Heh, that would never go down seeing how Sonya had so much backlash for not having an undershirt.

Although as you mentioned, the other concepts he had were quite spectacular.

Mk2011 can get away with basic undetailed looks but the next mk is gonna be on next gen, and next gen has realistic faces incorporated

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfgwtYDXB8E

And I agree with making females faces more feminine. All they need to do is get a fashion magazine or see Victoria's secret models and use that as a template...

Model mileena like the chick on my avatar, but with mask on...

Also free-flowing hair, I remember asking for this in mk 2011 buildup... Tomb raider has free flowing hair, and nrs has no excuse for not being able to do it. My answer is fire people, and employ platinum blondes because they're more creative
Firebaby Call of duty ghosts has female soldiers and u can customise their appearance, but u can't make them slutty. Nrs needs to follow that and make the female combatants high value, and not dress like sluts. Why is it that Milena dressed classy when they were about to off kitanas head in the ceremony or gathering whatever but then when Milena is about to fight someone she wears less clothing... Its not like she's gonna hit it off with other character, they're not gonna fuck so make them dress decently. Girls dress in skimpy clothing to nightclubs because they wanna grind or get touched sexually, that's OK because its a sexual situation.mk is a life or death kind of situation.

Nrs are gonna be employing platinum blondes, that's why they started firing people, starting with hector. At least with platinum blondes we will see more creativity.

Fascinating. I never knew there was a study out confirming the link between creativity and platinum blondes. wow

Lol... I see your point with Sonya. I completely forgot about her concept art being as bad as it was. I was pointing more toward the other characters. Especially Scorpion who has gone waaaay too over the top as of late. I like his more simplistic style with Scorpion, Kano, Subby, and Raiden. Those were a lot more realistic when you look at what we have gotten lately.

Maybe NRS should get some advice on "dark and gritty" from VISCERAL's Dead Space trilogy grin

Ugh, you would think after all these years that we've all interacted with one another, we'd be a little bit nicer and calmer with how we disagree. Oh well. lol

In the midst of the back and forth, I will say, I agree with the mentality that the models could be much better. I've stressed for the past couple of games, that I would really like to see more variety in the character models. Not everyone needs to be bulky and muscular, just as not every female needs to thrive on sex appeal.

Liu Kang should not look like Sub-Zero in terms of stature, height, weight, tone etc. No more than 2 characters should share the same type of body structure. It's OK to have skinny, average, fit, muscular, or chubby characters. There's no reason they need to all look like your typical body builders. It's OK if they are all fit, or even muscular, but there's different attributes that play into that, that should still make them all look different.

As for the females, the fact that all the females in MK '11 wore high heeled boots, is absolutely unacceptable. The fact that they all are designed with big boobs, toned down skinny bodies, with minimal clothing, and of the same height...is also unacceptable.

If you CARE about the INTEGRITY of the DESIGN of these characters. Which we all should, and do, if we have been here for a decade or more at this point spewing our opinions over a fictional world... So no, nobody should want the characters to look so similar, because they aren't. Take 28 people, male and female, and have them all get in the best shape of their lives. You really think they're all gonna look the same? You think if given the option of what to wear, all the females would choose the same slutty attires? You think each guy would look as if he was chiseled from stone? No, no, no.

These characters should look unique.

It's ok to cut corners here and there, but when they all look so obviously the same, that is not ok. Scorpion should not look like Sub-Zero in terms of muscle mass, stature, weight, height etc. It's also ok for a character to be fit and muscular but not be a body builder type. Certainly Arnold Schwarzenegger does not look the same as Jason Statham. Just as Jackie Chan does not look like Jet Li. Jean Claude Van Damme does not look like Dolph Lundgren...so on and so forth.

This is not a matter of how hard it is to create character models. As seen with the Liu Kang example, and just by looking at other games in general, it's a matter of their models just not being up to par of what they should be. Beyond the fact that they are copy and pasted with no variety as mentioned above, they are inaccurate and ugly.

Our jobs are not to coddle the modelers or make excuses for them. The fact is, they could do better. That's a fact.

No reason to jump down each others throats here. We all know they could, and should, do better. That's all there is to it.

The thing about lighting is the reason I prefer playing Injustice. Characters look better, plus various sized skeletons instead copy/paste jobs.

How did we not notice this and complain during MK's production?

Forgot about me, lol

i feel MK lost it's original feel that was best seen in MK2. Color looks good on MK. MK2 had color but was dark and gritty to. Injustice looks kinda boring, I feel that Grey dominates the game. But NRS defenetly did a great job with MK9. It's part of the community to step up if we see improvements.

Nice thread.
