I find it to be more of his powers were taken, not his soul. If his soul was taken, his corpse would have been on the ground. Considering he vanished into thin air, it relates to more-less his powers.
I don't think we saw the end of Shang Tsung.

I'm still not sure about Shang Tsung. Having Quan Chi back could be a gateway to the return of Shang Tsung.

I highly doubt Shang Tsung is coming back in this game. He needs to take a sit out with Shao Kahn

Calling it now, this will be his least-used variation.
I personally like it better than the other two, but this looks like it'll be a challenge to use. From a practical standpoint, it looks like it essentially reduces him to staying in place (or one step in either direction, depending on the area-of-effect of the circles) slinging special moves. The spell circles look like they have a long startup that any rushdown character will interrupt with ease, so using them naked seems out of the question.
I hope he has some normals or kombos that give him some distance.
The style makes sense for a sorcerer or mage type, but I'm kinda wondering about its effective application. That said, I can't wait to start using it!

With Quan Chi in, I hope Shang Tsung isn't coming back. Quan Chi >>> Shang Tsung by canon. He basically has all of Shang Tsung abilities and more.
Plus, I'm even more interested in the whole Kung Lao and Kitana thing -- now that those two are returning.
That dialogue between Quan Chi and Kitana slaysssss me
