examples:dial up combos vs custom combos, double tap forward to run vs run button.........

While it may seem Mortal Kombat is copying other games, MK came out before all your recent and old fighting game contenders (even Tekken). On top of that there is only so many ways you can configure control schemes with a hand-held control (Xbox360/PS3) so it is inevitable that control schemes do become similar for the fighting genre. That shoudn't matter though, MK should stick to what made it famous, the characters, the gore, the fatalities. What they should constantly improve upon (which they are) is the visual quality, making the characters move more realistically and expanding upon what you can do in konquest. Have you ever played anything in the Elder Scrolls series (e.g. Oblivion), a game like that with MK realms, characters and weapons might be a good idea. Or even an RTS like command and conquer, only Mortal Kombat style. Maybe my last 2 ideas might move it away from what made it famous and could be risky, still, like you said Originality vs Advancement.

i think to try and find a happy medium of originality and advancement would be best. MK vs DC was in an OK direction i guess. the analog situation for sidestep needs to be fixed though...it felt odd to me. i think if there will be sidestep you should use a right trigger + the direction to sidestep to.
I dunno, when it comes to controls i really liked MK:A's control scheme but that is me. so if i had to choose between the two and could only pick one choice it would be originality.

This game is already original. It is a collection of common sense ideals that is easily acceptable.
Now, to expand on those ideals, instead of constantly trying to throw "new kewl" stuff in there.... That's something else entirely. I'm not saying that they should stop trying new things but, this game seethes great ideas that have existed since the first game. Some obvious ones get brushed by the way-side. ALOT of them remain untapped. And each game breeds more potentially excellent playing experiences that remain incomplete or befuddled.
Go with originality as a main force every-time.
Technological advances spruce that originality up and make those ideas more accessible, more playable, more subversive, look better, run faster...ect.
MK itself is an idea that has withstood the test of time and technological advancement. So... great ideas never die, they transform with technology. Remains the same idea though.

I don't really feel strongly either way. Just make the game fun and competitive with good artistic elements. We don't need to reinvent the fighting genre.
